Nobody noticed if you hadn't done your hair or put on makeup. You could kick off your shoes, leave the lid off your coffee, and hear yourself think. The quiet made it easier to translate official prose into a 3-D picture. Officer Hanlon's report drew a sketch of what had happened aboard the schooner Calliope.
