Chapter 1: Beginning of ending
It all began with a simple "hello" and ended with two devastating words: "hindi na kita mahal." Kai and Mae, high school sweethearts, appeared to be a perfect match despite their differences—Kai was the quiet, mysterious type, while Mae, a social butterfly, illuminated every room she entered. From the moment Mae laid eyes on Kai, she was captivated. She showered him with gifts, poured her heart into handwritten letters, and dedicated every poem she wrote to him. Her feelings were raw and new, unlike anything she had ever felt before. But while Mae’s affection blossomed, Kai met her love with indifference. He dismissed her advances, brushed off her heartfelt gestures, and at times, even wounded her with his harsh words. Still, Mae remained undeterred. People called her desperate, shameless for chasing after a boy who seemed to want nothing to do with her. Yet she held on, not because she was stubborn, but because she believed in the love she felt—however painful it was. Slowly, Kai began to soften, returning her affection in small ways. Their classmates teased them, their teachers saw the spark, and just before the year came to a close, they finally became a couple. For a while, it was like a dream come true. Mae felt like the luckiest girl alive, her heart bursting with joy whenever Kai laughed or reached for her hand. They shared countless memories—stolen kisses in the hallway, whispered secrets, and promises made under the moonlight. But as time went on, the laughter faded, and the promises grew thin. Kai began to forget small things at first, like their month-saries or little dates that meant the world to Mae. She told herself it was no big deal, forgiving him because, deep down, she loved him too much to let go over something so trivial. But the disappointments kept piling up, like silent raindrops slowly drowning her spirit. Mae planned every date, put in all the effort, while Kai seemed content to let her carry the weight of their relationship. She had once thought that her love was enough for both of them, but as Kai drifted further away, she began to lose herself in the process. She couldn't remember the last time he surprised her or the last time he made her feel like she was the most important person in his world. She had given him everything—every ounce of her love, every piece of her soul—until she had nothing left for herself. One night, as she lay in bed replaying their memories, Mae felt a suffocating ache in her chest. She had poured so much of herself into loving Kai that she had forgotten how to love herself. She wanted him to try, to fight for what they had, to prove that she wasn’t the only one who cared. But all she heard from him was silence. And when she finally confronted him, when she asked for more than the bare minimum, Kai's response shattered whatever hope she had left. He admitted that he had grown distant, that her love had become too overwhelming. Mae had loved Kai with a kind of intensity that could move mountains, but it was not enough to move him. And so, with a broken heart and tear-stained cheeks, Mae had to face the truth that their love story was never meant to have a happy ending. She had lost herself loving someone who could not love her back in the same way. The two words Kai spoke echoed in her mind long after he was gone—"hindi na kita mahal." Mae was left standing there, holding the pieces of a love that had once been everything, now reduced to nothing. --- Mae and Kai had a terrible fight the night before, the kind of fight that left a silence hanging between them, where neither reached out to the other when the morning came. But as the night deepened, a message appeared on Mae’s phone, making her heart skip a beat. “Love, nasa bahay ka?” Kai asked, his tone filled with uncertainty. “Oo, nanonood, bakit?” Mae replied cautiously, her heart pounding. “Puntahan kita, may bibigay ako,” Kai said, his words carrying an air of promise. Mae hesitated, concern creeping into her voice. “Love, alas nueve na ng gabi. Bukas mo na lang dalhin.” “Aalis kami, wifey. Baka next month pa balik namin,” Kai responded. A pang of anxiety gripped Mae’s chest. “Anong oras na kase, love? Baka mapano ka sa daan.” “No, mag-iingat naman ako,” Kai assured her, but Mae could hear the distance in his voice. “Hay, Kai, ikaw bahala,” she said with a sigh, trying to mask her worry. “Ok, iloveyou. See you, love.” “Take care, ok? Iloveyoumost.” Mae stood outside her house, waiting, her worry growing with each passing minute. The rain began to pour heavily, mirroring her anxiety. She knew Kai never carried an umbrella. Determined to find him, she decided to meet him halfway, heading towards their school, a place she thought he might be waiting for the rain to ease up. But he wasn’t there. Her heart raced faster with each drop of rain soaking her clothes. She messaged Kai’s sister and cousin, asking if he had made it home, but they hadn’t seen him either. Desperate, Mae returned home, only to find a figure standing in the dim light outside her house. It was Kai. Relief and anger collided inside her as she ran to him, her voice trembling. “Sabi ko naman sa’yo wag ka nang pumunta e. Hindi ka pa talaga nagdala ng payong, Kai!” Kai simply smiled, pulling her into a tight embrace. “Hay, baby, I’m fine. Ansarap kaya maligo sa ulan.” Mae pulled back, glaring at him. “Nakakainis ka.” Kai chuckled, trying to lighten the mood. “Inggit ka lang kasi nakaligo ako sa ulan.” Despite herself, Mae couldn’t help but laugh with him, but the tension still lingered. “Galing ako sa school, kala ko dun ka magpapatila ng ulan.” “Sabi ko naman sa’yo pupunta ako sa bahay mo. Dumaan muna ako kila Matt, iniwan ko cellphone ko,” Kai explained, pulling a slightly crumpled bag from behind his back. He handed her a bottle of her favorite drink and a bar of chocolate. Mae’s heart melted as warmth spread through her chest. “Thank you, love.” “Anything for my MaeMae,” he said softly, leaning in to kiss her forehead. Then, Kai reached into his pocket, and Mae’s breath caught in her throat as he took out a small ring and gently slipped it onto her finger. His voice was barely a whisper, yet it was filled with a promise that echoed through the cold night. “Pag-uwi ko, aayusin ko lahat. Babawi ako sa lahat, love. Hintayin mo kong makauwi ha.” Tears welled up in Mae’s eyes, spilling down her cheeks as she nodded. She wasn’t sure if it was the rain or the depth of her love for him that made it hard to breathe. Kai’s hand reached up to wipe away her tears, his touch warm against her cold skin. He kissed her forehead again, as if sealing a vow. “Iloveyou, Mae,” he whispered, his voice trembling with emotion. “Iloveyousomuch that I couldn’t afford to lose you.” Mae’s lips curved into a small, tearful smile. In that moment, despite everything, she believed she was the luckiest girl in the world—lucky to have someone who, even in their messiness, could make her feel like the most precious thing in his life. Yet, beneath her smile, there was a flicker of fear. Because sometimes, even promises made in the rain could wash away, just like that night’s tears. The air became cold, and an uneasy stillness settled over the street. Mae's breath hung in the air, misting in front of her as she gazed at the ring Kai had placed on her finger. She shivered, but not just from the cold—it was as if the chill was seeping into her bones, a quiet forewarning of what was to come. Kai stood close, his warmth cutting through the icy air, but Mae couldn’t shake the feeling that something was slipping away. The night had become a blur of raindrops, laughter, and tears, yet now, standing here, she felt a strange emptiness. She glanced at Kai with sad eyes, who seemed lost in thought, his smile fading slightly as he looked past her, as though already a part of him was somewhere else—somewhere far beyond their small world of promises and whispered I love yous. Mae tightened her grip on Kai’s hand, trying to hold onto the moment, trying to capture the warmth before it was gone. “You’ll really come back, won’t you? We will really fix this, right?” Her voice cracked, betraying the fear she desperately wanted to hide. Kai's eyes met hers, and for a second, there was a flicker of hesitation—something that made Mae’s heart falter. But he quickly nodded, his smile returning, though it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Of course, I will. I promised, didn’t I? Once I come back, we will fix everything, baby. Don’t overthink too much.” He squeezed her hand reassuringly and kissed her forehead. Mae forced a Here’s the continuation of the story, deepening the emotional exchange and focusing on Mae's pain as she realizes the fragility of their relationship
