Moon's plight
Moon’s POV
I rubbed my sweaty palms against my dress as I rumbled through Lady Helen's armoire in search of the specific garter she insisted on wearing.
“Milady, I don't think you kept it here,’ I voiced out to her, and the stern glare I got from her sent shivers down my spine.
“My husband is almost ready. The royal ball will commence in a few hours, and I don't want to create a bad impression by showing up late. I'm giving you a few minutes to find that garter. If you still want to eat for the rest of your stay in this house!” She yelled, and I trembled on the spot.
I knew she meant every word she uttered, and I wasn't ready to go days without food. I continued the search for her favourite garter, and the moon goddess finally smiled on me, I found it.
“Here you go, Milady.” I handed it over to her and made an attempt to scurry out of the room, but my pupils dilated the moment she called me back.
I took a few steps closer to her with my head bowed, hoping I was safe.
“Hurry to your quarters, have a nice bath, and put this on,” She ordered, shoving a purple dress she placed by her bedside into my arms.
“What are you still waiting for?” She asked with her stern gaze I feared so much, and I quickly headed out of the room.
In the hallways, I spread out the dress, and it wasn't so fancy. It was slightly better than the current one I was putting on.
“Why did she give me a dress to put on?” The question rang in my head as I entered the servants’ quarters with the dress.
Lily, who was also an omega servant like me, glanced at the dress with a surprised look and quickly snatched it from me in admiration.
“Don't tell me you stole Lady Helen's dress. She’ll definitely have your head for this.” She said with a worried expression, and I gave her an eye roll.
I grabbed the dress from her. “I didn't steal it. She gave it to me. Besides, it doesn't look as luxurious as what Lady Helen would wear.”
She snorted, but I ignored her and walked away. I knew she was probably jealous of me getting a dress from Lady Helen. I entered the room and quickly took off my clothes, I had a bath and stepped out to put on the dress as she had instructed.
After putting on the dress, I combed my hair and wrapped it in a bun. I walked towards the mirror, and I looked better than I had looked all these while. For the first time in a long while, I looked presentable.
My feet pressed against the cold floor, and I realized I was barefoot. I only had two pairs of footwear. One was the pair of sandals I took off before having my bath, and the other was the pair of boots we usually put on while escorting Lady Helen for her horse riding. I hesitated for a while but had to put on the scrapped sandals. It was my only option.
I walked out of the room and collided with Lily, who was standing by the door. She scanned my looks, and all I could see in her eyes was jealousy.
“Why would she buy you a dress?” She asked with the corner of her lips curled up.
“She's in her room. You can confirm from her because I’m as confused as you are.” I said and walked away, leaving her in her pool of jealousy. If only she knew the dress meant nothing to me.
I hurried towards the master's quarters where Lady Helen was waiting for me. By the time I got back to her room, she was fully dressed. She used the best of her jewellery and adorned her hair with the most expensive set of accessories she had.
‘Is this really necessary?’ I could only ask myself inwardly.
“You good for nothing! Can you go get my daughter?” She yelled at me, and that was when I realized I had been gawking at her.
“I know you haven't been privileged to attend such an event before. You should be thankful to your stars that I'd be needing your services at the event because that's the only opportunity you have to appear amongst the elites as a slave.” She muttered with a scornful look, and I pressed my lips in a thin line before leaving to call her daughter, Sophie.
Lady Helen always found a chance to remind me of the fact that I was a slave and I stopped taking it to heart a long time ago for the sake of my peace.
I knocked on Sophie, the spoiled heiress’s door, and she opened it.
“What do you want?” She asked after giving me a disdainful look from head to toe.
“Lady Helen sent for you. She's set for the event.” I informed her and took my leave. She was also prepared for the event. She was putting on a red dress that screamed luxury. If only they spent the whopping amount they used in buying beauty accessories on the poor, the pack would have been a better place.
The family of three assembled before the carriage, and I could feel Sophie's excitement.
“Mother, I can't believe I'm finally going to see the King. I heard he's young and handsome.” She squealed like a teenager.
“Yes, darling. He's very young, handsome, and powerful. Make sure you make a good impression,” Lady Helen replied, all smiles.
“My daughter is a pretty damsel, and she'll definitely capture his Majesty's attention.” Gamma Lancelot said confidently as they entered the carriage.
I glared daggers at him without his knowledge. I hated him with every fibre of my being. The memory of him paying the hungry members of my pack just to make me his slave still lingered, and the thought of the incident made my stomach clench.
“Are you thinking of entering the same carriage with us? You better join the guards in the other carriage you miscreant. And remember, your aim of following us to this event is to be at our beck and call. Understood?” Sophie asked, and I nodded before taking sluggish steps towards the carriage the two guards were meant to use.
The carriage got in motion, and I gazed out through the windows of the carriage. The guards tried to start a conversation with me, but I shut them out with a long face.
‘Why do I have to serve them at home and still be presented as a slave at an event so lavish? The King's ball.’ A single tear rolled down my cheek, and I quickly sniffled back the sobs that threatened to escape my lips.
