Chapter 5 Yesterday Once More

790 Words
When Janet got home, she received a message from Matt:   -       Have a good dream. You’re the boss in Summerville now She rolled her eyes.   -       For God’s sake, I’m a teacher. And you are too. Too many happenings in these days. And you could keep away with them first.   -       I will not miss this chance to teach them a lesson. I’m a teacher you know. The bad boys crossed the line first. And Harvey, he looks harmless and ordinary right?   He called them the bad boys, which made her think of their past again. She typed her thoughts out of some impulse:   -       What about you? You said you were not as bad as I thought. Did you bully others when we were in high school?   Half an hour later, she got his reply:   -       Yes I did, which I’ve been sorry for. If I did hurt and friends of yours, I apologize. But I have no memory that what I did hurt you directly. Anyway, you’re Jack’s daughter so I want to make friends with you.   The past stroke her in flashback again. Every time she thought of her past dream, tears filled in her eyes. But this time, why was she so calm?   -       Did you bully Levi or not?   She didn’t ask directly.   -       We had something. That was true. But I can tell you no more.   How could texting be so exhausting? She turned off her phone and didn’t reply.     It was a peaceful day and Janet just finished her lesson. When she walked out of the classroom, someone rushed to her from the back. Her muscle reacted quicker than her brain. So before Harvey Hikins could kick his teacher on her ankle, Janet gave him a leg-sweeping. Harvey fell down and it took him one minute to realize that he had no chance to knock Janet down.   A leg-sweeping from a quasi-professional karate fighter. That hurt, really.   What on earth did I do?! “Harvey are you alright? I’m sorry I didn’t mean to hurt you. Can you stand up? How are your legs?”   “I’m……Okay……ssssss” He hissed because of pain and rubbed his right ankle. But he was not angry or depressed. He grabbed Janet’s ankle and shouted:   “Master! Teach me kung-fu please!!!”   Oh karate is not some kind of kung-fu though. Matt smiled.   That was total embarrassment. More and more students were gathering along the corridor, all glaring and laughing at them. Janet’s cheek blushed instantly.   “Get up Harvey. I’m your teacher and I know NOTHING about kung-fu!!!”   “Seems she wants to keep it a secret.” Matt walked to Harvey and patted on his shoulder, “Get up gentleman. Let’s try another time.”   He grinned and whispered, “I’ll help.”   Janet’s reddish cheek looked so… adorable. Matt thought when he was grabbed away the corridor.   “It’s your fault! Why you told him I do karate? And why on earth did Jack tell you that?!”   “Calm down, calm down.” He cupped her fist.   “To protect yourself, you have to be strong. But you’re strong enough, all you should do is to show them your strength and make them fear.” He said, preoccupied.   “The world is not gentle at all, even when you are dealing with teenagers.”     She was waiting for him at the school gate.   A friend(?) from high school. And her first love.   When she realized “her” identity, she met him, a beautiful and extremely cold boy.   He thought she was “him”. She was afraid to ruin the friendship with him, so she just followed him every day, without telling him her true identity.    That day, all her courage pushed her to say those words in front of him, and his “friends”. He was humiliated, tortured, and abandoned by her first love.   Levi began humming the song she loved;   When I was young I'd listen to the radio Waitin' for my favorite songs When they played I'd sing along It made me smile.   Those were such happy times And not so long ago How I wondered where they'd gone But they're back again Just like a long lost friend All the songs I loved so well.   All my best memories Come back clearly to me Some can even make me cry. Just like before It's yesterday once more.
