Victoria was asleep more often than she was awake these days. A healer told me that it was her body’s way of protecting the baby, yet to me it seemed that it was her way of protecting her mind. When she was awake, she could feel the pain. She worried constantly and the sight of me only made her sad.

I should have forced her to turn. She would never agree to it and in doing so she might hate me forever, yet I could accept that fate more easily than living on without her.
