Chapter3

The car hummed quietly through the empty city streets, tinted windows hiding Sarah from the prying eyes outside. She hadn't spoken since she agreed to marry Alexander and got into his car. Silence, she quickly realized, was part of his power. "You are quiet," he said finally, voice low and measured." I like to observe before I speak," she replied with a neutral tone, careful not to let her curiosity show. He didn't respond. Eyes forward, every movement precise, controlled and unyielding. Sarah's mind raced with questions that needed answers." WHY HER? WHY NOW? WHAT DID HE EXPECT FROM HER?" She felt him watching, not looking at her exactly but measuring and calculating. "I assume you have a lot of questions," he said after a long pause. "Yes," she said in a calm but deliberate tone. ''First, why me?" He replied "You handled a scandal once, quietly and efficiently. You survive under pressure. That's rare." "That's why you want me," she pressed, testing him. "Partly," he admitted. "Mostly because you have left to lose." Her gaze shifted to him through the shadows. Cold. Dark. Ruthless. Impossible. He looked like a storm dressed in a suit. "So let me get this straight. You want to marry me and, in return, what do I gain exactly?" she said slowly and carefully. He turns toward her, gaze sharp and dark." You protect your reputation. I gain a partner. One who can handle the pressures that come with my name". Sarah's lips curved into the faintest smile. She noted every word, every pause and every subtle threat hidden in his clipped voice. "You make it sound clinical,"she said softly. "Marriage is never about love in my world. It's about survival and survival. Miss Vale requires rules." He parked the car and gestured to a sleek leather chair in the back of the car and told her to sit. He opened a black briefcase and handed over a laid out contract to her. Sarah stared at the contract handed to her—terms, sharp and precise, almost ruthless. The duration was for a year but renewable if both parties agree to it. She would be required to make public appearances, control scandal exposure involving the Blackwood Empire. She would also have access to Alexander's social and business circles. There would be no interference in personal finances or private matters unless agreed. Alexander also maintains full executive control over business matters while she retains freedom within the agreed boundaries. Sarah absorbed every word, expression neutral. She wasn't surprised at the level of precision. "Sounds....fair," she said carefully. Alexander's lips twitched faintly. "Good," he said, placing a pen and folder before her. Her hand hovered. One stroke . One choice. Her future — but also the beginning of a game where the players disregard the rules, and she could end up losing everything totally. "You realize this doesn't make you my savior," she said softly. "It makes us...allies by necessity." "I know," he said simply. Cold. Certain. Dominant. She signed the contract. Alexander picked up the folder, slid it back into his briefcase. "You'll find my rules simple. Follow them, and nothing else matters," he said. Sarah leaned back. "I'm already used to rules," she said. "I just prefer to bend them." His dark glaze lingered. "Good. I prefer someone who can play the game." Silence returned to the car. Cold, heavy, unbroken. But beneath the professionalism, beneath the contract, a spark had ignited — quiet, dangerous and undeniable. Neither trusted the other. Neither intended to. But both knew this marriage would change everything.
