Chapter One: The Night That Chose Her
The storm didn’t ask permission before it arrived. It rolled over Blackridge town like something alive—heavy clouds swallowing the sky, wind twisting through empty streets, rain falling in violent sheets. The kind of night people locked their doors early and prayed nothing outside noticed them. Sierra Walker hated nights like this. Not because she feared the dark… but because the dark always felt like it was watching her back. She pulled her jacket tighter as she stepped out of the small convenience store, the flickering neon sign buzzing faintly above her. Her shift had ended late again. Same routine. Same silence. Same life she told herself she was satisfied with. Until the sound came. A low, distant growl. She stopped walking. The street was empty. Of course it was. Another sound—closer this time. Not quite animal. Not quite human. Her heartbeat stuttered. “Hello?” she called out, immediately regretting it. Only rain answered. She forced herself to laugh under her breath. “Great. Now I’m talking to ghosts.” She took one step forward— —and the world shifted. A flash of movement in her peripheral vision. Fast. Too fast.. Sierra turned sharply. Nothing. Then— A crash in the alley behind her. Her breath caught. Slowly, she moved toward it, every instinct screaming at her to run the other way instead. “Hello?” she whispered again, quieter now. The alley was darker than it should have been. The rain didn’t even seem to fall properly inside it, like the space itself rejected the storm. Then she saw him. A man—or something that looked like one—leaning against the brick wall. Tall. Broad shoulders. Dark hair plastered to his skin from the rain. His head was bowed, as if he was trying to hold himself together by force alone. “Hey…” Sierra stepped closer cautiously. “Are you hurt?” No answer. Then his head lifted. And everything in her went still. His eyes were not human. Gold—burning, alive, ancient. They locked onto hers like a chain snapping shut. Sierra should have run. She didn’t. Instead, she felt something pull in her chest—sharp, sudden, overwhelming. Like her body recognized him before her mind could understand why. The man inhaled sharply, almost like her scent hit him harder than the storm. “You shouldn’t be here,” he said. His voice was low. Rough. Controlled… barely. “Yeah?” Sierra tried to sound steady, but her pulse betrayed her. “Well, you’re in an alley looking like you just fought a hurricane. So maybe I should be the one saying that.” A flicker crossed his face. Amusement… or restraint. He pushed himself off the wall slowly. That’s when she saw it. A s***h across his side. Deep. Not bleeding like a normal wound—more like it was refusing to heal properly. Her instinct kicked in. “You’re injured.” “It will heal,” he said simply. “Right. Because that’s normal,” she muttered. A silence stretched between them. Heavy. Charged. Wrong. And yet… neither of them moved away. The air between them felt warmer now, despite the rain. Sierra hated how aware she was of him—every shift of his breath, every drop of water sliding down his skin, every inch of space she shouldn’t be crossing but was crossing anyway. He stepped closer. Just one step. But it changed everything. Her back hit the alley wall without her realizing she had moved. “You shouldn’t look at me like that,” he said quietly. “Like what?” she asked, breath uneven now. “Like you’re not afraid.” Sierra swallowed. “I don’t know if I am yet,” she admitted. That should have been a lie. It wasn’t. His gaze dropped briefly to her lips. A pause. Something dangerous passed between them—silent, instinctive, undeniable. Then, softer: “You’re not meant for this place.” “And where exactly is this place?” she asked. His eyes lifted back to hers. A beat of silence. Then— “Mine.” The word landed like thunder. Sierra’s breath caught, not because it made sense… but because some part of her reacted to it like it did. The moment stretched too long. Too close. Too charged. He leaned in slightly—not touching her, but close enough that she could feel the heat of him cutting through the cold rain. Her pulse quickened. Her body betrayed her thoughts. And just as she thought he might close the distance completely— A distant howl ripped through the night. The man froze instantly. Every trace of softness vanished from his face. Danger replaced everything. “They found me,” he muttered. Sierra blinked. “Who?” But he was already stepping back. “No,” she said quickly, surprising even herself. “Wait—what is going on?” His eyes met hers one last time. And for the first time— Something like conflict flickered there. “You were never supposed to see me,” he said. “Too late,” she shot back. A faint almost-smile touched his lips. Then it was gone. The wind surged. And in a blink—he was gone. Just gone. Only the rain remained. And Sierra Walker stood alone in a dripping alley, her heart racing, her skin burning where he had been too close… …and somewhere deep inside her chest, something had already started to answer him.
