The feeling of needing to get to her was overwhelming for Josh. He almost felt crazy and it didn't help that Trenton was ringing the alarm bells inside his head.
'We could drive there.' Trenton said
'It's almost a 7 hour drive.'
'That means we would be there in 7 hours not 24.'
'This is nuts Dude.' Josh looked at the clock 9am he would there roughly around 4pm. Almost perfect if he wanted to catch her leaving work.
'Not really. We need to protect our mate because she is important to us.'
'Fine. We don't really know where we are going.' Josh picked up his luggage and headed for his truck.
'We start with what we know. She exited that building and went right.' Trenton was uneasy. To feel that vibrate through the mating bond without her even acknowledging it is pretty amazing.
Nicole
She packed her car up while Officer Olson sat in his car doing paperwork. She was fine with that. It didn't take her long to pack up and lock up behind her.
As she was getting ready to get in her car Officer Olson looked at her and they waved to each other and she took off.
As she drove she thought about the letter, who was Sabrina? Why would she never see Uncle again? Who was the lawyer that thought Uncle was her father? She had never called him that, it was no secret that he was her Uncle.
She wished he was here to help her decifer all of this. Did she even want pursue it? Would it bring her parents back? Bring her Uncle back?
"No, but it might bring them justice." She answered herself out loud not really recognizing her own voice.
Her little VW Bug turned on to the highway headed to St. Louis turning the radio on.
Josh sat in his truck on the opposite of the door he had last seen her at. He watched until the security guard locked it up and didn't see her.
He sat in his truck but didn't want to leave. He could see her face, rain soaked and perfect, he could hear her voice ringing in his ears.
He got out of his truck and walked down the way she had left. Dusk was upon them but the sun wasn't gone yet.
Josh was dressed in jeans and a light weight hoodie with Adidas tennis shoes. He didn't look anything like when he was here for a meeting. He walked and figured she'd have to live close if she walked to work.
He was studying the buildings and sort of trying to see if anyone left their shades open not really paying attention to where he was walking.
Suddenly he felt something hit his chest and it pushed him backwards and he ended up landing on his back with a body lying on top of him.
He felt this searing burning and her scent invaded his nose. His world was spinning as he tried to see her. She scurried to get up off of him her hoodie over her head obscuring her face.
"I am so....soooryyy." The words faded as she pulled back her hoodie to apologize. "wait, I have seen you before." Nicole looked into his eyes and she actually felt something move inside her. Similar to the first time she looked in his eyes.
"Hi." was all Josh could say. Trenton groaned inside and took over. "I am the sorry one. I was not looking where I was going. Are you okay?" He looked her up and down. "You do look familiar to me." He hoped that she couldn't see his heart beating in his chest.
She wanted to leave, turn and run the other way but something didn't let her. She just stood there looking at him.
"Can I buy you a smoothie or something? I feel terrible and sometimes injuries take a bit to show up so I'd like to make sure you are alright." Josh regained composure and took back control. Her auburn hair was a bit messy from the hoodie but Josh thought it was adorable. "Please." He almost begs.
Then almost like he saw her regain control she backed away turned and ran the other way.
"Wait!" He took a few steps after her but then thought better of it.
Nicole
She barely could hear what he said to her. Her body was on fire as she pushed herself off of him. Once she wanted to run her legs wouldn't work. She could only look at him, locked into his eyes.
She saw his mouth moving but she didn't hear anything. Eventually her legs moved and she was able to run away.
Her mind was spinning. She heard him yell after her but she didn't want to stop. Her heart was beating wildly in her chest and when she felt like she could stop she did to catch her breath.
Standing there leaning back she the fence she didn't notice the car that was tailing her. Before she knew it someone jumped out of this car and started pulling her off the road. She resisted pulling against them and with strength she didn't know she had she started winning the battle.
Suddenly there was a body between her and them pulling off thier grip. She fell free back on the fence hitting her head. She saw him fighting them and chasing them back into thier cars. He wrote down thier plate number as they sped away.
"Who are you?" Nicole was feeling light headed as he knelt next to her.
"Where do you live? I will bring you home." He picked her up in his arms.
"I have a tazer." She said and then pointed towards her apartment building kitty corner from where they were.
"Very good." He smiled at her and walked across the street.
She guided him up the stairs and to the door. "Here you are. Are you okay?" The concern in his eyes didn't get lost on her.
"I will be. I suppose I could invite you in." She felt obligated but she also wanted him there. She felt safe with him.
"Sure." He shoved his hands in his pockets trying to hide his excitement. She was jumpy but he was intoxicated by her.
She opened her door and Shadow came running to the open door. He went right passed her and rubbed on Josh. "My name is Nicole. You are?"
"Josh Stevens." He picked up Shadow looking at him and petting him.
He was overwhelmed with her scent as he walked in. He almost couldn't keep control of Trenton. She definitely had no idea what she was. Trenton couldn't connect with her wolf but could feel something.
"Water?" She asked as she walked into her kitchen.
"Sure." There was a box on the table and a tin box that was old. "Wow, cool tin box. Do you collect them?"
"That box seems to have a long story attached to it." She handed him his water and sat across from him.
"Oooo do tell." Josh was starting to feel more like himself. He saw her face and demor change. "Nevermind if you don't want to talk about it."
"Thank you. I am still trying to wrap my head around everything. My Uncle passed away about 9 days ago and ever since all this wierd stuff has happened." She pulled her Braid around and took the binder off and started unraveling her hair.
"You can trust me. I already saved you once. Obviously I am on your side." He was memorized by her fingers dancing on her hair.
"I don't know." She paused "My parents were killed in a plane crash when I was just a baby. My Moms 3rd cousin adopted me and raised me as a single father. Now that he passed he left me a note about them maybe being murdered. Which gave me the creepies and then this wierd guy came to our house pretending to be something he's not and now this. You could be considered a wierd thing too. I mean this is just too much." She giggled to herself. She had no idea what she was doing to him.
As hard as it was he finished his water. She had tried to run once and he didn't want to push it "Well, I should Maybe go before you use that tazer on me." He smiled and made his way to the door. Her hair was loose around her and it took his breath away.
"Sounds good. Maybe I will run into you again." She made a joke.
"I could only be so lucky." Josh paused for a moment and then wrote his number on a peice of paper next to the door. "Maybe next time we can talk more about the wierd things happening. Catch you later." He joked back and walked out the door.
Josh stood outside her door for a few moments. Just soaking it all up. He couldn't keep the smile off his face as he walked down the hallway.
Nicole watched him shut the door and let out a breath. "Wow." Shadow jumped up in the table "I know, I liked him too." Her face went flush thinking of him. Sad he was gone.
She looked at her watch is was only 7pm. She got busy making herself something to eat and got lost in thoughts of him. She couldn't stop thinking of him but she had to just put that out of her mind. She had other things to think about.
The box almost seemed to loom at her from the counter. She washed her dishes and put them away.
She sighed and picked up the box and opened it on her kitchen table. She read the letter from her Uncle again. "I wonder if he has been protecting me against something. Why would someone want to kidnap me off the street NOW?" She had so many questions.
She wondered if going through this box would leave her with even more questions. She pulled the envelope out with the pictures in it and studied them. Looked at the background and tried to take in all the details.
She set them aside and pulled the next thing out of the box. It was a file full of articles her Uncle had collected. She got up and poured herself a glass of wine and came back to her table. She was going to read each article and write down her questions as she did so.
She suddenly wanted Josh there, he'd be another set of eyes for her. He did save her from getting kidnapped and that meant he wasn't going to hurt her like Uncle always warned.
