The Contract Marriage
Storm clouds gathered above Wolfe Industries, casting shadows against the glass walls like a silent omen waiting to unfold. High above the city, the executive floor lay isolated, far removed from the distant lights and noise below. Elena Vale stood quietly inside the elevator, her reflection in the polished steel doors looking like the ghost of the woman she once was. She steadied herself, clutching the folder tightly against her chest. The building was nearly empty at this hour. The usual chatter of ambitious executives, the clicking of expensive heels, and the hurried whispers of assistants had long faded into the night. Only the pale lights of the lobby reflected against the dark marble floors below. As the elevator slowly ascended, Elena watched the glowing numbers above the door climb steadily. Thirty-nine. Forty. Forty-one. Each floor felt like another step away from safety and closer to something unavoidable. She had worked at Wolfe Industries for almost a year as a junior secretary—one unnoticed face among thousands of employees. Elena had mastered the art of remaining invisible, blending into endless rows of cubicles and the constant hum of printers and ringing telephones. But she had never once stepped onto the executive floor this late at night. That level belonged to a different world. A world of billion-dollar decisions, ruthless competition, and silent fear, all revolving around one man employees barely dared to look in the eye. Adrian Wolfe. The youngest billionaire CEO in the country’s history. A man whose reputation for cruelty was matched only by his brilliance for destruction. The elevator chimed softly, the sound unnaturally loud in the heavy silence, and the doors slid open. The executive hallway stretched before her like a cavern of shadows. At the far end stood a pair of towering black doors. Behind them lay the heart of the empire. Elena hesitated. Every instinct inside her screamed at her to turn around, to run back to the elevator and disappear before it was too late. But the image of her mother lying weak and fragile in a hospital bed forced her forward. The medical reports had arrived earlier that morning, along with another crushing bill. Elena had stared at the numbers until her eyes burned, trying to understand how something as small as her salary could possibly fight something as merciless as death. Another surgery. Another impossible payment. And a healthcare system that showed little mercy to people already drowning in pain. Then the email had arrived. Short. Cold. Direct. Mr. Wolfe would like to see you tonight. Elena stopped in front of the massive doors and raised a trembling hand. She knocked twice. “Come in,” a deep voice answered from inside. The office was enormous and shadowed in low light, illuminated only by the golden glow of the city beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows. Adrian Wolfe stood beside the glass wall with his back facing her, one hand tucked into his pocket. Even without seeing his face, Elena could feel the pressure of his presence filling the room. He was tall and powerfully built, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit that screamed wealth and authority. The silence stretched painfully as he deliberately kept her standing there, nervous and exposed beneath his gaze. “You’re late, Miss Vale,” he said calmly. Elena swallowed hard. “I came immediately after I received your message, sir.” A few seconds later, he finally turned around. His eyes were cold and unreadable, darker than the storm clouds hanging over the city. There was no warmth in them—only calculation. His gaze swept over her slowly, examining her as though she were a file to be reviewed rather than a human being. Without another word, he motioned toward the chair in front of his desk. “Sit.” Elena obeyed quietly, lowering herself into the leather seat while trying to steady her breathing. Adrian moved with controlled elegance around the office, silent and composed like a predator circling its prey. He opened a drawer, removed a stack of neatly arranged documents, and slid them across the desk toward her. Her eyes dropped to the papers. Legal documents. Confusion tightened in her chest. “I’m sure you’re wondering why I called you here tonight,” Adrian said, leaning back slightly in his chair. “Yes, sir.” “I know about your mother.” The statement struck Elena instantly. Her fingers curled against the armrest. “Stage three heart disease. Two surgeries already completed. Another procedure scheduled next month.” His voice remained emotionless. “And according to the hospital, you have three weeks left to complete the payment before she’s transferred out of special care.” The room suddenly felt too small. Elena stared at him in disbelief, her thoughts spinning wildly. How could he possibly know all that? Adrian tapped his fingers lightly against the desk. “I can take care of the expenses.” Elena blinked. “What?” “I’ll cover every medical bill,” he continued smoothly. “The surgery. The medications. The specialists. Everything your mother needs.” Hope rose sharply inside her chest, sudden and dangerous. “You’d really do that?” she whispered. “Yes,” he replied. “But nothing comes without a price, Miss Vale.” Elena’s heartbeat quickened. “What do you want from me?” Adrian leaned forward slightly, the city lights casting shadows across his sharp features. “I want you to marry me.” The words knocked the air from her lungs. “What?” “A contract marriage,” he clarified coldly. “One year. You will live with me, attend public events beside me, and act as my wife in front of the media and the public.” Elena stared at him as if she had heard wrong. “You can’t be serious.” “I don’t make jokes about business arrangements,” Adrian replied. “The board believes I’m unstable and too detached to lead this company alone. A marriage improves my image.” His eyes narrowed slightly. “You are ideal for the role. You’re unknown, disciplined, and you have nothing in your background that could threaten my reputation.” Elena looked down at the contract again. Marriage Agreement. One year. It felt unreal. Like her life had suddenly become a transaction written in black ink. “And after one year?” she asked quietly. “We divorce,” Adrian answered. “Your mother receives proper treatment, you get financial compensation, and both of us move on with our lives.” Elena’s chest tightened painfully. She thought about the hospital monitors, the unpaid bills stacked in her apartment, and her mother lying weakly in that hospital bed. “Why me?” she finally asked. “There are women far more suitable than I am.” Adrian’s expression darkened. “Because you have something to lose,” he said softly. “That makes you predictable. Loyal.” The meaning behind his words settled heavily in the room. He wasn’t offering her salvation. He was securing control. Elena slowly picked up the pen resting beside the contract. Her hands trembled slightly as she stared at the signature line before her. Signing it felt less like accepting a proposal and more like surrendering her freedom. “Once you sign,” Adrian said quietly, “there’s no turning back.” Elena released a shaky breath and pressed the pen against the paper. Her signature appeared slowly beneath the contract. Adrian took the documents immediately and closed the folder with a firm snap. “Good,” he said as he stood. “The arrangement begins today.” Elena rose unsteadily from the chair. Her legs felt weak beneath her. She turned toward the door, desperate to escape the suffocating atmosphere of the office. But Adrian’s voice stopped her. “One more thing… Mrs. Wolfe.” The title sent chills down her spine. She turned back slowly. Adrian was watching her with a faint smile that never reached his eyes. “You should prepare yourself,” he said. “For what?” “For the consequences of standing beside me.” His voice was low and calm. “Power creates enemies, Elena. And from today onward, their attention will be on you too.” Elena left the office in silence, the invisible weight of the contract already settling heavily on her shoulders.
