Broken Engagement
A guttural moan tore from the room as his strong, possessive arms slid from her hips to her lower back, pressing her down onto him with a force that drew a sharp cry from her lips. Her raven black curls cascaded down her naked back, sticky with sweat as she rode him, faster and faster, like a cowgirl. Each desperate driving roll of her hips was a promise and a demand at once. Her back arched, and she threw her head back as if she was washed over ecstasy. “Oh god… Julian!” Her moan echoed through the entire apartment. Autumn stood there stunned for a moment, her one hand flew over her mouth, and the other one gripped tightly around the cheque she was holding. She was saving this up for their wedding. So this is the man I loved for all these years! She thought as tears rolled down her cheeks. And just then the woman stopped, then slowly she turned to find Autumn standing by the door of the bedroom. “What happened, babe?” Julian asked, his gaze also traveled towards the door, only to find Autumn, his fiancée of two years standing there like a frozen statue. Autumn flinched a little, finally able to see the woman riding her man. Jade Blackwood! The CFO of Blackwood Corporation! The very same company where I work! Autumn gasped in her head. So that’s how Julian got all these quick promotions? Autumn felt suffocated. I am nothing before them. She can crumble me in one go if she wants. My job, my career will be gone. And my grandma… No, I can’t let her. “Who the hell are you?” Jade asked, her piercing eyes locked onto her as if she could see through everything. “I'm the ex-fiance of the man you are riding.” Autumn took a deep breath and then slowly she took off the cheap metallic ring Julian once brought for her from a roadside stall and placed that on the table by her, as she looked Julian into his eyes and said, “good luck with everything. We are done here.” Jade moved promptly, and her eyes snapped back to Julian, “you have a fiancée?” Julian straightened himself as he scoffed, “do you really think I will buy a cheap ring from a roadside stall for my fiancé? I am a manager with Blackwood group afterall.” Then he looked at Autumn and yelled, “take this trash with you. It belongs to trash like you.” But Autumn didn't stay there to listen to their conversation. Cheap trash? Maybe that's why he brought this from a roadside stall and here I thought he was saving up for our dream home! It was just a joke for him. The engagement, the relationship. Everything. Autumn rushed out of the apartment, her teary eyes matched the clouded sky. The snow during this time was supposed to look magical. After all, it will be Christmas in seven days. Instead, the snow came down as a white monster as she started to run. Her lungs were huffing, not from running but from the pain she was feeling. And her? She can get any man. Why Julian? Another tear rolled down her cheek. I always looked up to her. I thought she was confident, independent and a professional! What a joke! She ran and ran as the fog slowly wrapped around her until she finally bumped into someone. “I'm sorry,” she mumbled before she tried to storm away only to be halted by a strong arm. “Hey, miss, wait!” The man said. Autumn stopped on her feet only to find the homeless man she often saw by the restaurant she works in. She was a pastry chef and every day she baked something new, she used to share a piece or two with him, thinking it would at least keep him from hunger. He looked into her eyes and gave her a piece of paper, “here. You dropped it.” Autumn looked at his hand. It was the cheque she wrote for Julian. She saved up for years, after sending money to her grandma's medicines— whatever she could, keeping all her wishes boxed. She wanted to give it all to him for their wedding as a Christmas gift. Autumn paused for a second. Her eyes drifted to the homeless man standing before her. “Thank you so much! This is all the savings I am left with,” she said, as she took the wet piece of paper from him. All her savings? The homeless man thought. But that's only fifty thousand. That's all she has? It's peanuts. His eyes went back to her face. She had been crying. Is she ok? A low growl revibrated in his chest. I am gonna tear off their throat, whoever has hurt her. But he wore a calm exterior, hiding his turmoil as he spoke, “You're welcome.” His eyes were unreadable. “Are you okay? Your eyes are puffy. Did anything happen?” His mind was in turmoil the moment he saw her in such a disheveled state. His wolf surfacing. “Yeah… I'm fine. Just having a bad day,” Autumn gave him a small smile. Even he cared enough to ask. And he is just homeless! And the man I loved for years turned his back the moment he found a richer woman. Autumn laughed in her head. The snow was covering up her hair. “You should get home. I don’t think the snow will stop anytime soon,” the man spoke again. And with that she felt a strong wind. The fog was thickening, and now she realized she was out of place. Where should I go now? I can’t go back to the apartment. Not after what Julian did. But all my stuff is in there. Her eyes went back to the homeless man. The snow was covering up his unshaved beards. The old torn tuke he was wearing was barely enough. He probably doesn't even have a place to stay either. Poor him! If I think about it now, I am only going through a heart break. Whereas he is going through a much tougher situation in life. She sighed, maybe I can just get a motel for a few nights. In that way, he wouldn't have to stay homeless during Christmas at least. And just then her phone rang, and a known number popped up. She picked up quickly, “hello, grandma?” “Autumn, is that you?” The other side wasn’t her grandmother, rather a male voice. “Yes. And you are?” She asked, panic rising in her chest. Who is calling me from Grandma's phone? “It’s me, Marcus,” he replied. “Marcus? From high school? Why are you calling from my grandma's phone?” Autumn was surprised. She hadn't heard from him since high school. How come he was suddenly calling her, that too at this hour? “Yeah, from school. And to answer your question, I am the sheriff now in our little town. And today I found your grandma collapsing in the grocery store. I think you should come back, Autumn. Things are not looking good. Christmas is also in seven days. She needs you.” He sighed. “Is she okay?” Autumn panicked. “She is stable now. Still in hospital, sleeping.” Marcus replied. “I will come on Christmas eve. I just have to wrap up a few things here,” Autumn replied. “That's great. Just bring your fiancé here too. She kept talking about you and your fiancé. Maybe it will give her the peace she needs right now,” Marcus added and Autumn gulped. “And probably will be the best Christmas gift you can prepare for her.” “O..ok,” she mumbled as she cut off the phone. Where on earth will I get someone to marry me in the next seven days? “Is everything ok?” The homeless man, who was still standing right by her, asked with creases on his forehead. That's right! I don't need to find a man. I can just ask someone to pretend. “Hey, would you like to be my fiance?” She asked him abruptly. “What?” The man gasped, his eyes wide open. Did she just ask me to be with her? His wolf yelled in joy, ‘say yes to mate!’
