"Yes." I heard myself say. I did not even think twice about what he meant. Somehow I knew he was talking about the pull I felt towards him. He hesitated for a second, but finally crossed back through the room, standing closer to me than any werewolf had done ever before. He placed one of his hands on my cheek, his thumb lightly touching my lips, while his other hand rested on the door behind me.

"Mate." He eventually whispered, looking into my eyes. With my back pressed against the door I took his words in.

Mate. To a werewolf. To the king of the werewolves. The guys who murdered my friends. The people who separated me from my family. Those assholes.

Prologue
My mother always said that my sister was the prettiest girl alive. I could see where she got that, Evelyn was gorgeous. Even the werewolves would flirt with her, breaking the pack rules ever so carelessly. I never got to see what became of her. I never got to see if she just blossomed early and turned ugly later on. I never got to hear my parents telling me that I would be pretty like her too.  They weren't killed. I was. Or at least they thought I was.  Over 150 years ago the werewolves took over. Since then life as a human has sucked. Some of the Alpha's were nicer than others. They let us stay in their territories, often getting jobs in kitchens or as cleaners. That was the best case scenario. Most of the Alpha's preferred to think of humans as inferior to their greatness. They were kept as toys to play around with, or hunted down once they were foolish enough to step on their land. My family and I stayed on a territory that belonged to Alpha Samuel. He was... indifferent towards us. My parents both had to clean the pack house. My sister and I did small chores around the house as well, but spent most of our time looking at the wolves, studying them as much as we could.  And then one day, a day that was just like any other day, the pack got a surprise guest. Another Alpha by the name of Garrick came to visit from a neighboring territory. He however, did not take kindly to us humans.  He stayed for a week. Every night he would pick out a few humans from the pack house staff and hunted them in the forest with his men. On the fourth night, I was among those he picked.   I never expected to make it out. I wasn't supposed to. They gave us a head start of five minutes. In those five minutes I discovered the wonders of running. I was only twelve at the time, but the chores around the house had built up my strength more than I had realized.  Now don't get me wrong. I am not trying to sell you the story of a twelve year old human outrunning fully grown werewolves. But I was smarter than them. I guess Evelyn was the pretty one, and I was the smart one. I ran as far as I could, counting down the seconds in my head. I couldn't even see any of the other humans anymore. Which turned out to be one of my blessings. I hid in a tree. As stupid as it sounds. In reality there was nothing I could have done to lose them. It was more of a string of fortune. First the rain started to pour down on us, with thunder soon following. My clothes stuck to my body as I watched the wolves pass slowly underneath me, obviously they knew someone was there. My heart was pounding in my throat.  They would find me. I knew they would. But then, right as I was about to just give up and accept my death, a loud scream ripped through the silent forest, followed by an nauseating sound I would never forget. They had found another human, who had been hiding in the trees near me. The pack, who was already a few beers in, walked back to the pack house after ripping him to shreds.  Rain, death, alcohol. My three lucky things.  After wandering around by myself for a few years I was found by members of 'the resistance'. I know, I also laughed in their faces. Their pitch to me was that one day a god by the name of 'Jesus Christ' would come and strike down all the 'demonic' werewolves.  I didn't understand much of it, and was about to thank them for the food and leave, when a pack of wolves came down from the hills, grabbing the man who kept talking about a god I had never heard of and tearing through more people. After that, I got to see the real resistance in action. People came from several hiding places. Most of them were armed to the teeth with swords, daggers and bows. They killed two full grown wolves while running away from them. It was my salvation, the moment I realized that my life would not always be this miserable.  I joined them not much later. Not for their stupid talk about humans reclaiming the world but for their community. The group grew, and then half of them died, and then they grew again. For years I had accepted that this would be my life. No Alpha would take in this many people. But then again, most Alpha's are dumb asses.  I had been around for about four years when a new member joined. His name was Nickolas, Nick for short. If he was a wolf he would definitely have been an Alpha. He always seemed to know what we should do and was eager to take control. It only seemed fitting. So far our group had been leaderless, most of the people were hesitant to be ruled over again. Yet, Nick seemed to calm everyone down.  For another three years Nick led our group without any problems. He installed a man by the name of Arthur as leader for the mandatory training and another man by the name of Russ as leader of the scouts to keep our area secured until we left again. Not long after this he came to me with a smile.  We had quickly become friends ever since he had joined the group. He seemed interested in everyone's stories, knowing who the group could rely on and who he shouldn't. I had now become one of the group's longest lasting members, mainly due to my ability to play hide and seek with the wolves. I knew everyone's backstory, and everyone knew mine. People trusted me. Nick asked me to help him lead. He told me I would be the voice of the people. So I became exactly that. I told Nick the group's problems and he would fix them as soon as he could. But I always knew that he had his eyes set on something bigger. He wasn't stupid like the early members of the resistance. He knew humans would never rule the earth again. One night, when everyone else was asleep, he confided in me that he hoped for an agreement between werewolves and humans. He hoped no one in our group had to die by the claws of those monsters ever again. When I had just escaped I hoped for the same things as he did. However the years of cruelty had made me numb to suffering around me. This world wasn’t made for us, it was made for the monsters.
