Abaddon’s POV
It had only been thirty minutes since the ceremony. I walked around speaking with many people. Many I knew, and a few I had only met tonight. Either way, all said the similar felicitations.
I went to look for Darien. Maybe he would want to ditch this thing by now and go for a run.
He was among a few men from the pack. They were discussing plans for possible expanding our training of warriors.
I interrupted, “Should plans like this be mentioned to the Alpha? I heard he is ruthless.” I chuckled.
“Sorry Alpha,” they all said at once.
I had not used my Alpha tone, but already everyone was giving me immense levels of respect. It was kind of getting exhausting.
“I agree on the efforts of training more warriors,” I said and turned to Darien. “A word?”
“Sure,” he answered and followed me to a quiet place away from the party.
The trees here did not have hanging lights, so it would be a great spot to stay away.
“So, what did you need?” Darien asked.
“Run?” I responded.
“I can’t. Veronica would kill me. She has her friend here and doesn’t want me far.” I noticed he was gazing back at the party.
“You two never seem to take a breath. You will need to manage that a bit better when we get to work in the morning,” I was using my Alpha tone this time.
“Yes Alpha,” he answered. “You will understand when you find your mate.”
“If.”
“What do you mean?” he was visibly confused.
“I don’t believe I will ever find her,” sadness was laced in my voice.
“Dude cheer up. She is out there. You deserve the best.” He slapped my back and directed me back to the party.
“Besides, there are loads of other she wolfs here tonight from other packs to congratulate you. Maybe one of them could be your mate,” he was trying to reassure me.
“I have met all of them already. My mother insisted after the ceremony was over,” I told him.
Just then the scent of oranges and honeysuckles reached my nose. I looked around. We had not placed any oranges out for the party. Come to think of it, honeysuckle was not in bloom this time of year.
I started to walk toward the scent. I grew stronger the closer I got to a large group of people near the dance floor.
As I reached the group, a girl stepped out and collapsed. I caught her just before she hit the ground.
Oranges and honeysuckles.
She looked up at me and I involuntarily spoke, “MATE!”
Then she passed out in my arms. I picked her up fill bridal style. Veronica came running out of the crowd next.
“No, no, no, no.” She was now freaking out.
“Follow me,” I commanded Veronica.
“Yes, Alpha. Where to?”
I did not respond. She would follow me either way. I felt she was responsible for whatever had happened to my angel. I was furious.
When we reached the infirmary, Veronica stopped. “She is human Abaddon. She needs to go to a normal hospital.”
I still did not speak. Our doctors were more than capable of taking care of a human. Though, we had not had humans here in a long time.
I settled her down onto the bed just as the doctor entered the room. I turned to Veronica who was staring in fear at her friend.
“Veronica, what happened?” I boomed.
She snapped her gaze to me, tears streaming down her face. “She drank our drinks! I spoke with your mother for five minutes and she was downing the drinks like water.”
“How many?” She looked at me confused. “How many did she drink?”
“I don’t know, but either way it's what happened. It has to be,” she was a mess.
I mind linked Darien to come to get his mate out of my face. I was angry.
Darien was there in less than a minute. “What happened?”
“Your careless mate. Get her out of my sight,” I commanded.
He did not argue. I was protecting this woman. She was mine. Human, but mine.
“She is fine. It was not the drinks, sir.”
The doctor pulled my stare away from her. “It wasn’t? Then explain why she collapsed.”
“I cannot, sir. But I can tell you one thing from my years of experience in this field,” he was now talking in riddles.
“What? Just tell me plainly.”
He stood firmly in his place. With a blanket expression, he said, “She is not human.” Then he walked out.
I glanced at her. Human? I thought.
I followed the doctor out of the room. He was standing waiting for me.
“What is she then?” I asked him. millions of questions floated around my head. She didn’t smell like a wolf.
I was however relieved. The goddess had not given me a human mate. But she was not a wolf either. She would be weaker, and I would need to protect her.
“I cannot say. Whatever she is, it has not revealed itself to her either.”
I nodded my thanks to the doctor and turned back to head into the room. I stopped at the door and looked toward the doctor.
“Why did she pass out? She seemed drained. She collapsed into my arms,” I asked.
“I am unsure. It seems whatever she is, is trying to show itself.” He turned and left.
I walked into the room. She was sound asleep. I sniffed the sir. The room was full of her scent. I sat down in a chair near her.
This was my escape from the party. I settled back into a chair and drifted off to sleep.
I was awakened by a tugging on my arm. There was a small blonde and blue-eyed boy there. He had the biggest smile on his face.
“Good. You are awake,” a woman spoke from across the room.
I stood to my feet. “Who are you?”
“Her mother. I will be taking her home with me. She should have never come here. It was a mistake to allow her on pack territory,” she spoke strongly.
I could smell her from where I stood. She had a rouge wolf scent all over her along with the scent of something else.
“You will not take her anywhere,” I commanded.
She looked at me with a smirk. “Ah, boy. She is not yours. She can never be.”
“I can smell you. You smell of your mate. But he is not her father,” I wanted answers.
“You are a smart boy. How did you figure it out? Was it the lack of wolf in her?” she laughed.
“You know already.”
“Her father was many years ago. I don’t know much about him. He left a long time ago.” She sounded sad as she looked at her daughter.
“Do you know what she is?” I commanded her to answer me.
“You might as well know you cannot use your alpha tone on me. It will not work. However, I will tell you. She is like me. She’s a witch. At least she is from my family. A long line of women,” she sounded as though she knew more.
“What else?”
“She is stronger than any other witch in my family. We are all strong women, but something else makes her stronger. That I do not know of. I have hidden her powers and this whole world from her.” She had waved her hand around as if to refer to the wolfs.
“You hid her powers from her?” I was angry. My mate had no idea who she was.
“Yes. It was for her protection,” She was looking dead t me.
“From what?” She didn’t respond.
Just then, the little boy was pulling on my arm. I looked down and he smiled.
“Hello little guy,” I said.
“Hi. Is my mommy okay?” he asked.
“I spoke with the doctor and he said your mommy was just sleepy,” I said while leaning down to him.
He let go of me and walked over to his mother. He touched her hand then he kissed her cheek. Her eyes fluttered open.
“Mommy!” he said excitedly.
“Hey, baby boy.” She looked around the room, then asked, “where am I?”
I explained what had happened to her and how I brought her here. I left out the part that she was my mate. Clearly, she didn’t feel the connection yet.
She wasn’t surprised a bit. She laughed at the fact she fell into my arms. “So, I fell for you and didn’t even get to catch your name.”
I shrugged, “I am Abaddon.” I was respecting her mothers secret a bit longer.
“Well thank you. I will be heading home with my family now. Goodbye.” She got up and walked out with her family.
What had the goddess done? I was alone again, this time because I let her getaway. What would I do?
Veronica. She would help me.
