Painful Memories
“Stop!”, Mrs. Devi said as she pulled her son away from Charlotte. “When are you going to realize that you brought an evil maid to our house?", Michael said to his mother angrily. “She’s a human and she deserves to be treated like one”, she said as she walked to Charlotte, who was slightly bleeding from her elbow. “Look what you’ve done Michael”, she said as she rushed to get the first aid kit. “I hate you”, he said to Charlotte before he went outside. She fell on the floor and cried. “If only my parents were alive”, she cried. ~~~~~~ The weather was cold. Michael was still laying on the bed with his girlfriend Quinn. “Baby I’m hungry”, she said pulling him closer to her. “Let’s wash our mouth first, come on”, he said as he came down from the bed and carried her, bridal style into the bathroom. He placed her gently on her feet and collected their toothbrushes and paste. He brushed her teeth while she brushed his teeth. They laughed and teased each other. He held her hand as they walked down the stairs to the kitchen. “What do you want to eat baby?”, he kissed her forehead. “I think I want fried chicken and tea”, she squealed. “Consider it done”, he opened the kitchen door and saw Charlotte preparing toast bread with fried eggs and hot chocolate. “What are you doing?”, he straightened his voice. “I’m making breakfast”, she said, still cooking. “When I’m talking to you, you must look at me”, he said as he grabbed her throat making her drop the knife she was holding on the floor. “Please”, she begged for her life. “Baby don’t waste your time trying to kill her, she’ll obviously die herself, I mean look at how poor and miserable she is”, Quinn said rolling her eyes. She walked past them and took a bottle of warm water and emptied it on Charlotte’s head. Charlotte cried bitterly. “You’re amazing baby”, he pulled Quinn into his arms and kissed her. She held his neck and pinned her body to his as she moaned gently against his lips. She turned to Charlotte who was already soaked with water. “As for you, I want to eat fried chicken, make sure you serve it with tea”, she turned. Michael placed his hand on her waist as they left the kitchen. Charlotte felt completely humiliated. She ran upstairs to change her clothes Breakfast had been served and everyone had finished eating. Charlotte was in her room sitting on the bed. The room was Mrs. Devi’s old room. She moved out of the room when her husband passed away 2 years ago. The room gave her a lot of memories, so she gave the room to Charlotte. It was a good change for her though. She finally left her old room which was formerly a*****e for keeping cleaning items. Michael had insisted that she remained in that room but his mom had compassion on her. She was 17 years old when she started living with the Stanley’s. Mr. Ben Stanley had the same character with his son. They hated her but Mrs. Devi wasn’t like that at all, she was always trying to defend her and make her feel comfortable. It was very difficult to do that even when her husband was dead. She has lived with them for 7 years now. Charlotte’s parents had owed Mr. Stanley a huge amount of money. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to pay back, so he ordered them to release their daughter as a maid to them, to work for 8 years to pay her parents debt, while he had her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walker, killed. Charlotte’s younger brother, Kelvin, was very lucky to have escaped the night the soldiers came to kill them. Rumor has it that he left the city to a far away place nobody knew. Not even his best of friends knew where he was. Tears rolled down her eyes as she thought of that night. She was never going to forgive the Stanleys and she had made up her mind. She cried bitterly with her head buried into her pillow. She went to her bathroom and washed her face. She went downstairs to get a bottle of water. “Why are you less busy?”, She turned to the voice. It was Michael. “I have nothing else to do”, She replied. “Were you crying?... it’s not like I care though”, he said as he brushed past her. She had anger issues and she knew it. When she was 7, she strangled a man to death, which added to the bill her parents owed, not only the Stanleys but there were others too. According to her explanation, the man was insulting her parents and he laughed at how poor they were because she couldn’t afford a new shoe for school. It was painful. Her mom managed to get her the cheapest anger management class there was. Since then, she had learnt to control herself a bit. Michael was pushing her to an extent he wouldn’t like to see. She had always thought of poisoning his food but then she would realize that the whole city would come for her even is she ran away. There was nowhere to run to either. She took a deep breath and walked downstairs. “You’ve not been treating Charlotte very nice”, Mrs. Devi said to Quinn. They sat down in the sitting room, facing each other, 2 glasses of champagne on the small glass table with a plate of pringles.
