Chapter 1- Prologue
--- Kate Williams, a 7-year-old girl, called out, "Mom, it's 6:45 AM already! You know the school bus will soon be around." Mrs. Williams, walking toward her daughter, smiled. "Are you set?" "Yes, Mom," Kate replied as they both walked to the door. "Where is your lunch bag?" her mom asked. "Oh, my lunchbox is on the dining table!" Kate grinned and hurried to grab it. As they walked down the street to her mom’s restaurant, Kate suddenly remembered something. "Mom, Father's Day is coming soon!" Mrs. Williams' expression changed as she got lost in thought. "Mom, did you hear me?" Kate asked. "Oh… ah, yes," Mrs. Williams said, forcing a smile. "So, is Daddy coming? You know you promised me last year that he would be back." Mrs. Williams sighed. "Yeah, I remember. He is coming." "When?" Kate asked excitedly. Mrs. Williams hesitated, then said in a firm tone, "Enough of this question, your bus is waiting." As they reached the front of the bus, Kate waved at her mom. "Bye, Mom!" "Bye, dear," her mom replied, forcing another smile as she watched her daughter board the bus. --- Flashback: Four Years Ago Mr. William James was driving home in his Toyota Camry after work when his phone rang. It was his wife. "Hey, honey," he answered. "Hey, sweetheart. Are you coming home?" she asked. "Yes, baby," he replied. "Our girl is still a crying baby," Mrs. Williams teased. They both laughed. Suddenly, a speeding Lexus 350 ran a red light and crashed into Mr. Williams’ car. The line went silent. "Hello, baby? Hello?" Mrs. Williams kept calling, but there was no response. She rushed outside with her daughter, panic setting in. She quickly handed Kate over to her neighbor, Clara, a 32-year-old woman. "Clara, please keep her safe till morning," she pleaded. Clara nodded. "Okay." --- Mrs. Williams didn’t know where she was heading, but she found herself taking the usual route her husband followed home. Minutes later, she realized he had been rushed to the hospital. When she arrived, doctors were already attending to him. The other driver had died on the spot. She stood frozen, tears rolling down her cheeks. A doctor, Mr. Orwell, walked up to her. "Are you Mrs. Williams?" "Yes," she said, her voice shaky. "What happened to my husband?" "Ma’am… your husband is requesting to see you." She rushed inside and saw her husband lying on the hospital bed, struggling to breathe. "Babe!" she cried. "You know I love you so much," he whispered weakly. "I know… I know…" she sobbed. "Take care of our child," he said with his last strength. She hugged him tightly, but his hands went limp. He was gone. Mrs. Williams screamed and cried. "Ella! Ella!" Clara's voice snapped her back to reality. "Yes, dear?" Mrs. Williams wiped her tears. "Where is your mind? I've been calling you," Clara said, concerned. "I'm thinking of him... Father's Day is coming soon, and I don’t want to fake a promise again," Mrs. Williams whispered. Mrs. Williams stood behind the counter, absentmindedly wiping a clean glass. The restaurant buzzed with customers, but her mind was elsewhere. Clara, who had been watching her, walked over and leaned against the counter. "What about the blind date I informed you to go for?" she asked. Mrs. Williams sighed, placing the glass down. " I don't want to do that". Clara shook her head." Go for it, Ella. At least she didn't know her dad, so she will accept him as her dad. And just like that, your problem is solved - no more fake promises." Mrs. Williams looked away, her hands trembling slightly." I don't want to do that ," she repeated, her voice softer this time. " I know", Clara said gently. " But think of your daughter." Mrs. Williams closed her eyes for a moment, taking a deep breath. Finally, she nodded slightly. " Okay...... I will think about it". Clara smiled, patting her friend's hand. " That's a start". --- At School Mrs. Glory, their teacher, stood in front of the class, writing on the board. "Today, we will be learning about three-syllable words," she announced. Michael raised his hand first. "Teleport!" he said confidently. "Good job!" Mrs. Glory praised him. Bella followed. "Telephone!" "Well done, Bella!" the teacher nodded. Then she turned to Kate. "What about you?" Kate stood up proudly. "Widow!" The class burst into laughter. Kate, confused, spelled it out. "Wi-d-ow. Aunty is a widow." Silence filled the classroom. Mrs. Glory's expression changed. The word hit her like a wave—because she was truly a widow. She took a deep breath and forced a smile. "Kids will always be kids," she muttered before walking out of the class, her heart heavy. --- At Home Kate arrived at her mom’s restaurant, jumping off the bus. She ran inside, shouting in excitement, "MOM IS A WIDOW!" The restaurant went silent. Mrs. Williams’ hands trembled as she turned to face her daughter. Kate, still unaware of the weight of her words, grinned. "I said it in school today, and everyone was surprised!" Tears welled up in her mother’s eyes, but she quickly wiped them away. "Kate, come here," she said softly. Kate walked over, confused. Mrs. Williams knelt down to her daughter's level and held her hands. "Sweetheart, do you know what 'widow' means?" Kate hesitated. "A woman?" Mrs. Williams sighed, smiling through the pain. "Not just any woman, my love. A widow is someone whose husband is no longer with her." Kate’s smile faded as realization hit her. "You mean… Daddy?" she whispered. Mrs. Williams hesitated, her heart pounding. Then, forcing a smile, she gently cupped Kate’s cheeks. "No, sweetheart, nothing happened to your dad. Your dad is coming," she said. Kate’s eyes brightened. "Really, Mom?" "Yes, really," Mrs. Williams replied, hoping her voice didn’t betray her emotions. "Okay!" Kate grinned, her excitement returning. Mrs. Williams stood up and grabbed a small bag from the chair. "Go and change, your clothes are in the bag." Kate took it and ran toward her room. Mrs. Williams exhaled heavily, pressing her fingers against her temples. She had finally accepted the truth in her mind—she had to go for the blind date.
