CHAPTER 3: THE JOURNEY TO A NEW BEGINNING
The morning after the fake apology was heavy. Lily woke up with swollen eyes. Her blue dress was torn and stained on the floor. Her knees still had small bruises from being dragged at the party. Amanda was packing their bags quietly. "Mom..." Lily whispered, her voice hoarse from crying. "Are you ready?" Amanda asked softly. Lily nodded, tears coming. "I'm sorry for shouting yesterday." Amanda hugged her. "I forgive you, my baby. I just want you safe. We need a break from this city." Just then, loud banging on their front door. "LILY! AMANDA! OPEN THE DOOR!" Amanda opened it. It was Jennifer, beside her mother Vanessa. Vanessa wore a tight red designer dress, holding her phone, face twisted in anger. "Is this how you train your daughter?" Vanessa shouted. "Look what your dirty daughter did to my expensive white rug! She poured drink, poured food, ruined my rug that costs $1,500! You must pay!" Jennifer stood behind her, arms crossed, smirking at Lily. Amanda was confused. "What rug are you talking about?" "My daughter threw a small party," Vanessa continued. "Your daughter came, misbehaved, spoiled everything! And now you want to run away to the countryside? You must pay for my rug!" Lily stepped back, shaking. "She... she pushed me... they held me down..." "LIES!" Jennifer shouted. "You always lie!" Amanda's eyes narrowed. She looked at Jennifer's smirk, then at Vanessa. "Vanessa," Amanda said calmly. "You say my daughter spoiled your rug? Okay. But before we talk about rug, let me show you something." She brought out her phone. "Have you seen what your daughter has been doing to my daughter since we were six? Have you seen this?" She played the first video. Lily on the university bathroom floor, covered in dirty toilet water, Jennifer laughing and recording for t****k. "This has 50,000 views in one night because your daughter is an influencer," Amanda said, voice shaking. Then she played the second video. Yesterday's party. Lily on her knees, being dragged, cleaning the spill with her torn dress, while Jennifer laughed and went live. Vanessa's face changed. Mouth open. She watched her own daughter kicking drink towards Lily on video. "Jennifer..." Vanessa whispered, shocked. "You... you did this? You told me it was just a small drink spill!" Jennifer's smirk disappeared. "Mom, it's not... it's just content... it's a joke..." "A joke?" Amanda shouted, tears in her eyes. "You call bullying a child for 14 years a joke? My daughter came home barefoot yesterday! Bleeding! Because of your daughter! And you come to my house to ask for rug money?" Vanessa was shaking. Shame filled her face. She looked at Lily's bruised knees. "Oh my God," Vanessa whispered. "Jennifer, what kind of child have I raised?" "Mom, don't listen to them—" "SHUT UP!" Vanessa shouted at Jennifer, tears in her eyes. "I am ashamed! I thought I raised a princess! But I raised a bully! You are grounded for one month! No t****k! No parties!" Vanessa turned to Amanda, broken. "Amanda... I am sorry. I didn't know she was like this. Forgive me." Amanda just held Lily close. Vanessa dragged Jennifer away, Jennifer glaring at Lily one last time. When they left, Amanda closed the door and locked it. "Ready to leave this city, my baby?" Amanda asked. Lily nodded fiercely. "Yes, Mom. Let's go far away." At 7am, their taxi arrived. They were leaving Seattle. The road to Great-Grandma's place was far. Three hours to Willow Creek, a small countryside town in Vermont. At first it was silent. Lily watched Seattle fade away. The tall buildings, the university, Jennifer's face — fading. Then Amanda reached for her hand. "You remember when you were small? You loved this road. You would count all the trees." Lily smiled small. "I thought the trees were running." They both laughed. Amanda stopped the taxi at a roadside shop and bought cotton candy and roasted peanuts. "Your favorite when you were small," Amanda said. They ate together, laughing like when Lily was 7. "Mom, what is great-grandma's house like?" Lily asked. Amanda's eyes brightened. "Your great-grandma's house is very big. Old but big. She makes the best chicken pot pie in the world. And your cousins are there waiting..." "Which cousins?" "Sophie and Sofia! My sister Claire's daughters. 22. Twins. You two used to play together before we moved to Seattle. Very beautiful, very loud, very stubborn like you. And their cousin Collins is there too. And James, and his little sister Ember." "I'm not stubborn!" Lily laughed. "You are!" Amanda tickled her. Lily screamed laughing. Lily felt a small hope for the first time in days. After three hours, they entered Willow Creek. Fresh air. Green fields. No traffic. Just old farms, horses, pine trees. And then she saw it. Great-Grandma's house. Big farmhouse. Painted light green, old but strong, with a big oak tree in front and a wide porch. Before the taxi stopped, the door burst open. "LILYYYYYY!" two loud voices screamed together. Two identical girls with long curly hair, in matching yellow summer dresses, ran out. Sophie and Sofia! Lily jumped down. The twins grabbed her and spun her. "You are here! Finally! Aunty Amanda!" They hugged Amanda, almost knocking her over. Behind them, a tall boy with brown hair came out with a little girl. "Collins!" Amanda shouted. "Lily! Welcome!" Collins hugged her. He was 23, her cousin, very handsome. Next to him was James, 24, tall, with serious eyes, and his little sister Ember, 16, hiding behind him. James smiled at Lily. "Hi, I'm James. This is my sister Ember. We live next door to great-grandma. Welcome." Ember waved shyly. "Hi Lily." Then, behind James, another boy came out. Taller. Quiet. Dark hair, light eyes, wearing a simple black shirt. Noah. James's best friend. The moment Lily's eyes met Noah's, everything stopped. It was love at first sight. Noah stared at her. His eyes softened. Lily's heart beat so fast she couldn't breathe. Her knees were still bruised and her eyes were still swollen, and she suddenly felt shy. Noah didn't say a word. He just looked at her, deep, like he already knew her pain. Lily quickly looked away, blushing, her cheeks red. No communication. Just eyes. Sophie noticed and whispered to Sofia, giggling, "Oh my God, look at them." Great-Grandma came out slowly, in a floral dress, smiling. She is 97 years old. "My babies," Great-Grandma said, opening her arms. Lily ran and knelt to hug her. "Great-Grandma!" Great-Grandma held her head. "You are welcome, my baby. You are home now." Inside was full. Great-Grandma had cooked because her babies were coming. "Family feast today!" Great-Grandma announced. They ate together on the big wooden table, chicken pot pie, mashed potatoes, fresh apple pie, steak. Everyone laughed. Great-Grandma told stories of when Amanda was small and stubborn like Lily. "Mom was worse than me!" Lily shouted, and everyone laughed. After lunch, Sophie shouted, "Let's go out! The fields are beautiful before the rain!" "Rain?" Great-Grandma asked, looking at the sky. "It might rain soon." "That's the fun!" Sofia said. So they all ran out — Lily, Sophie, Sofia, Collins, James, Ember, and Noah behind them. Willow Creek fields were endless. Green grass, wildflowers. They played like kids. Sophie and Sofia pulled Lily, running. Then the sky rumbled. Small drops started. "Rain!" Ember shouted happily. Instead of running inside, they stayed. The rain got heavier. They laughed, shouting, dancing under the rain. Lily lifted her face to the sky. Rain washed her face. For the first time since the toilet video, she laughed — truly laughed. Sophie and Sofia dragged her and spun her in the rain. Noah stood a little far, watching Lily. Rain on his hair, on his shirt. He was smiling small, only at her. Lily looked at him again through the rain. Their eyes met again. Still no words. But something passed between them. Collins shouted, "Okay! Now it's getting serious! Let's go inside!" They all ran inside, soaked, laughing, dripping water everywhere. "Jesus! You children are crazy!" Great-Grandma shouted, but she was laughing too, bringing towels. They all changed out of their wet clothes into dry, warm clothes. Great-Grandma gave them towels and old sweaters. The rain was still falling heavily outside. The wind was strong. Lily came downstairs, her hair still damp, wearing dry clothes but still shivering a little from the cold. Suddenly, someone came close to her. It was Noah. He didn't say anything. He just held out a heavy, warm sweater — his own sweater. Big, thick, and warm. Lily looked up at him, surprised. Noah just looked at her, eyes soft, and placed the sweater gently in her hands. Lily's cheeks turned red. "Thank you," she whispered, blushing. Noah nodded once, no words, and walked away. Lily wore his heavy warm sweater. It was too big for her, covering her hands. She was no longer cold. Great-Grandma lit the small fire stove in the living room. The house had light, warm and cozy. They all sat in a circle around the fire — Lily, Sophie, Sofia, Collins, James, Ember, Noah, Amanda, Claire, and Great-Grandma. Great-Grandma was talking to them about life. "When I was your age," Great-Grandma said, her voice calm, "we didn't have phones. We had stories. And when life gets hard, you don't run. You sit. You breathe. You remember who you are." Everyone was quiet, listening. The fire crackled. Outside, the rain poured. Lily was holding Noah's sweater close, listening to Great-Grandma. For a moment, she felt safe. Then — _PA!_ The power went out. The lights went off. The whole house went dark, only the fire stove glowing. "Oh, power has gone," Great-Grandma said. A second later — CRACK! BOOM! A huge branch from the old oak tree in front broke and fell — straight on great-grandma's big roof! The whole house shook. "Jesus!" Amanda shouted, holding Lily. Water started pouring inside from the broken roof. Wind blew in. They all stood up, shocked, looking stranded. Rain pouring inside, roof half gone, no power, house wet. "Great-Grandma, what will we do now? Where will we sleep?" Collins asked. The rain continued until evening. The house was cold and leaking. Only in the evening, after the rain stopped, the carpenter came. He climbed up and checked the roof and shook his head. "This roof will need one week to fix. You cannot sleep here tonight. It's too open and dangerous," he said. They looked stranded. No roof, no power, night coming. Amanda looked at Great-Grandma. "Mama, what do we do?" Then Claire — Amanda's sister, Sophie and Sofia's mother — stood up. "Wait," Claire said. "We can go to my husband's mother's place. It's three hours drive from here, near Blackwood Forest." Sofia's eyes lit up. She clapped her hands. "Oh my God! Yes! Mommy is right! I remember that place! That place is luxury! It's like an empire! I went there when I was small! We should go!" Everyone looked at Sofia, surprised. "Luxury? Empire?" Sophie asked. Sofia nodded excitedly. "Yes! You will see! My dad's mom's house is huge!" Amanda nodded. "Okay. We will pack and get a taxi to move tonight. Three hours drive to Claire's husband's mother's place." Everyone started packing quickly, talking about Claire's mother-in-law's house, wondering what it really looks like, why Sofia is so excited. Lily wore Noah's heavy warm sweater, holding her bag, sitting by the window, her heart beating fast — not from fear, but because Noah was sitting across from her, looking at her again through the dim fire light. No words. Just eyes.
