Lila had always felt different from the others in her village. While the villagers feared the dark and mysterious elder grove forest, Lila felt a deep, inexplicable connection to it. On most days, she would steal away from her family’s fields, sneaking toward the woods where she could sit by the edge and listen to the wind weave through the ancient trees.

But the forest had begun to change.

Strange occurrences had unsettled the village: the disappearance of livestock, sudden wilting of crops, and a growing sense of unease. Rumours spread about a figure seen at the edge of the woods—a shadow that seemed to blend into the trees and watch the village with unseen eyes.

One night, as Lila lay in bed, she felt a sharp tug in her chest, as though something deep within the forest was calling her. It was more than a feeling—an irresistible pull. She closed her eyes and saw it: the forest, wrapped in mist, with an ancient oak at the centre. Beneath its roots, something glowed—a feather, shimmering with power.

Lila’s eyes snapped open. She knew what she had to do.

Slipping out of bed, she grabbed her cloak and made her way outside. The village was quiet, the air thick with tension. She made her way to the forest's edge, her heart pounding in rhythm with the night’s pulse. She hesitated for a moment, but the forest called again, stronger this time. She stepped past the boundary, feeling the world shift around her.

Inside, the forest was alive, humming with magic and mystery. As she ventured deeper, a sense of familiarity washed over her, as though she had been here before in another life. The trees whispered in a language she couldn't understand, but the message was clear: keep going.

Chapter 1: A Call from the Forest Lila had always felt different from the others in her village. Chapter 2: Into the Unknown Lila walked for what felt like hours, the path winding deeper into the forest, the trees growing taller and more imposing with each step. The air grew cooler, and the ground beneath her feet felt softer, covered in moss and fallen leaves. Suddenly, a small creature darted across her path. It was no bigger than a squirrel, with soft blue fur and wings that shimmered like dragonfly wings. It stopped and looked at her, its large eyes full of curiosity. “Who are you?” the creature asked, its voice high-pitched and melodic. Lila blinked in surprise. “I... I’m Lila. Who are you?” The creature tilted its head, as if considering her question. “I’m Piri. And you’re not supposed to be here.” Lila frowned. “I think I am. The forest called me.” Piri's eyes widened. “The forest doesn’t call just anyone. You must be important.” Lila shook her head. “I don’t think I’m important.” Piri flitted closer, its wings buzzing softly. “If the forest called you, then it has chosen you for something. Come, I’ll take you to the heart of the forest.” Lila hesitated for a moment, but then nodded. Piri seemed to know more than it was letting on, and if the forest had indeed called her, then she had to see this through. They walked together in silence for a while, Piri darting ahead and occasionally glancing back to make sure Lila was following. The forest grew darker as they went deeper, the trees thicker and the air heavier with magic. Eventually, they reached a clearing, and in the center stood the ancient oak from Lila’s vision. It towered above them, its branches stretching high into the sky, and its roots twisted deep into the ground. Beneath the roots, something glowed faintly—the feather. Lila approached slowly, her heart pounding in her chest. She knelt beside the roots and reached out, her fingers brushing against the glowing feather. As soon as she touched it, a surge of energy shot through her, and the world around her shifted. Chapter 3: The Heart of the Forest The world swirled around Lila, the clearing and the forest disappearing in a blur of colors and shapes. She felt as though she were floating, suspended in a place between reality and dreams. Suddenly, the swirling stopped, and Lila found herself standing in a vast expanse of nothingness. The ground beneath her was made of mist, and the sky above her was an endless void. In front of her, a figure stood, cloaked in shadow. “Who are you?” Lila asked, her voice echoing in the emptiness. The figure stepped forward, and as it did, the shadows peeled away, revealing a woman with long silver hair and eyes that glowed with an inner light. She was dressed in robes made of leaves and feathers, and around her neck hung a pendant in the shape of a tree. “I am the Guardian of the Forest,” the woman said, her voice soft but powerful. “Or at least, I was.” Lila stared at her, confusion and awe mixing in her chest. “What do you mean?” The Guardian smiled sadly. “Long ago, I protected this forest from the darkness that now threatens it. But my time has passed, and now the forest has chosen a new Guardian.” Lila’s heart skipped a beat. “Me?” The Guardian nodded. “You.” Lila shook her head, stepping back. “No, I can’t. I’m not... I’m just a girl from the village. I’m not a Guardian.” “You are more than you think,” the Guardian said. “The forest does not choose lightly. It sees something in you that even you cannot yet see.” Lila wanted to protest, but something inside her—something deep and ancient—stirred. The forest had called her. She had felt it in her bones, in her very soul. Maybe the Guardian was right. “What do I have to do?” Lila asked, her voice barely above a whisper. The Guardian stepped forward, placing a hand on Lila’s shoulder. “You must pass the trials of the forest. Only then will you unlock the power within you.” Lila swallowed hard. “What kind of trials?” “The trials will test your heart, your mind, and your spirit,” the Guardian said. “They will not be easy, but if you succeed, you will become the new Guardian, and the forest will be saved.” Lila nodded, determination rising within her. She didn’t know if she was ready, but she knew she had to try. For the forest. For the village. For herself. “I’ll do it,” she said. The Guardian smiled. “Then your journey begins now.” Chapter 4: Trials of the Guardian Lila returned to the forest, her heart pounding in her chest as she prepared to face the trials. The first trial, Piri explained, was the Trial of Courage. “The forest will test your bravery,” Piri said, fluttering beside her as they made their way toward a dense thicket. “You must face your fears head-on and prove that you are worthy of the Guardian’s mantle.” Lila nodded, though she couldn’t help the knot of anxiety that had formed in her stomach. She didn’t feel particularly brave, but she had no choice. The forest needed her, and she couldn’t let it down. As they entered the thicket, the air grew colder, and the trees seemed to close in around them. The path narrowed, and soon Lila found herself standing before a massive stone wall, covered in vines and moss. In the centre of the wall was an archway, but beyond it, there was only darkness. “This is it,” Piri said, his voice unusually serious. “The Trial of Courage.” Lila took a deep breath and stepped through the archway, into the darkness. As soon as Lila stepped through the archway, the darkness enveloped her. She couldn’t see her own hands in front of her face, and the air felt thick, as if it were trying to suffocate her. The silence pressed in on her, amplifying the sound of her heartbeat thudding in her ears. For a moment, fear threatened to overtake her. She thought of the stories she had heard from the villagers about people who ventured too far into the forest and never returned. But Lila wasn’t like them. She had been chosen by the forest. She had to believe in that. She took a deep breath and started walking, one cautious step at a time. The ground beneath her feet was uneven, and the air seemed to buzz with an unseen energy. She kept moving, even though every instinct told her to turn back. Suddenly, a flicker of light appeared ahead, faint and distant. Lila quickened her pace, drawn to the light like a moth to a flame. As she got closer, she realized the light was coming from a figure standing at the end of the path. “Who are you?” Lila called, her voice trembling. The figure didn’t respond. It stood still, cloaked in shadow, its face obscured by the darkness. As Lila approached, she felt a wave of dread wash over her. Something about the figure was deeply unsettling, as if it didn’t belong in this world. Lila stopped a few paces away from the figure, her heart pounding in her chest. “What do you want?” she asked, trying to keep her voice steady. The figure remained silent for a moment, then it spoke, its voice low and cold. “You are not worthy.” Lila felt the words pierce her like a dagger. She had always feared that she wasn’t good enough, that the forest had made a mistake in choosing her. The figure’s words seemed to confirm her deepest insecurities. “No,” Lila whispered, shaking her head. “That’s not true.” The figure took a step toward her, and Lila instinctively backed away. “You are weak,” it hissed. “You will fail, just like the others.” Lila’s hands trembled, and she felt the weight of the darkness pressing in on her. The figure’s words echoed in her mind, feeding the fear that had been growing inside her since she entered the forest. Maybe the figure was right. Maybe she wasn’t strong enough to be the Guardian. But then she remembered the Guardian’s words—the forest had chosen her. It had seen something in her, something that even she hadn’t yet realized. The forest wouldn’t have called her if she wasn’t worthy. “I am worthy,” Lila said, her voice growing stronger. “I was chosen.” The figure stopped, its shadowy form wavering for a moment. Lila took a deep breath and stepped forward, her fear giving way to determination. “I may be afraid, but I won’t let that stop me,” she said, her voice steady. “I will protect the forest.” With those words, the figure began to dissolve, its shadowy form disintegrating into the air. The light grew brighter, and the oppressive darkness lifted. Lila felt a surge of warmth and relief as the world around her shifted once again. She found herself standing in a clearing, the stone archway behind her. Piri fluttered over, his wings buzzing with excitement. “You did it!” he exclaimed. “You passed the Trial of Courage!” Lila smiled, though she still felt the weight of the figure’s words lingering in her mind. She had faced her fear, but the journey was far from over.
