Chapter One Bet is a very small village,were education is only limited to the boys only.They believe boys will continue the lineage of the family, while the girls will be married off and end up in the kitchen. Girls are not given much opportunity to speak or have their own opinions,the people of Bet believe that a girl duty is to take care of her husband needs and that of her children.While the boys and men provides for the family.This mindset has been passed to one generation to another,no one has the courage to question that. They lived Kara ,a free spirited girl, intelligent, beautiful and determine.Kara was determine to change this mindset of her people,she always question their mindset and their reasoning.But to no avail because nobody is willing to answer her questions. Kara parents Mr and Mrs Dan supported Kara in her journey for a better tomorrow.Kara parents was so proud of her,that someone is finally going to question the mindset of the people of Bet village. Kara mom stood up,she stand beside the window has she narrated her story.When I was about your age Kara,I was very determine and focus just like you. My dream was to be educated and become a medical doctor,I had so much zeal and passion. My father never supported me ,his only concern was to marry me off ,she sighed. He believes that it is a waste of money and time in educating a female child,she said as tears roll down her cheek. My dream was cut off,my hope was lost ,my dream was shattered right in front of me and I could do nothing about it. I was never given a chance to express how I feel,as she wept bitterly. Marta,Kara childhood friend came visiting.Marta and Kara were best of friends in their early days, before Marta was married off by her parents, she was not happy with the marriage but still want ahead with it for the sake of her parent happiness.Marta dream was cut short. I have kids and a husband to take care of and beside my parent will disown me If I ever make that decision of going back to school,she said as tears cloud her eyes.Kara calm her down, marriage is not the end of the journey in life Marta. Marta,you have parent who are ready to move mountains for you Kara.Tears roll down her cheek. “I want to be educated.” “I want to have a voice” “I want to make impact” But nobody will support me, not my husband, not even my own parent.Am just an ordinary house wife ,who is meant to take care of her kids and husband.Am helpless Kara,she said has she could not control her tears ,has they rushed down her cheek. Don’t say that, you are the most amazing person I have ever come across. I feel your pain , but the world or neither the people of Bet will understand what you have to pass through.Why , because you are a female child who will have to tolerate and sacrifice her dream for everyone else,has she tried so hard to control her tears. “A female child has dream too” “A female child has the right to be educated” “A female child should have a voice” Kara said with pain in her eyes, Marta goes close to Kara to comfort her.she said I was deny the right to education but I will make sure I give both my male and female child a right to education.
