Chapter 13: IncomingOn the other side of Exmouth, State Police Detective Adrienne Hall sat reading Officer Ricky Hanlon's report on the Gerbers' ash-scattering ceremony. She didn't mind working on a Saturday night. Things tended to get so crazy downstairs, the incoming flood from parties, accidents, fights, and whatnot, that nobody cared if you squirreled yourself away upstairs in Pete Altman's empty office. Nobody noticed if you hadn't done your hair or put on makeup. You could kick off your shoes, leave the lid off your coffee, and hear yourself think.
The quiet made it easier to translate official prose into a 3-D picture. Officer Hanlon's report drew a sketch of what had happened aboard the schooner Calliope. Perspective and color would come from interviews tomorrow with the Gerbers'
