Chapter 3: First mission completed

The wind whistled softly through the broken windows, carrying with it the musty smell of rotten wood and rusty iron. Outside, the faint morning sunlight penetrated through the gray clouds, covering the deserted streets with a strange beauty, both quiet and deadly. But it still couldn't hide the faint smell of blood that permeated the entire city. Liam opened his eyes and stretched, feeling numb after a night of sleeping on the cold floor. He had survived the first night. Lena and Mike were sitting with their backs against the wall, occasionally glancing out the window to check the situation outside. The two of them heard a noise from Liam's direction and turned their heads. When Mike saw that Liam was awake, he stood up and put on his leather jacket, saying, "Okay, let's hurry before it gets dark. Maybe we should walk instead of driving to avoid alerting the zombies." With that, Mike picked up the axe in the corner of the house. Lena checked her pistol again. Liam also tidied up his clothes and grabbed the iron bar for self-defense, he took a deep breath to calm down. Mike looked outside through a small hole in the door before lifting the large iron bar blocking the door. He carefully pushed the door open so as not to make any noise. The three of them quickly left the house and entered the alley opposite. Mike raised his right hand to open the Map, 900m away there was a supermarket. “Okay, let's go,” Mike said while glancing at the surrounding streets. “Wait, don't take the main road. I looked at the map carefully last night, I know the shortcut to that supermarket. There will probably be less zombies.” Liam raised his hand to stop Mike and said. Last night he took the opportunity to carefully study the Map in this system, although there were still some questions, at least he had grasped the way around the city. Lena and Mike frowned and looked at Liam with suspicious eyes. But in the end they decided to listen to him. The group carefully crossed the ruined streets, following the alleys to avoid detection. All around, the abandoned buildings were like bare skeletons, with broken windows, and overturned cars in the middle of the street. The air was filled with the stench and mold of a dead city. Liam led the way, his hand tightly gripping the iron bar, his eyes constantly moving to observe. Lena followed closely, her pistol loaded. Mike walked at the back, clutching the axe in his hand. Suddenly Liam stopped and raised his hand to press the two people behind him against the alley wall. When Lena was about to ask a question, she saw a group of zombies moving at the head of the alley. They walked slowly, their gait strangely swaying. Liam and his group held their breath and pressed themselves against the alley wall, hiding in the shade of the building next door. The zombies made hoarse noises. Liam noticed that the zombies seemed to be slower during the day than at night. As soon as the zombies passed through the alley, the group immediately moved out of there and continued to hide behind an old car nearby. When Mike - the last person to hide behind the car, a zombie in the group suddenly turned around. Its face was half crushed in horror, its mouth was torn open, revealing rotten flesh. It growled and then dragged its feet away with the other zombies. Liam breathed a sigh of relief. Mike whispered, his voice tense: "Are we almost there yet?" “Almost there, just around the corner.” Liam answered softly. They continued to move, holding their breaths every time they heard the slightest noise. When they got close to the supermarket, the group immediately retreated into a corner because they saw a group of zombies standing in front of the entrance. They stood still, like broken machines. A few of them groaned softly, their mouths full of dried blood moving constantly. Lena lowered her voice, her eyes scanning the area: "There's an emergency exit on the side, but I'm afraid it's stuck. I'll shoot across the street to attract the zombies, you two hurry up and open the door." Liam and Mike nodded, their hearts pounding, they were ready to rush to the emergency exit. Lena squinted and aimed at a shop across the street. She immediately fired her gun straight at the glass door, causing it to shatter, and create a loud sound. The sleeping zombies were immediately stimulated and rushed crazily toward the shop across the street. Liam and Mike immediately ran like the wind, their steps as light as cats. A minute that felt like a century passed, and when they reached the emergency exit, the two of them hurriedly used force to push the door. Due to not being used for a long time, the hinges were rusty and difficult to open. Fear made them rush. Lena feared the zombies would discover them, so she continued to shoot at the neighboring stores. They became more frantic and screamed. “Hey.” Liam looked at Lena and said just loud enough to be heard. She nodded and put away her gun, rushing towards the exit. The group squeezed in and carefully closed the door. It was dark inside. The shelves were in disarray, items were scattered everywhere. There were long, scary red blood stains on the floor and walls. “Hurry, we need to split up and take what we can carry,” Lena said. “Be careful, there might still be zombies in here.” Liam reminded. The group immediately split up. They carefully watched the road and moved slowly so as not to make any noise. Mike found some intact water bottles. Lena collected first aid supplies such as medical bandages, hydrogen peroxide, hemostatic tape, and some medicines. As for Liam, he walked towards the Canned Food aisle, he held the iron bar tightly in his hand and gradually tilted his head to look inside the shelf. There was no one. Liam quickly picked up the usable canned goods that were rolling around on the floor. He raised his right hand and opened the Inventory, the Inventory status screen appeared, and the food boxes were immediately sucked in. When Liam was bending down to pick up more tuna meat boxes, he saw a figure approaching from behind him. Was it Lena and Mike? GRHHH BANG! Liam turned around and slammed the iron bar into the head of the zombie that was trying to sneak attack him from behind. Liam realized that the figure was not human. Fearing that the zombie had not been defeated, he quickly pulled the iron bar out of its head and used all his strength to stab it once more into the top of its head. Black blood splattered everywhere. The zombie's screams gradually weakened. Its body fell backward towards the shelves, creating a Domino effect that caused a series of shelves behind it to fall. The loud noise caused Lena and Mike to immediately run over. "What's going on, Liam?" "It's a zombie, it wants to sneak attack me." Liam had just finished speaking when his system status panel suddenly appeared. At the same time, the system voice rang out.
