CHAPTER:5

FALLING FOR THE BAD BOY Jessica hadn’t meant to fall for Kevin Carmichael. It had started as curiosity, then turned into something she couldn’t quite explain. She told herself it was just intrigue, that she was only trying to understand him. But deep down, she knew that was a lie. Kevin was more than just the school’s bad boy. He was a contradiction—reckless yet thoughtful, distant yet deeply observant. He could be infuriating one second and surprisingly gentle the next. And the more time Jessica spent with him, the more she realized that no matter how much she tried to keep her distance, she was already too close. They never planned to spend time together. It just happened. One evening, after a particularly stressful day, Jessica found herself wandering through the quiet streets near her house. She didn’t have a destination—she just needed to clear her head. The sky was painted in hues of orange and pink, and the air was crisp with the promise of fall. She had barely rounded the corner when she heard the familiar sound of an engine rumbling behind her. She didn’t have to turn around to know who it was. Kevin pulled up beside her, one boot resting on the pavement as he balanced his bike. His smirk was firmly in place. “You really do like walking, don’t you?” Jessica crossed her arms, raising an eyebrow. “And you really do like showing up uninvited.” Kevin chuckled. “You make it sound like a bad thing.” She rolled her eyes but couldn’t help the small smile tugging at her lips. “What do you want, Kevin?” Instead of answering, he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a helmet. “Get on.” Jessica blinked. “Excuse me?” Kevin leaned forward slightly, his blue eyes locked onto hers. “You’re always so careful, Anderson. Always thinking, always playing it safe. Just this once, take a risk.” Jessica hesitated. This was a bad idea. A very bad idea. But something about the way he looked at her, like he saw through all the walls she put up, made it impossible to say no. Against her better judgment, she stepped forward, taking the helmet from his hands. “One ride,” she said firmly. “That’s it.” Kevin grinned, clearly enjoying the small victory. “One ride,” he echoed. With her heart pounding, Jessica climbed onto the back of his motorcycle, wrapping her arms hesitantly around his waist. The moment Kevin revved the engine, she felt a thrill rush through her. And when they sped down the road, the wind rushing past her, Jessica let herself do something she hadn’t done in a long time. She let go. --- By the time they stopped, Jessica wasn’t sure where they were. Kevin had taken her to the outskirts of town, to a secluded spot overlooking the city lights. It was quiet, except for the occasional chirping of crickets in the distance. Jessica pulled off her helmet, her hair slightly windswept, and exhaled. “Okay,” she admitted, “that was kind of fun.” Kevin smirked. “Told you.” She shook her head, glancing out at the skyline. “Why did you bring me here?” Kevin leaned against his bike, crossing his arms. “It’s my spot. Somewhere I go when I need to think.” Jessica turned to him, surprised. “And you brought me here?” He shrugged, looking away for a moment before meeting her gaze again. “Yeah. Guess I did.” Something shifted between them then. It wasn’t just a game anymore, wasn’t just teasing words and stolen glances. Jessica saw it in his eyes—that hesitation, that quiet vulnerability he rarely let anyone see. She should’ve been scared. She should’ve pulled away. Instead, she took a step closer. “You’re not what people think you are, are you?” she asked softly. Kevin didn’t smile this time. “And what do people think I am?” Jessica held his gaze. “Someone who doesn’t care. Someone who doesn’t feel.” Kevin let out a breath, looking down for a moment before shaking his head. “Maybe that’s easier.” Jessica swallowed. “Easier than what?” He looked at her then, really looked at her. “Easier than getting hurt.” The words hung between them, heavier than anything else they had ever said. Jessica could’ve walked away right then. She could’ve told herself this was too much, that she was getting too close. But she didn’t. Instead, she reached out, her fingers brushing against his. A silent promise. A quiet understanding. Kevin didn’t pull away. And in that moment, Jessica knew. She was falling for him. And there was no turning back.
