{LUMIRA}
For a second, my brain refused to process what my eyes had just seen.
Two men.
Mirabel.
Struggling.
And then the back door of the car slammed shut with a sound that felt like a gunshot tearing through the air.
My heart didn't start racing immediately. It stopped. Completely. Like my body was waiting for my mind to deny it.
"What's the problem, Lumira?" A hand touched my shoulder from behind, and I jumped startled.
A look of concern crossed Tara's face, while my ribs strained against the rush of adrenaline. "They have her."
She pulled a face. "What are you talking about?"
At that very moment, the car drove past speedily as though they were heading somewhere important, and my eyes trailed after the trunk, imprinting the plate number in my head as fast as I could.
—SK 23 FAE
"Quick, Tara. Your car keys."
She didn't argue. She just ran into the house, and returned a second later, holding the keys. "Do you need me to drive?"
"Yes," I managed.
Together, we raced into Tara's blue Peugeot parked by the curb. She ignited the engine and quickly drove in the same direction the black sedan had gone.
We maintained our space behind a cab and a tow truck to avoid being spotted, while keeping a close mark on our target. "Are you saying that black sedan has her?"
"Yes," I replied, not removing my gaze from the rear of the car for once.
"And how do you intend to rescue her? What if those men are armed, Lumira?" Her voice carried a note of trepidation.
I exhaled sharply.
Tara was right. Even a glance at those men told me they were heavily armed, and there was no way they'd release Mirabel just because we asked nicely.
"Oh f**k!" Tara shrieked as she veered sharply, narrowly missing an oncoming car.
"For f**k's sake, Tara!" I shouted, releasing a breath I hadn't realized I had been holding.
"I didn't see the car quickly." She muttered, tutting at the near-accident. "Aren't you going to inform the brothers? I mean, rescuing their sister might make them cut you some slack. Maybe you won't have to run."
That was the right thing to do.
I reached for my phone— but then remembered I didn't have any of their contacts.
As though she had expected it, Tara gave me a sideways stare. "You do not have their number right?"
I shook my head and bit down on my lower lip. "No."
"What about a worker in their house?"
And then it clicked.
Ma'am Stella actually gave me her number earlier today while we were waiting for Gamma Vance's call.
I slammed my hand against my thighs, feeling a surge of triumph. "The housekeeper... the housekeeper gave me her number this morning."
"Then what are you waiting for?"
Without further ado, I unlocked my phone's screen and tapped on Ma'am Stella's number.
"Lumira?" She whispered when she picked up.
"Ma'am Stella," I breathed back.
"Oh, it's a good thing you left. Beta Kyro came a while ago and had been raging all over. Minutes ago, he had gone to your room to check for you while Ama returned upstairs."
The thought of Beta Kyro made me recoil, my stomach tightening into a hard knot.
"There's something you should know, Ma'am Stella. I just found Mirabel and her abductors. I'm currently tailing them."
"Are you serious?" Shock edged her voice.
"Yes, Ma'am."
"Then we have to inform her brothers right away."
"But, Beta Kyro?" I complained. "Ma'am Stella, what do you think I should do? I am so scared."
"Don't be. You have to do what's right."
"Bring that phone here," I heard an authoritative command in the background, and my heart somersaulted in fear. Even though Beta Kyro wasn't around me, the thought of him always prompts me to almost pee my pants.
"I think you might want to hear this, yourselves." Ma'am Stella said to them.
Her footsteps resounded on the other end, and there was a rustling sound before a different voice came on.
"Where are you, Lumira?"
Realizing the voice belonged to Gamma Vance made me expel a breath of relief. "I know where Mirabel is being taken."
"Come again," Gamma Vance uttered sharply.
"I just saw two men hurled Mirabel into their car barely five minutes ago, and now they are taking her to God knows where."
"f**k," I heard him cuss silently on the phone. "Do you still have them in sight?"
"Yes," I nodded as if he could see me. "I'm following them."
"Very good." He commented. "Now, share your location with me. Can you take a picture of the plate number?"
"Uhmm..." I looked at the line of cars in front of us. "Not really, but the plate number is SK 23 FAE."
"Great. We can work with that." Gamma Vance said. "Text the license plate to my number."
"But I don't have your number." I pointed out, and then there was silence.
I brought my phone from my ear to look at the screen, only to see that the call was still connected.
Suddenly, the call ended, and another call came in almost immediately.
Recognizing the unsaved number, I knew it was Gamma Vance. So I slid the screen to the receiver's end and brought it to my ear.
"Send the license plate to this number immediately. Don't worry, we are right behind you." That was all I heard before the call disconnected again.
"Her brothers?" Tara inquired, and I answered with a slight nod.
I noticed the black sedan had ventured off the main highway, into a lonely road.
By now, there weren't many cars to hide our cover, so Tara kept the distance, keeping the vehicle in sight without drawing attention.
Barely twenty minutes later, I noticed a motorcycle approaching from behind in the side mirror.
"There is an oncoming motorcycle behind me," Tara announced, and then I looked to see another motorcycle.
Realizing we weren't alone anymore, a surge of relief washed over me.
"Gamma Vance and Beta Kyro," I murmured, recognition hitting me before Tara even had the chance to confirm.
Tara exhaled slowly, the tension on her shoulders easing just a fraction. "Oh my God, I can't believe the storm brothers are right behind me," Her tone edged with disbelief.
The roar of engines rattled the car as the two motorcycles flanked Tara's Peugeot. Through my end, Gamma Vance's voice cut, calm but commanding. “You can head back here, Lumira. Kyro and I've got this."
I nodded, even though he couldn't see me— because he had already sped ahead with Beta Kyro. My hands gripped the edge of the seat as my stomach churned with a mix of fear and relief.
Tara's knuckles were white on the wheel as she slowly pulled to a halt.
Looking ahead, we watched the black sedan twist sharply into a narrow street, clearly trying to shake off the motorcycles.
"Do you think they'd be able to rescue their sister without any bloodshed?" Tara asked me.
I shrugged. "I don't know."
As they disappeared completely from our sight, a flicker of hope surged through me. The Storm Brothers had Mirabel. They had control, and they would do anything to rescue their sister.
