Chapter 24
It was a week to exam and I was putting all my time into reading rather than spending more time with Oreoluwa or Queen and the group.
Reading suddenly seemed to be more interesting to me, it took my mind off mum's death and I suddenly wanted to make my mum and brother proud.
I wanted to be one of the best too. I wanted to turn out better than my elder sister.
Been one of the best shouldn't be that hard, right? The students in that position do not have two heads afterall.
Queen was gisting with the group as usual while I tuned off their loud voices. Anyone that thinks she can follow Queen's footsteps would just find themselves in a sinking ship.
I never knew how she did it, but she hardly read, did more of playing around and still topped the whole S.S 2 with Oreoluwa.
It was like she had a photographic memory, every explanation done in class by teachers stuck to her brain like glue which was why you would never see Queen been distracted while teaching was ongoing.
She could also cram the page of a textbook within five minutes, something that would take me good fifteen minutes.
No wonder Ugoma used to call her a witch, she was just extraordinary, I wish I had such brain, really.
It wouldn't be really hard to overtake Ore if she actually took reading more serious. If she could be the second best without trying so hard then imagine what she would be if she actually tried.
I really do pity Peace, Fumbi and Zainab who follows her around instead of actually reading, the girl knows her way and she shouldn't be copied.
My phone beeped twice indicating that I had a message,
'I know that you're a very strong woman, sweetheart, even if you do not know.
Strong women are hard to come across so I'm just so glad to have met you.
Slay the papers!'
It was from Oreoluwa, I chuckled to myself as I re-read the message several times. Been called a woman made me feel so good that I couldn't even describe the pride I felt.
Just when I was thinking that he would think I was ignoring him or something, he once again showed me that he understood me just fine.
Exam started the following week with English language and it was the best first paper I ever had in my whole school career. I knew it was a A immediately I left the exam hall, even though most of us were complaining about it been too hard including the best student in English language, Queen.
First term came to an end with us checking our results and then collecting a result slip each from our class teacher.
I had 86.4% grade, it was a huge breakthrough for me, my highest grade ever had been 68.7%. I was just four points behind Queen who had 90.4% and eleven points behind Ore who had 97.3%. I was even ahead of Eniola by a point.
I was officially part of the five best students in S.S.2. The arts and commercial best students always stood behind the science class.
Science students had always proven to be the best in my school, year after year.
I was so proud of myself, Queen was utterly surprised and Ore was so proud of me. Peace was just envious that I had left her behind, she never even measured up to me when I was average.
I guess there was always this potential in me, laziness and procastination shrunk it.
Been one of the bests wasn't that hard afterall, as long as you do your best.
