CHAPTER.1
Rebecca's Happiness
Rebecca's life was a whirlwind of happiness. She and Anthony, her high school sweetheart, were practically inseparable. From their first awkward encounters in the school hallways to their shared dreams of a future together, they were each other's rocks. Anthony, the quiet one with a charming smile, and Rebecca, the vivacious extrovert, were a perfect match.
Their lives were a tapestry woven with adventures hiking mountains, chasing sunsets on spontaneous road trips, and singing along to their favorite tunes. They had even bought a cozy cottage just outside the city, their sanctuary filled with wildflowers and the promise of a future family.
Everything seemed perfect, a fairy-tale came to life. They were both thriving in their careers, and their love was stronger than ever. Anthony, with his warm embrace and eyes that promised forever, was the love of Rebecca's life.
One evening, while watching the sunset from their back porch, Anthony whispered, "I love you," his voice filled with certainty. Rebecca's heart soared. "I love you too, more than anything," she replied, snuggling into his side.
But life, as it often does, has a way of throwing curveballs. A few weeks later, a phone call from Sarah, Rebecca's best friend, sent chills down her spine. Sarah's voice was shaky, a stark contrast to her usual fiery spirit.
"Rebecca," she said, "I need to talk to you. It's important."
Rebecca's gut twisted with concern. "Is everything okay, Sarah? You sound... off."
"I don't think we should talk over the phone. Can we meet tomorrow morning? I'll come by your place."
Something about Sarah's tone made Rebecca uneasy, but she pushed the feeling aside. The next morning, Sarah arrived at the cottage, looking pale and gaunt, a shadow of her usual vibrant self.
"Sarah, what's going on?" Rebecca asked, her worry growing. "You're scaring me."
Sarah fidgeted with her shirt, her voice barely a whisper. "Rebecca, there's something I've been keeping from you for a while. And it's... it's about Anthony."
Rebecca's heart skipped a beat. Anthony? What could Sarah possibly know about him? "What are you talking about?" she asked, her voice steady despite the tremor in her heart.
"I... I've seen him. With someone else," Sarah blurted out, tears welling in her eyes.
Rebecca froze, her mind struggling to process the words. "What? No, that can't be true. Anthony would never..."
Sarah shook her head, her voice trembling. "I didn't want to believe it either, Rebecca, but I've seen him. More than once. With the same woman."
A cold dread washed over Rebecca. This can't be happening. Not Anthony. The man who promised her forever. "You must be mistaken," she whispered, her mind grasping for an explanation.
"I wish I was," Sarah said softly. "I tried to tell myself it wasn't what it looked like, but I saw them together yesterday. They were... intimate. Rebecca, I'm so sorry."
Rebecca's world crumbled. It felt like the ground was slipping away beneath her. This wasn't real. Anthony loved her. They were going to get married, start a family. He wouldn't betray her like that.
"I don't believe you," Rebecca said, her voice stronger now, but her heart pounding in her chest. "You must have misunderstood. Anthony loves me. We're going to get married, start a family. He wouldn't..."
"I'm not lying, Rebecca. I wouldn't come to you with this if I wasn't sure."
Rebecca stared at Sarah, her mind a whirlwind of disbelief, anger, and fear. She wanted to scream, to deny everything, but Sarah's sadness, the truth in her eyes, made Rebecca hesitate.
She stood up, pacing the room, her thoughts spiraling. "I need to talk to him," she muttered. "I need to hear it from him."
Sarah nodded silently, knowing there were no words that could make this easier.
Rebecca's hands trembled as she reached for her phone. She dialed Anthony's number, her heart pounding in her chest. It rang once, twice, and then went to voicemail. She hung up and tried again, but there was no answer.
The knot in her stomach tightened as doubt crept in, her mind playing out scenarios she didn't want to believe. Where was he? Why wasn't he answering?
Hours passed, and still no word from Anthony. By nightfall, Rebecca's heart was in her throat, and she couldn't shake the ominous feeling that something was terribly wrong. She tried to distract herself, but her mind kept returning to Sarah's words, the seed of doubt growing by the minute.
Then, just as the clock struck midnight, there was a knock at the door.
Rebecca rushed to the door, hoping to see Anthony standing there, ready to explain everything. But when she opened it, her blood ran cold.
A police officer stood on her doorstep, his expression somber.
"Are you Rebecca Williams?" the officer asked, his voice low.
"Yes," she whispered, dread creeping into her voice. "Is everything alright?"
The officer hesitated for a moment, then spoke the words that shattered Reb
ecca's world.
"There's been an accident. It's about Anthony."
