Nicolas’s words lingered in the air, heavy with conviction, but something about them felt rehearsed, calculated. I wanted to believe him—I needed to believe him—but the tiny voice in my head wouldn’t quiet down. He kissed my forehead and got out of bed, stretching lazily before pulling on his clothes. “I have a meeting today,” he said casually, like he hadn’t just sworn his devotion to me moments ago. “A meeting? On a Saturday?” I asked, narrowing my eyes. He froze for a split second, his shirt half-buttoned, before flashing me a grin. “Yeah, some last-minute changes with the investors. You know how it is.” I nodded slowly, but the unease in my chest grew. “Where’s the meeting?” “At the office,” he said quickly, avoiding my gaze as he adjusted his cuffs. “Why? You planning to stop by?
