Athens POV
The entire car ride home was silent between my mother and I. Aleksandr had fallen asleep shortly after our drive began.
There was a deafening tension flowing off of my mother. It was like I could see her anger pouring off of her.
I kept my eyes locked on the window, not looking at anything particularly. I was ready to go home and rest.
When we reached the house, I got Aleksandr out and we headed inside. My father greeted us.
"Hey there, kiddo. How are you feeling?" he asked in a nervous tone.
"I am fine. I must have passed out from another dizzy spell," I tried to pass off the conversation.
Suddenly, the smell of dirt and mold filled my nose again. I scrunched up my face.
"What is that awful smell? Have you checked for leaks in the house?" I asked my dad.
He looked at me with a questioning look. Then my mother walked into the house. She glared at us.
Turning to Aleksandr, I whispered for him to head upstairs. Once I knew he was out of earshot, I turned back to my parents.
"What is going on with you two?" I asked annoyed.
Two days in a row they seemed to be having a silent spat. I wanted to what was going on.
It was my dad that spoke while looking at my mother. "We might as well tell her finally."
"Tell me what? Please tell me you guys are not getting a divorce!" I was now freaking out.
"Oh heavens no, Athena!" my mother replied.
"Then why the hell are you two being so cryptic?" Now I was slowly getting furious.
"Sit down," my mother spoke sternly.
I sat on the couch anticipating their every word. They shared a knowing look and sat in their chairs.
"Athena, you are very special honey," my mother spoke.
I rolled my eyes. "Okay, so you're adopting a baby or kid or something. What? Don't want me to be upset? Come on. I am an adult."
"No. You won't be getting any new siblings. You are annoying enough," my dad joked. He has a sarcastic funniness about him.
"Okay. Then spill the beans," I was anxious now.
"You are a witch."
I looked at my mom. Had I really heard what she just said? I began to laugh. this was the best joke ever.
"Athena!" my mother shouted to capture my attention.
I stopped laughing and looked at her. "Sorry, I couldn't help it. You guys are so funny"
"This is not a joke. You are a witch. A child of the moon. I am a witch, too. Your grandmother was. The bloodline is very old," my mother spoke sternly.
I listened intently. This was not a joke.
"Why tell me now? How did I never know this?" I had a million questions.
"I wanted to protect you," my mother simply said.
"From what?" I needed answers.
"From who..." she paused and looked at my father. He was on edge as much as I was. She continued, "I did it to protect you from yourself."
I was speechless. I had no idea what that meant. My mother must have seen my dumb look because she went on with the explaining.
"I have been hiding your powers from you since you were young. I think it is part of why you have the dizzy spells. You came into your powers extremely young. Most of us do not receive our powers until we are teens. You, however, received yours just a year old," she was now looking towards the ground.
"A year? That is shortly before you met dad," I said. I then looked at him. "Did you know?"
"I did. By the time I had met your mother, you were already under the hidden spell. Your mother never hid it from me. She told me and I helped to protect you," he sounded regretful.
"Why does it sound like there is more?" I asked sternly.
My mother sighed. "Because I was also hiding you from your father. Your biological father. He knew about your powers and wanted to take you away from me."
I saw a few tears fall from my mother's face. I let go of some of my anger. I understood why she would do this. I just felt it was my right to know sooner.
After about five minutes of silence, I asked, "Why?"
Both my parents looked at me in confusion.
"Why did I get them so young?" I was asking about my powers.
"I don't really know. You're so much stronger than any of us. I really do not have answers for that. But I can tell you this," she took a deep breath. "As the spell wears off, you will slowly stop ha ing dizzy spells, I believe. The spell will fade away and slowly your powers will be revealed to you."
I wondered about my powers. I had so many questions, but they would have to wait.
I stood from the couch and went upstairs. I was still wearing the gown from the party yesterday and wanted a shower.
When I got to my room I saw Aleksandr playing with his cars quietly. I pat his head and grabbed some clothes.
I took a shower and pulled my hair into a wet sloppy bun. Put my clothes on and walked back out to find Aleksandr asleep on the floor with two cars in hand.
I picked him up and placed him in bed. It was late but as I looked around at all my scattered things, I felt the urge to clean.
I began to clean and organize all of my things. As I put the last of my clothes away I felt a slight uneasy dizzy spell.
"Athena."
The dizziness stopped and I looked around the room. No-one was there. Who spoke to me?
"Hello? Who is there?" I asked cautiously. Maybe someone was hiding somewhere.
I started searching everywhere. Under the bed. Behind the closet door. The bathroom. I looked out into the hall.
Nothing.
"You cannot see me currently, dear."
I jumped. The voice was clearly in my head.
I ran downstairs where I found my parents in the kitchen. They were preparing dinner together.
"I am f*****g going crazy!" I shouted.
Both of them stopped what they were doing and looked dead at me.
"What?" my mom asked.
"I am h-hearing t-things. Is it a ghost? Is that a thing?" I stumbled over my words.
"Yes, but that is my gift. You don't get the same gift as a parent," she said to me.
"I am not a ghost."
I screamed and looked around. What was going on?
"Oh, my goddess," my dad said.
I looked at him questioning. He said the same thing Veronica says.
My parents looked at each other. "You don't think?" he said to my mother.
"I wouldn't know. I barely knew much about him," she responded.
"They're incredibly weird. But I love them." The voice was speaking to me again.
"Stop that!" I shouted.
My parents looked at me confused.
"Not, you. The voice. She keeps talking. It's the same one from my dream the other day," I explained.
"Athena. Don't shout at her. She is a part of you," my dad spoke.
I made a scrunched up face.
"Follow me," he said and headed to the back yard.
I followed him and he motioned for me to stand still. I did. He walked behind some tall shrubs and I waited.
Suddenly, a large black and silver wolf jumped out from behind the shrub.
I didn't move. I could not breathe. I was terrified and frozen stiff.
The wolf laid down at my feet and whimpered. I looked down, still frozen stiff.
"That's your dad," I faintly heard my mother's voice.
I took another look down and seen the wolf's eyes. They were a Green color. My dad's eyes were blue, but I had seen them turn green occasionally. He had always passed it off as his mood or a shirt he wore.
I raised an eyebrow. "Dad?" I asked nervously.
The wolf's tail began to wag rapidly. Then he got up and licked my cheek. Gross. Then I noticed the smell. Mold and dirt. It came from my dad.
"I think you're like him. I think you're a wolf too. A hybrid," my mother spoke.
The wolf... I mean, my dad was now leaning into my mother and she was rubbing his head.
"I am a wolf?" I almost didn't hear myself.
My dad came and sniffed my hair, arm, and feet.
"I am NOT a wolf!" the voice said harshly.
"Nope. I am not a wolf. That is what she said," I told my mother.
"Azriel. My name is Azriel."
"Oh sorry, Azriel said."
"Oh she has such a pretty name," my mother cooed.
"She is literally named after the angel of death, mom. How is that lovely?" I asked.
"It is perfect. You are named after the Greek goddess of war. It only makes sense her name is as ruthless as yours," my mom was so happy and awing over me.
"So, when do I get to see you? Or change into you?" I thought to Azriel. I figured if she could talk to me in my mind, it worked both ways.
"For years, I have been hidden away by your mother's spell. I have tried to reach out to you since your sixteenth birthday. However, the spell was strong. Now, the spell is fading. I can speak with you, but it is not time to transform."
"Mom!" I shouted. "You hid Azriel from me too!"
"I am sorry honey. I never knew," she said apologizing.
"No more secrets. Promise me!" I demanded.
"I swear."
"I am sorry Azriel." I thought.
"It is not your fault darling. Your pains and dizzy spells will now stop. I will rest now."
With that Azriel was silent.
I went inside to get Aleksandr. This day was hectic. With so much information running through my head, I felt exhausted.
After dinner, the bed was calling my name. I carried Aleksandr to bed with me and we both drifted off to sleep land.
