CHAPTER ONE The Girl Who Refused to Break.
Boots slammed against gravel in perfect rhythm. Dust rose into the early morning air, clinging to sweat-soaked skin and tired lungs. The sun had barely risen, yet the training field already felt like an oven. Lena Cross kept running. Her chest burned. Her legs screamed. Every breath scraped like broken glass. But she did not stop. Around her, recruits were dropping one by one. Some bent over vomiting. Some collapsed onto their backs, staring at the sky like it might save them. Lena stayed upright. Her brown hair was pulled into a tight, regulation bun. Strands had escaped, sticking to her damp cheeks. Her uniform was too big in some places, too tight in others, but she wore it like armor. She refused to be the weak one. A whistle cut sharply through the air. “FORMATION!” The remaining recruits scrambled into lines. Lena slid into place, heart pounding violently. Captain Aaron Wolfe stood several meters in front of them. Tall. Broad-shouldered. His uniform sat on him like it had been designed for his body alone. His face was sharp, unreadable, carved from discipline and authority. His dark eyes swept over the recruits. Cold. Measuring. Lena felt that gaze brush over her. Something tightened in her stomach. “Today,” Captain Wolfe said, voice steady and commanding, “you will learn what this uniform truly costs. Pain. Exhaustion. Discipline. And obedience.” He began pacing slowly in front of them. “If you think this is a game—leave now.” No one moved. His boots stopped. “Good. Because once you stay, you don’t get to quit when it gets hard.” His eyes stopped on Lena. Not because she was the strongest. Not because she was the biggest. Because she was still standing. Her face gave nothing away. Inside, she was shaking. Captain Wolfe held her gaze for one extra second. Then he moved on. Lena released a breath she didn’t realize she’d been holding. --- They were sent to obstacle training. Walls. Rope climbs. Mud crawls. Carry drills. By the time Lena reached the rope wall, her arms felt useless. The recruit ahead of her tried and failed twice before slipping and falling hard into the mud. A sergeant barked, “MOVE!” Lena stepped forward. She stared up at the rope. Too high. Too tired. Too bad. She grabbed it anyway. Her hands burned immediately. Halfway up, her grip slipped. For a split second, she hung by one hand. The ground waited below. Lena thought of her father. His uniform hanging in the closet. His boots by the door long after he was gone. His voice telling her: Don’t ever let fear decide who you become. She pulled. A small, broken sound escaped her throat. Muscle tore. Pain flared. But she climbed. When she reached the top, she collapsed over the edge, gasping. Below, Captain Wolfe watched silently. Something unfamiliar stirred in his chest. Not attraction. Not yet. Respect. --- That night, the barracks were quiet except for soft groans and shifting bodies. Lena lay on her bunk staring at the ceiling. Every inch of her hurt. She welcomed it. Pain meant she survived. Across the base, Captain Wolfe sat alone in his office, reviewing training reports. One name kept catching his eye. Cross, Lena. Average physical stats. No special background. No advantages. Yet she had outlasted recruits stronger than her. He closed the file. Rules were rules. Recruits were recruits. Officers were officers. He had learned long ago not to blur lines. So why couldn’t he stop thinking about the look in her eyes? Not fear. Not pride. Defiance. Like she was daring the world to break her. And failing. --- Lena didn’t know it yet. But the man who would become her greatest danger… Was the same man who would one day own her heart.
