The strange dream
Hazel woke up with a loud gasp. Her heart was beating so hard that she had to press a hand against her chest. She had that dream again, or was it a nightmare? She didn't know. She didn't even know the man, yet somehow, she had been seeing him for years. He was always standing in the middle of a bloody battlefield. His clothes were covered in blood, his long silver hair was messy, and his eyes always looked so cold. But this time was different. He turned around and looked directly at her. Damn! He was like one of the Greek gods! Hazel had never seen such a handsome face in her life. And just before she woke up, his lips moved as if he wanted to tell her something. Then she heard him call her name. "Hazel...” She still didn't understand how or why she kept finding herself in those dreams. Well, whatever. She quickly got out of bed and walked into the bathroom. She turned on the tap and splashed cold water over her face. She slowly raised her head and looked into the mirror. Her pale face looked tired. Her long black hair was a complete mess, and there were dark circles under her eyes. Hazel stared at her reflection for a few seconds before quickly closing her eyes. “Please,” she whispered. She didn't even know who she was talking to. Maybe the Moon Goddess or maybe herself. “Please let tonight be different.” Tonight was the full moon and also her last hope. She dropped to her knees beside her bed and folded her hands. “Moon Goddess, please let my wolf come out tonight.” She had prayed that prayer so many times that she had almost stopped believing in it. But tonight was different. Tonight was her third Awakening Night. Most werewolves awakened their wolves at eighteen. Some awakened a little later. They were called late bloomers and usually awakened during their nineteenth year or shortly after their second Awakening Night. But threw years was almost unheard of her. She was twenty one! And she was still wolf-less. The first daughter of the Great Alpha of Blackwood Pack, for goodness sake. Her father ruled one of the strongest packs in the werewolf world, with powerful Beta and Gamma under his command. Her mother also came from an ancient and powerful bloodline. Their union had been considered one of the strongest pairings in werewolf history. Two powerful bloodlines had joined together. Everyone believed their first child would be extraordinary. And that child was Hazel: the first daughter and the first child born from both powerful families. They expected a monster of strength from her. A future Alpha Queen! Or a female werewolf so powerful that other packs would fear her name. This was one of the reason why her mate were afraid to bully her in school, till she graduated. Afraid she will get back at them once she turned eighteen. Instead... They believed Hazel was born without a wolf. When she turned eighteen, everyone waited for the moment they had been expecting. But she failed them. They called her a late bloomer. They believed the strength from both bloodlines was too much for her body to handle and decided to give her another year. At nineteen, everyone waited again, and she failed them again. Now she was twenty- one and they had stopped waiting. At first, people had been respectful. Then curious, worried, disappointed!! Now they laughed whenever she approached. Some called her a human. Others said she was cursed. But the worst insult was calling her lazy. In the werewolf world, weakness was considered one of the greatest sins. Werewolves were hunters. The greatest warriors among the supernatural races. Also leaders! They were supposed to be strong. So if the Alpha King's daughter couldn't even shift, what did that make her? A disappointment to the entire pack and wolf races. Hazel's younger sister, Emily, had awakened at eighteen like a normal werewolf. She was strong, beautiful, and fearless. She had even become the first female heir in their pack to lead a war. People loved her for it. They compared the sisters all the time... especially in school... “Why can't Hazel be more like Emily?” “Maybe Emily should have been the first daughter.” “Imagine having no wolf at twenty-one.... damn! I wish I could turn back the time so I can beat her in school” Hazel heard everything but pretended not to. ..... The moment she stepped out of her bedroom, a familiar voice greeted her. “Hey, Hazel....top student of the year....You good?” Ryan stood in the hallway with his usual grin on his face. He reached out and ruffled her hair the way he always did, he couldn't stop praising her ever since she made it to the top student of Ichor Academy. “Why do you look like you just saw a ghost?” He leaned closer and lowered his voice. “Can you talk about it here?” Hazel managed a small laugh and shook her head. Ryan was always Ryan. He understood her better than anyone. While others called her human behind her back, he never joined them. He shut them down every time. He was the son the Beta under her father's command. Many Alpha daughters wanted him as their mate. Hazel couldn't blame them. He was handsome, strong, kind, and annoyingly protective! And she liked him too. Maybe more than she should. They walked through the pack house until they reached their usual flower garden. The Blackwood Pack had many gardens, but this one belonged to them. It was hidden behind the pack house, surrounded by tall trees and colourful flowers. Nobody came here unless they knew about it. Ryan sat on the wooden bench and looked at her seriously. “Was it the same dream?” Hazel sighed, sat beside him, and rested her head on his shoulder. She felt tired all the way to her bones. “Yes. It's getting worse. At first, it only came once in a while. Now it's almost every night...” Ryan was quiet for a long moment. “When did the dreams start again?” Hazel rolled her eyes and leaned heavier against him. “When I turned eighteen!!” Two years ago. The same night the whole pack had expected her wolf to appear. Ryan remained quiet. He was the only person who knew about her dreams. How could she explain that every time she closed her eyes, she saw a man standing in a battlefield covered in blood? Tonight mattered a lot, so their packs, but for her, it felt like a final test she had already failed twice....
