It was a few days later when people gathered at the venue to pay their last respects to Grandpa Lu. As he wished,he was laid to rest next to Lin Fu , his alpha mate who had died ten years ago. They sang elegies, placed wreaths made of chrysanthemums around the grave friends wishing the family condolences especially Lin Xiao, the one closest to Grandpa Lu.
Hours later, the crowd began dispersing, leaving one by one till Lin Xiao was left alone at the cemetery. Only then did he release the breath he had been holding. Only the heavens knew how strong he had been holding himself back from breaking down.
Honestly,he had mixed feelings raging inside him — sad for losing the most important person in his life and angry at those people with their fake smiles and pity and the fact that he had to put a smile on his face and respectfully receive their condolences.
He stood by himself, weeping, his shoulders shaking, involuntarily emitting a scent of distress.
The two sixteen year old alphas roamed around the area dressed in sleek black suits as they walked side by side with long confident strides.
"I've never attended a funeral before," the younger pointed out.
"Me neither," the elder spoke absent mindedly, his steady gaze fixed on the omega they were walking towards.
"Ge,do you think it's alright to approach him?" He asked sounding skeptical.
"Well , let's try and see," the elder shrugged.
The two walked stealthily towards the weeping omega who had his back facing them. Immediately they got closer they were hit by a gush of distressed scent clouding the area.
Without a word, the elder stepped closer momentarily releasing calming pheromones,a soothing scent that was meant to counter the Omega's scent and erase negativity.
Lin Xiao sniffed loudly, the scent of rich agarwood mixed with saffron and smoked vanilla wrapping around him. Like everyone else he was sensitive to scents and he could easily feel the two distinct alpha scents even though one happened to be stronger enclosing him— warm and comforting like a thick fluffy quilt during winter.
The omega wiped his tears and composed himself before turning around to face the two alphas. He didn't raise his gaze to look at them.
"Hello,I'm Dai Zeyu," the one closer to him spoke up with a gentle smile.
There was an awkward silence; the other alpha who should have introduced himself stayed quiet looking around blankly.
To get rid of the awkwardness,Dai Zeyu spoke up again,"That is my younger twin brother Dai Shiyuan-," he said.
"Why do you always mention that? Besides we barely look alike not everyone might believe we're actually twins," the younger alpha grumbled.
"Don't mind him, he's a always a grumpy bastard," Dai Zeyu said playfully.
It was then that omega looked at them,a scrutinizing gaze at each of them. Though the twins were clearly fraternal,he still noticed the similarity in their features. He also noticed their obvious looks— they were tall, athletic, broad shouldered with striking facial features and coiffed hair. They had alluring scents which almost acted like magnets pulling omegas and betas towards them. They were the kind of alphas his grandpa usually said in his stories.
" I'm sorry about your grandpa. I'm not gonna pretend I know how it feels like since I've never experienced it but we'll just pray that you remain strong during this difficult time,"Dai Zeyu said empathetically and for the first time Lin Xiao actually felt consoled even after hearing pretentious sweet words all day.
And Dai Shiyuan on the hand knew it was definitely the worst time to laugh but hearing how poetic his brother sounded a few minutes ago he had to cover his mouth to suppress a laugh.

Mornings at the Dai mansion were never quiet, instead, they were filled with heated arguments between Dai Yi's two wives— Su Yao and Lin Nuo. If not fighting over designer brands , arguing who looked cooler than the other they were busy roasting each other about copying each other's style.
"I saw that Louis Vuitton dress first," Su Yao claimed. She was one entitled omega, her superiority complex radiating off her like second nature .
"Well I paid first," Lin Nuo said smugly.
"But it doesn't suit you. You forced your shapeless body into it just like you forced yourself into my husband's life," she jeered at her.
"Stop it!" Dai Yi roared, fed up with their childish arguments. The maidservants instinctively stepped back bowing their heads lower out of fear.
Dai Yi,the head of the family sat at the furthest end of the long dining table spearing the omelette with his fork, his jaw clenched, eyebrows furrowed displaying the simmering fury within him. Dai Zeyu sat next to his mother, head down having his breakfast quietly, his mind probably blocking out the chaos. Dai Shiyuan sat closer to Lin Nuo, leaning back lazily against the backrest, twirling the fork between his fingers with an amused smirk plastered on his handsome face. He seemed to enjoy the chaos, finding thrill in it. He even looked forward to family meals than anything else just to enjoy free dramas between his mother and stepmother.
For the next ten minutes after Dai Yi's outburst, the dining room was quiet except for the sound of silverware clinking against the porcelain and the occasional scoffs from his two wives who had probably found another way to express their resentment towards each other. Dai Zeyu was the first to finish;he looked up eyes scanning the room ,his eyes narrowing slightly when he finally took note of Lin Xiao's absence from the room.
"Auntie,is Lin Xiao still asleep?" The elder twin asked, his voice soft and polite.
"Oh he probably overslept. You can check on him if you want," Lin Nuo replied nonchalantly continuing with her breakfast as if talking about her son was a mere inconvenience.
"I can't believe you brought a bastard to our house," Su Yao grumbled, her voice dripping with disgust.
"My son is not a bastard!" Lin Nuo said angrily, her face flushed with rage.
"You probably don't remember who his father was," Su Yao commented with a sardonic grin.
Lin Nuo's grip tightened around the bread knife till her knuckles turned white, her face darker than a storm, probably controlling herself from stabbing her cowife.
"I'll just check up on him," Dai Zeyu voiced out quietly, getting up from his seat.
Meanwhile,Lin Xiao who had finally managed to sleep in the wee hours of the morning woke up from his slumber. He freshened up and sat on his bed trying to find the courage to head downstairs for breakfast as his tummy had been make protesting noises since he woke up and the fact that he had skipped dinner made it worse. Emboldened with time,he finally stepped out of the room taking light steps down the stairs as if the floor would break . When he reached halfway down the staircase is when he heard his mean stepmother calling him a bastard and his composure shattered instantly. He quietly turned and walked back to his room ignoring his grumbling stomach. He slipped under quilt covering himself from head to toe as if hiding away from the world.
A few minutes later, three soft knocks were heard before the door was finally pushed open ,Dai Zeyu walking in. His eyes landed on the omega buried under the quilt, his body wrapped around like a cocoon. He stepped closer, perching himself on the bed
.
"Lin Xiao, are you awake?" The alpha spoke in the softest voice ever and when he heard no response he tapped the sleeping figure calling out a few times. Lin Xiao clutched the quilt tightly holding his breath that he almost suffocated.
"You didn't have dinner and skipping breakfast is not a good idea," Dai Zeyu reminded in a gentle voice.
The omega finally acknowledged him, pulling the quilt just below his head and peeked out, faking yawns to convince the other that he had been asleep all as long.
"I'm not hungry," the omega lied.
"Even if you're not,you should atleast something," the alpha urged.
After a while of gentle persuasions by the alpha,Lin Xiao finally gave in. He reluctantly peeled the quilt away from his body and propped himself up avoiding the Alpha's gaze. Dai Zeyu looked at him intensely, his gaze assessing but not judgemental. The Omega's wan face worried him.
" How are you feeling?" Dai Zeyu asked delicately.
"I'm fine," the omega answered in a small voice.
"I know you're having a hard time but just so you know I'm here for you," the alpha reassured, his gaze softening.
The omega finally looked up;sadness pooling in those large, innocent, soft eyes, his lower lip jutted out .Dai Zeyu suddenly felt the sudden urge to protect him, shield him from the cruel world and he made a silent vow to do exactly that.
"Tell me ,what do you want to eat?" The alpha coaxed.
Lin Xiao was silent for a moment, his thoughts drifting back to his grandpa Lu,their shared meals and their cooking sessions. The memory and the fact that he would never be able to experience that again weighed down on him heavily, the grief becoming too much too bear.
" I miss my grandpa's pancakes,"he admitted,his voice breaking.
Dai Zeyu's heart ached for him,a wave of sympathy coursing through him. Without thinking twice,he scooted closer and embraced Lin Xiao, releasing soothing pheromones. The omega froze at first, hands hanging awkwardly but when the Alpha began rubbing soothing circles on his back he finally relaxed and let out his emotions sobbing against the Alpha's broad chest. Dai Zeyu was definitely good at comforting others— as the omega cried his heart out,the alpha was busy whispering sweet words to him in attempt to pacify him.
Later, breakfast was served and the alpha fed him placating him and making sure he took each and every bite. Lin Xiao was glad he had found someone— a companion to rely on at the big scary mansion. Apart from grandpa Lu ,Dai Zeyu was the second person he had felt safe with and suddenly conforming to the surroundings wouldn't be as difficult as he thought it would be as long as Dai Zeyu was beside him.
