Episode 4 (The Chase and the Fall)

1035 Words
The sharp afternoon sun beat down mercilessly on the busy streets of Capital Asia as Lin gripped the steering wheel, her eyes darting nervously between the road ahead and the side mirrors. The black SUV moved swiftly through the city’s maze, weaving past honking cars and bustling crowds. In the backseat, Zuri lay barely conscious, her bruised and battered body pressed against the cold leather. Adrian had slipped away moments ago, leaving the car and the weight of Zuri’s safety in Lin’s hands. His expression was unreadable as he disappeared into the towering glass building of the agency, blending into the crowd like a ghost. Lin glanced once more at the rearview mirror, heart pounding. Something wasn’t right. At first, she saw only the usual flow of city traffic. But then—a shadow. Another car, just a little too close behind. Then another. And another. Within moments, a convoy of sleek black sedans materialized, closing in relentlessly. “Damn it,” Lin muttered under her breath. She adjusted her grip, eyes narrowing. “They’re on us,” she whispered. Her voice was tight, but steady. Zuri’s faint breath hitched in the back, her body weak from the brutal fight they’d barely escaped. Lin’s mind raced. She couldn’t lose Zuri—not now. Not when the agency was hunting them like wolves. She tapped the radio. “Win, I need backup. Now. They’re closing in on us near the industrial district. I’m driving with the target, she’s badly injured. We need help, fast.” A crackled reply came through the static. “Copy that. ETA five minutes.” Lin cursed softly. Five minutes was an eternity when bullets could fly any second. The city’s concrete jungle turned into a labyrinth as Lin pushed the SUV to its limits, dodging trucks and sharp corners, using every alley and side street she knew. The black sedans kept pace, blocking escape routes with cold precision. The first shots rang out before they even hit the industrial zone. Glass shattered as bullets sprayed the driver’s side window. Lin swore under her breath, ducking instinctively but keeping her foot steady on the accelerator. Behind her, Zuri gasped—a fragile sound, her injuries deepening. Lin’s heart clenched. “Hold on, Zuri. We’re going to make it.” But the enemy was ruthless. Two operatives emerged from the shadows, guns raised, blocking their path. Lin slammed the brakes, the tires screeching, metal grinding against metal as one sedan rammed their rear bumper, jolting the car violently. Win arrived just as the SUV skidded to a stop, leaping from her own vehicle with cold efficiency, pistols drawn. “Lin! Status?” she shouted, ducking behind the open door. “They’re pinning us down! Zuri’s hurt bad. We can’t hold long!” Lin yelled back. Gunfire erupted, echoing through the empty warehouses and loading docks. The air was thick with smoke, the sharp scent of burning rubber and ozone biting at their lungs. Lin grabbed her pistol, firing blindly at advancing figures. Bullets tore through the SUV’s bodywork, some shattering glass, others grazing her arms. Adrenaline surged, but Lin’s focus never wavered. Her hands shook only slightly as she covered Win’s retreat and protected Zuri. Win’s shots were deadly and precise, felling one attacker after another. But the agency’s reinforcements were overwhelming, their numbers a brutal tidal wave. Suddenly, the SUV lurched forward as Lin slammed the accelerator again, smashing through a stack of crates to create distance. But the damage was done. Zuri’s body slumped sideways, her breath shallow and uneven. Lin’s heart dropped—her friend’s life was slipping away. Win shouted over the gunfire, “We need to move her! Now!” Lin didn’t hesitate. With trembling hands, she unbuckled Zuri’s seatbelt and carefully lifted her, cradling her fragile frame. Bullets ricocheted around them as they dashed to the backup vehicle Win had driven. They piled inside, doors slamming as Lin slammed the gas pedal. The SUV tore through the industrial maze toward the secret underground hospital—a place unknown to the agency, hidden beneath the city’s surface. Every second felt like a lifetime. Zuri’s face was pale, her breathing ragged. Lin whispered desperately, “Please hold on, Zuri. Please…” --- Inside the hospital, sterile white walls gleamed under cold fluorescent lights. Nurses moved silently, prepping medical equipment while Lin and Win guided Zuri onto a stretcher. The doctors worked fast—cleaning wounds, inserting IVs, monitoring vital signs. The harsh truth was clear: Zuri’s injuries were severe. Multiple internal traumas, significant blood loss. The doctors exchanged grave looks as they rushed her into surgery. Lin stood frozen, fists clenched, every muscle trembling. Win’s voice was a harsh whisper. “She’s stable for now, but if she wakes up—” Lin shook her head, unable to finish. Hours passed in agonizing silence. Lin sat alone in the dim waiting room, replaying every moment of the chase, the fight, the fear. Her mind was a tornado of emotions—rage at the agency’s betrayal, guilt for not being able to do more, and fierce determination to protect Zuri at all costs. The hospital’s intercom buzzed softly. A doctor approached, face grave. “She’s in a coma,” he said. “The trauma was severe. We’ll do everything we can.” Lin’s breath caught. She sank into a chair, head in her hands. --- Back at the agency’s glass tower, Adrian sat in the plush office, eyes staring blankly at his computer screen. To everyone watching, he was calm, composed, fully aligned with the agency’s mission. But inside, his mind churned. Orders had come down: Find Zuri, alive or dead. He didn’t lift a finger to help her. He didn’t call backup. He simply played his part perfectly, wearing a mask of loyalty and obedience.L No one suspected the battle raging beneath his calm exterior. For now, he was a ghost in the system—waiting, watching, biding his time. --- In the hospital’s dim room, Lin whispered softly to herself, “We’re not giving up on you, Zuri. Not now. Not ever.” Outside, the city moved on unaware, but a storm was gathering. The agency’s grip tightened.
