Chapter 1— The Princess of Velmore.
Chapter One - A Princess in Velmore. Sitting in front of the mirror on her dressing table, Princess Miranda looked calm as she let her maid Pelosi brush her hair. Pelosi held her golden hair with so much care as she brushed it. She had been doing her hair for two years now, and that was the longest any maid had ever stayed with Miranda doing her hair. "Ouch!" Miranda yelled , watching Pelosi in the mirror. Pelosi felt like the ground was going to open and swallow her. "My princess, I am so…" "Get out!" She screamed. Pelosi opened her mouth to apologize again, but the look Miranda gave her, made it clear she meant what she just said and wasn’t going to say it again. She closed her mouth and dropped the brush on the table her days of styling the Princess’s hair were over. Then she bowed and left. "Send in Ella." Miranda said, turning her head away from her. "Yes, your highness." A few minutes later, Ella came in. “Your Highness.” She bowed. Then picked up the brush and carefully brushed her hair not wanting to offend her. Miranda was quiet this time and just kept staring at her reflection in the mirror. Her hair was the same pale gold it had always been. Her lips were naturally rosy, so she never bothered much with color unless it was evening. Her eyes were her mother's or so she had been told. She would not really know. People sometimes got a strange look on their face when they met her eyes for the first time. The sun was not out yet, but the day had already begun for her. Well this has been her routine for some years now. She was about to say something when suddenly she heard a knock on the door. It was still early, so who could be at the door this time? She thought. Ella looked at her through the mirror, and when she received her signal she went to answer it. "My princess, it's Lord Cedric. He wants to speak with…" No, not this morning, Miranda almost said out loud, but she kept it in. "Send him in." She straightened herself and got up from the chair. "Your highness." Lord Cedric bowed lightly as he walked in. He was a man in his late fifties, the king's right hand the only person King Aldous ever sent when he wanted a message delivered to his daughter. Well that was because he is the only person she would listen to. And the only person she would argue with. Few seconds passed and he still had not spoken a word, rather just there with a smile on his face, and that alone irritated Miranda so much. She bit her lips to stop herself from yelling at him. "Would you just stand there smiling all day or say something?" she snapped. "Oh forgive me my Princess." His smile did not move. Miranda knew it, he was about to say something that she would not like. Anytime he had that smile on whatever he would say would either be unpleasant or something they would argue about. "The new candidates are here." "New candidates?" She asked confused. "Candidates for your bodyguard selection, since you didn't care for anyone from the first set." A small pause. "And your father wanted me to tell you if you don't choose from these, he'll choose for you." She slammed her left hand on her forehead not again. Her last bodyguard had been dismissed only two days ago, and now her father had brought a second set of men for her to pick through like she hadn't already made her feelings clear the first time. "Must I have a bodyguard at all? There are guards everywhere in this palace." She pouted. Lord Cedric's eyes remained calm. His voice, this time was softer than before. "Yes, my princess. You must, you are a princess." He paused, and then he continued, this time his tone had dropped even further. "You are the only child of the king. The only heir to Velmore. If anything happened to you, it would not only touch your father …it would touch the whole kingdom." "Fine. Fine." Miranda nearly yawned through the last of it. There was no point arguing over something that had already been decided somewhere above her head. "I'll pick one today. Not because I want to. But because I have to." And that was the simple truth. She honestly did not want a tall, broad-shouldered, hard-faced man trailing her through every hallway like she was a child who couldn't be trusted alone. But her father had never asked her for anything not since she was a child, not since it had only ever been the two of them. This was the first thing he'd ever wanted from her. So she would do it. She would have a bodyguard. Cedric's smile finally shifted into something more genuine. He knew he'd won. On any other morning they'd have gone back and forth over this same argument until she wore him down or he wore her down but not today. And whatever made her agree so easily, he was not going to question it. "After you, my princess." He held out his hand toward her. Miranda sighed and turned to the mirror one final time, checked that the small strand of hair was still in place, placed her hands in his , and went to choose the one person that would change her life. Or ruin it.
