Chapter1
Torrential rain makes it difficult to move.
The raindrops pelted on the umbrella rapidly, and the strong impact made Scarlett almost unable to hold the handle of the umbrella.
The chill of winter lingers, yet the briskness of early spring makes an unexpected debut.
The severe cold of winter has not completely disappeared, but the early spring is quietly emerging.
Upon reaching her destination, she looks down to find herself thoroughly drenched.
The straps of her long boots, made of soft lambskin, have soaked through the puddles, losing their original texture. The hem of her pleated skirt is wet, marked with trails of rain, and her down jacket begins to feel the creeping chill of the rain.
Not to mention the cake box she's been carrying, now dripping with water.
Such a disheartening moment.
Scarlett had put a lot of thought into this meeting with her boyfriend, but unexpectedly encountered a torrential downpour.
She closed her umbrella on the steps, and after making sure she was at the right dormitory building, she walked in with her dripping wet umbrella and cake.
The school had not yet started, and the dormitory was unusually quiet, with no sign of the dormitory supervisor.
Scarlett had intended to greet her, but instead found a power outage notice posted on the glass window of the supervisor's office.
Due to the storm, there was a line fault, and emergency repairs were underway.
Scarlett didn't mind it much; since the supervisor was not around, she went straight into the dormitory, climbed the stairs, and made her way up to the fifth floor.
Standing in front of dorm room 504, she checked her phone, entered the password provided by Nathan, and the door lock clicked open.
As one of the top universities in the country, Jiangbei University offers excellent accommodation conditions, with apartment-style double rooms equipped with password locks, and each room furnished with beds, desks, and wardrobes.
This was Scarlett's first time entering Nathan's dormitory, and also her first visit to his university.
It had been more than half a year since their last meeting in the heat of summer.
Their vacations had not aligned, delaying their reunion time and again.
When Nathan was on winter break, Scarlett was still abroad; by the time she returned to the country, Nathan had already gone back to school to participate in a professor's practical project.
The missed meetings no longer mattered. Scarlett was on vacation now and could see him anytime.
Just like today, she took an early morning flight from Haicheng to surprise Nathan on his birthday.
Scarlett gently placed her umbrella by the door, which closed with a soft click. The faint light inside revealed traces of Nathan's solitary existence.
The dormitory's silence spoke of loneliness, with an empty bed and desk awaiting their owner's return.
Nathan had mentioned that the term hadn't started yet, and only a few students involved in projects had returned to school early.
Scarlett set the cake on the desk, relieved to see it undamaged despite the rain's embrace.
After freshening up in front of the bathroom mirror, she lazily sat back down, checking her phone—it was five in the afternoon.
Lightning split the sky, and the rain grew fiercer, darkness flooding in like a tide.
Scarlett, who feared the dark, felt the chill of the rain-soaked clothes making the darkness even more sinister.
She wrapped herself in her down jacket, seeking a sliver of warmth.
As time slowly passed, Scarlett's heartbeat quickened with the sound of the rain.
She had wanted to surprise Nathan, but impatience took over in the dark, and her call went unanswered.
Setting down her phone, Scarlett's gaze blurred as she stared at the cake, her thoughts drifting away.
Exhaustion crept up on her, and she involuntarily laid her head on the desk, eyes closing slowly.
The rain sounded like an eternal melody, where darkness and time lost their meaning.
Suddenly, other noises broke the rain's solo.
Scarlett woke up startled, her hearing acutely sharp in the dark, sensing someone entering.
The sound of the door closing—was it Nathan returning?
She tried to open her heavy eyelids but lacked the strength to speak.
Footsteps approached, a tall, slender silhouette appeared, seemingly Nathan.
In the blackout, he didn't turn on the light or use his phone, instead moving by memory towards Scarlett.
As he was about to pass by, Scarlett finally gathered some energy, sitting up with a hint of complaint in her voice.
"Nathan, why did you only just come back?"
The figure paused, the faint light from outside barely outlining two shadows.
Scarlett's voice was tinged with complaint but mostly coquettish.
"Do you know how long I've been waiting for you? It's so dark and cold here."
She reached out, touching his hand in the dimness, his response a brief pause before trying to withdraw.
Scarlett felt the rejection, holding on tighter.
In their tearing, Scarlett accidentally fell from the chair, and he stumbled down too.
Scarlett's knees hit the ground, the sudden pain causing her to frown, realizing she was on top of him.
She felt the hardness of his bones and the tension of his muscles, as well as his attempt to push her away.
Scarlett, displeased, sat on his legs.
"Don't hide from me."
Her words were soft yet firm.
"If you hide from me again, I'll get angry."
He paused for a moment.
Scarlett took the opportunity to bite his throat, only letting go after hearing his muffled groan.
The next moment, her wrist was gripped tightly.
His palm was cool, carrying the chill of the spring rain.
The sound of rain echoed in the enclosed space, the two silent and close, their breathing heavy.
Scarlett could barely see his face, only feeling the unfamiliar yet pleasant scent at the tip of her nose.
It was then that she realized she no longer recognized Nathan's scent.
She deliberately buried her nose in his neck, gently tracing it.
Her fingers touched the drawstring of his sweatpants but were once again firmly held.
Scarlett struggled, but he was more determined to stop her.
Their breaths mingled, lips almost touching.
Scarlett was momentarily dazed, finally recognizing the unfamiliar scent as not belonging to Nathan.
He was not Nathan but Nathan's roommate, Matthew.
