Choose...
No Bondmate, no Pack.
No Alpha, no Luna.
Reaper is coming.
Bondmates are diamond.
Reaper doesn't break diamond.
Being an ex-Luna, Rowena was chosen to read the Alpha king's decree. Famously known as the 'western five'.
She stepped down from the wooden podium and made her way across to blue moon Pack, her former pack where she met Lily.
Beta Drogo, her betrothed and Bondmate, had introduced Lily to everyone four days ago. Lily was an omega yet Rowena was convinced that she was Drogo's enstranged little sister from another mother.
As always, Drogo didn't waste time to disappoint her. His next words made her halt in her tracks.
"Mate!" Drogo said. Not to her but to Lily.
Bondmates were a necessity to own a pack in the west. Drogo knows this. He also knows just how fast the Alpha king dissolves bondmates who can't be seen as a united front. He knows how desperate she is to get her pack back. So, why did Drogo choose now of all days to talk gibberish?
Rowena hesitated for a minute, thinking, calculating. But that little time was enough for Drogo to come to his senses. He quickly loosened his hands around Lily's waist and raised a cup of ale. "To my beautiful Bondmate and our soon to be Luna, Rowena. Long may she reign."
Everyone joined in unison. "Long may she reign! Long may she reign!!"
Rowena bit the inside of her tongue to hide her disbelief. 'Mate'. The word echoed again in her head.
Lily on the other hand, seems to be enjoying the moment. She didn't seem surprised. Somehow, her right hand had found its way back to Drogo's waist.
"This is wrong on so many levels, Lily," Rowena suggested. His recent utterance made her uncomfortable and possessive. "He may be your brother but he is my bondmate. You should stay away from him for the rest of today."
Lily was quiet for a minute. Her mood went sour. She suddenly began to hiccup before she ran out of the hall. Drogo made his move to follow her but Rowena held his hands. "You have to stay. For me. For us. Someone else can take care of her."
Drogo frowned. He looked towards the exit for quite some time but then he stayed with her. With each passing minute, Drogo's impatience grew. They were just two more bondmates ahead when he stood up unexpectedly from his seat.
"We are next." Rowena tried to block his path. "We shouldn't keep the Alpha king waiting."
"I will be back." Drogo growled. She flinched when he sidestepped her. He didn't spare her another glance till he was out of the king's hall.
Kathy, her best friend who had been observing the scene from a distance came rushing to her side.
"Bondmates are diamond and... Reaper is coming," kathy mimicked her.
Rowena smiled. She missed kathy. Kathy was a b***h when she needed to be. And a friend who knows how to make her smile no matter how awkward the situation.
When Rowena became the Luna of blue moon pack at thirteen, after her parents died in the war against the 'Reaper', kathy was eighteen and her only advisor.
It has been three years since the Alpha king seized her pack from her. He considered Rowena unfit to rule even though it was her birthright.
Kathy had proposed to make Drogo her bondmate as a strategy to keep the alliance between blue moon pack and red crescent pack intact. This was after Drogo's father broke faith.
"Quite a reminder, though," kathy said. She hugged her friend.
Just then, the Alpha king's secretary announced their name. Drogo hasn't come back.
Kathy rushed out of the hall hoping to find Drogo while Rowena led both packs to the end of the hall, where the Alpha king sat.
A sudden pain in her stomach made her gasp before she could make it to the Alpha king.
Gripping her stomach, she collapsed to the ground. What the hell was happening to her! Before long, she was rushed out of the hall when she started to empty the contents of her stomach.
When she finally opened her eyes the next day, she found herself in her room with kathy at her bedside.
"What happened?" She inquired from Kathy.
"Drogo f****d Lily. That is what happened." Kathy replied. She avoided Rowena's eyes which were red rimmed from crying.
Rowena understood then what had happened to her. In the werewolf world when your mate had s*x with another wolf after claiming and marking you, pain was inevitable for you.
It was the way the moon goddess served her punishment to mates. Fated or bonded. It couldn't have been avoided.
"They are fated mates. Not family. They fooled everyone," Rowena thought out loud.
Kathy anger boiled at Rowena's words. The realization that she never suspected both of them made her eager when Rowena suggested they visited the Alpha king in his office.
She didn't hesitate to strike Drogo with her fist when they met him already waiting at the office. In the tense confrontation, a foreign accent interrupted them. "How may I be of service friends?"
Rowena locked eyes with the brunette. It didn't take much for her to figure out that the woman before them whose skin was as smooth as porcelain doesn't belong in the west.
However, hearing her voice again, she immediately knew who she was.
Kathy spoke up."We seek to meet the Alpha king."
A small frown ghosted the secretary's face. " Am afraid Alpha Ontario isn't in. He left for Titan academy this morning."
"What does that mean?" Rowena asked impatiently.
"It means... he won't be coming back anytime soon. Is there anything else I can do to help?" She asked.
"That will be all." Kathy said before the secretary left them.
Angry, frustrated and nervous, Rowena collapsed into a nearby bench. Drogo on the other hand was full of self pity, he tended to his broken nose.
He sat at a distance, away from her in silence immediately the door to the Alpha king's office closed. His face held no sign of remorse for what he did to her.
When the door opened again, Kathy dragged in a nervous Lily, pulling her by her red hair. Drogo jumped out of his seat. "Get your hands off her now!"
"Or what?" Kathy countered standing toe to toe with the Beta.
"Just let her go!" Drogo said, this time in a calm voice.
Kathy released Lily who ran to Drogo's side. Kathy pulled her away from him. "My friend has had enough of your games, Drogo. Now is the time for you to chose. You can't have them both. Choose your fated mate or your bondmate."
Drogo eyes turned golden. He wolf was just beneath his skin. "You can't tell me what I can do and what I cannot do."
"Yes I cannot. But she can." Kathy pointed to Rowena.
'Choose...' The words echoed in her mind.
Rowena weighed her options. The odds of Drogo choosing her over his omega mate was ten to one. Years of being around him was enough to let her know how selfish and ambitious he was.
With her, he would become the Alpha of two packs, win the affection of his ungrateful father and there was the potential of being a future Alpha king. What was there to be ambitious about in a common Omega?
She made her decision. "Choose," she said. Her voice was tense however, it carried hope.
"Rowena," Drogo reached for her hands. He hissed at his futile attempt to curry some compassion from Kathy who was beyond convincing.
"You heard her." Kathy reminded him.
Drogo looked into Rowena's eyes. "You must understand Rowena," he began, "Fate always wins no matter what we do. I admire you. I really do. You have a good claim and the love of your people. But I must choose fate. I must choose Lily."
Drogo left with Lily. Miserable with no one else but Kathy to comfort her, Rowena wept.
The chances of getting back her pack was getting slender by the day.
