SHE'S BACK
CHAPTER ONE.
RHIANNON’S POV.
“s**t! Lucien is going to kill me!” I cry as I hastily peel my white lab coat off of my body and blindly throw it to the side, hoping it falls on the couch that’s beside me and not on the floor. Lucien is my five-year-old son and if I’m not at his school in the next five minutes to pick him up, I will not hear the end of it. Usually, on days when I know I will be tied up with work, I assign one of his nannies at home to pick him up from school, but I had no idea today would be so hectic. I lost track of time.
I pick up my handbag from the sofa and just as I’m about to leave, the door to my office bursts open and Daisy, a nurse, stumbles in, breathless and panting.
“Luna Rhiannon!” She shouts, but her scream comes out as a breathless wheeze. Her hands drop to her knees as she bends over and tries to catch her breath.
Is she being chased by a dog?
“Daisy, what’s going on?” I ask, alarmed as I rushed over to her, hoping whatever is chasing her doesn’t come through that door and start chasing me as well. She quickly stands upright and looks at me, still struggling to catch her breath and trying to move away the few strands of her that keep sticking on her damp forehead to clear her vision. She definitely took the stairs on her way here because she looks like a hot mess.
“We just got a call about a ghastly motor accident that happened at the roundabout that’s a ten-minute walk from the hospital. There were several injuries and right now the victims are being transported here. They are going to arrive any minute from now and the trauma unit has to be ready. Doctor Luna, you are the head of the trauma unit and, therefore, we will need you when those patients arrive.” She reports, and my plan of going to pick up Lucien from school is tossed over a cliff and all my doctor's senses become alert.
“Alright! I’m guessing we already have nurses preparing the emergency rooms and ORs and anesthesiologists are on standby. Please tell me they are.”
“Yes, Doctor. They are.”
“Great! Go join the others in the preparations. I’ll be there in one minute!”
“Yes doctor.” She spins around and starts sprinting again out of the office. I quickly pick up the lab coat I recently tossed away and put it back on. The next thing I do is fish out my phone from my handbag and dial a number. The call is picked on the second ring.
“Good afternoon, Luna Rhiannon.”
“Good afternoon, Alma. I need you to take the driver and as many guards as you can with you to go pick up Lucien from school. "There’s an emergency at the hospital, so I can’t go and get him myself.”
“That will be done with immediate effect, Luna.”
“Thank you.” I end the call and dash out of my office at the speed of light.
By the time I arrive at the hospital’s lobby, it’s in total commotion with people in scrubs and white coats running frantically, some pushing empty stretchers out, others pushing stretchers with injured people in and there’s a carnival of blaring ambulances outside the building.
Moon goddess help us!
******************************************
“Mummy!” Lucien, my baby boy, screams excitedly the moment I walk into the living room and his little legs carry him as fast as they can into my outstretched arms. The moment he crashes into me, I hug him tight, kiss his hair and inhale his scent with my eyes closed. I feel all my hunger and exhaustion wholly dissipate, and I feel rejuvenated.
This is my favorite part of the day. Coming home to hugs, kisses and cuddles from my son.
“My baby.” I coo as I kiss him all over his face. “Mummy missed you so much!”
“I missed you too, mummy.” He says and plants two delicate kisses on my cheeks and I almost start crying out of joy and happiness, but our precious moment is ruined when another person joins us in the living room.
Layla.
My husband’s ex-girlfriend.
I slowly rise to my feet with my gaze zeroed on her smiley face. She’s walking over to where I’m standing and soon stops a few meters from me.
“Good evening, Luna Rhiannon.” She greets her with a curt bow and I snort because I know she doesn’t mean it.
“Layla. What are you doing here?” I ask, trying my best to keep my voice and tone calm.
“Do I need a reason to be here?”
“As a matter of fact, yes, you do,” I say with a no nonsense look and the pretentious smile on her face fades. I guess she has understood I’m not in the mood to play games with her tonight.
“I am here because I picked Lucien up from school this afternoon and brought him home.”
“You did what?” I ask, aghast and she rolls her eyes and groans.
“I said I…”
“I heard you loud and clear!” I quickly cut her off with a hard glare. "You didn’t have to pick up my son from school. I already assigned his nanny to the task since I was occupied at work!” I fire back furiously, with my glare on her getting harder as the seconds tick by.
Layla and Alpha Fabien — my husband— have a quite long and interesting dating history that is still being talked about till date in this pack. Six years ago, everyone knew they were going to end up together as Alpha and Luna, but the moon goddess had other plans. She made me Alpha Fabien’s mate and because of that, Layla and Alpha Fabien’s relationship had to end.
Layla still hates me for that.
“Is that ungratefulness I sense in your tone? If anything, you should be thanking me for picking up your child from school when you failed to do so.” She firmly accuses.
Scheming Layla is back!
“You make it sound like I deliberately refused to go pick him from school myself. I didn’t because there was an emergency at the hospital therefore, I couldn’t leave. Besides, I asked his nanny to go along with a driver and many guards to pick him up!”
“You chose to stay at the hospital and take care of some lowly lives instead of going to pick up your son from school?” She asks and I stare at her in total disbelief. It’s been so long since we last had such a heated exchange that I completely forgot what an apathetic person she is.
She has not changed one bit.
“Lucien is the future Alpha of this pack.” She rants on. “It was wrong of you to send a common nanny to go pick him up from school. You have to be with him at all times!”
“Layla shut up! Stop talking nonsense.”
“Mummy.” Lucien’s little voice calls and I feel a little tug on my trouser. I look down at him and mortification overwhelms me when I realize what I’ve just done. I have been quarreling with Layla and raising my voice in my son’s presence. Something I avoid doing all the time. “Mummy” He calls again, looking up at me. “Don’t be mad at Aunt Layla for picking me up. We had such a great time together. Before bringing me back home, she took me for a drive around the city and then we went to the park and she bought me candy, ice cream and very delicious cookies.” He reports excitedly and my frown returns to my face as I cast Layla another furious glare.
“No, you did not!”
“You should be thanking me for feeding and entertaining your child when you couldn’t!”
“Lucien has a weak stomach and several allergies, that’s why I personally monitor everything he eats. You had no right to get him any of those things. This will not happen again!” I warn, firmly pointing my index finger at her.
“Relax, Rhiannon! It was just candy and ice cream. Who on earth is allergic to those? Gosh, you are such a wet blanket! First you don’t thank me for picking up your son in your absence and now, you’re berating me for feeding and entertaining him. What kind of mother are you?”
“The one who did not ask you to do any of those things!”
“You know what? I’m out of here.” She says, throwing her hands in the air and looking down at Lucien who doesn’t seem happy with what’s going on. “Good night sweet pie and good luck with your killjoy mother.” I gasp in shock as I watch her playfully ruffle my son’s hair before walking out of the house. I release a heavy breath and look down at Lucien who seems to be frowning at me.
“Look honey…” I start to talk but he cuts me off.
“Mummy, you shouldn’t have been so mean to Aunt Layla. She meant no harm.” He rebukes me and I stay silent because how do I start making a five-year-old understand that when I was pregnant with him, the same Aunt whom he thinks likes him intentionally pushed me down a flight of stairs so I would have a miscarriage?
How do I explain to him that after she found out that I had not lost the pregnancy after the fall, she came into my ward while I was resting and tried to force me to drink silver which is poisonous to us werewolves, but I was stronger so I fought her off and when his father came in, she lied and said I tried to beat her up for no reason?
“Let’s go get you some medicine.” I say, stooping down to pick him up, but he runs away screaming.
“No! I feel fine! I don’t want to take any medicine. I don’t need it!”
“Yes, you do, young man. Now stop running away because you know I will catch you if I want to.” He instantly stops running and puts on a crying face. “Good boy.” I go over to him and pick him up and head for the stairs.
He doesn’t smile or talk to me the entire time I find his medicines and feed them to him. He has his mouth shut in a very cute pout and his tiny brows are lowered and creased just like his father’s when he’s upset about something.
Cute.
“Now, take off your clothes so I can bathe you.”
“Mummy you always make me unhappy, and I hate you for that! Unlike you, Aunt Layla is nice and caring and I’m happy daddy asked her to pick me up from school.”
My heart flips so suddenly and I feel blood pause in my veins.
“It was your father who asked Layla to pick you up from school?” I ask in a quiet tone and Lucien nods vigorously as he says;
“Yes!”
