As I was walking home from work, I noticed a man in black. He offered to walk with me while we talked. Of course, my mother taught me to stay away from strangers. I told him to leave me alone, but he said he had an offer for me. I tried to refuse, but he insisted. I listened to his offer, he wanted me to kill a man for exchange of the career of my dreams. I had turned down his offer, he wasn't happy with me. He disappeared without a trace. I was worried, however, I thought nothing of it. I called my husband in hopes he could give me some insight, but he was out of reach. There was nothing he could do. I woke the next morning, but everything was different. The man in mystery was at every corner in my mind. Was he a ghost or a magician? The answer was no one knew, no one else has seen or heard of such a creature. I was worried about my safety; I also didn't want to spend my life in prison. This man in mystery would be the death of me. After spending the day in hell, I have decided to play his game. I was going to commit the murder of his choosing. I walked home from work that night, like the night before. The man in mystery was nowhere in sight, so I called upon him. "You called for me, dear?" He asked. I nodded my head. "What did you want to talk about?" He asked again. "I will commit this murder, just tell me who it is." I exclaimed to him. He smiled and pointed to my heart. "It must be a sacrifice of the one you love most. I would imagine a woman as beautiful as you have a husband." I began to tear up, the man I loved the most was my husband. I knew I wanted to be a writer, but at what lengths would I go for my dream? I spent the week deciding if my dream was worth killing the man I love. It was a tough decision, but it was one I had to make. I grabbed the bottle of pills from the top drawer, then I poured them into his drink. I would surely fall in love again; I wasn't much happy anyways. No one would know I did it, he could have committed suicide. I poured his drink into it and let the soda engulf the pills. As soon as the pills dissolved, I handed it to him as if it were nothing at all. I walked outside to smoke as my husband fell fast asleep in the hotel bed. I packed my stuff and left him alone. I didn't let a single soul of what I did. This was a secret that I had to bear alone. After moving in with one of my close friends, I read the news on my phone, and saw his name pop up. I was sad for sure, but my dreams were about to unravel. I was excited for my new life, so I called the man in the shadows. "I know what you did, I am very proud of you for killing the man you loved so much. I will now reward you with what I had promised. So, what is your choice of career?" He asked. "I would like to write; it has been my dream since I was a little girl." "Very well, you will get your dream. Tomorrow around seven in the morning, you will get a call from a writing company. They will want you to submit your portfolio with them." When I turned around to thank him, the man had left me once more. I was nervous about this new job. I hope this wasn't a scam. I would be in tears if so. I decided to lay down, and for the first time it was peaceful. I fell asleep fairly quick. As I could feel that the man was gone. I didn't know if this was a forever kind of peace, but as for now I could sleep in quiet. I heard my phone going off in the early morning. It just occurred to me, I never game my name or number out. The man must have known me before I knew him. I answered the phone as if I was up for hours. "Hello." "Hi, is this Sarah?" "Yes, it is. Who is speaking?" "This is Marsha from Freelancers Writing, one of our sponsors gave us your name and number and said you were interested in a job?" "Yes, of course." "I would need to see your portfolio before we hired you, but you seem to be perfect for this job. Just mail your portfolio to our offices and we will look it over right away." "I would love that, thank you so much." "You are welcome. Have a great day, Sarah." Just then the line clicked. I got up out of bed to make some coffee. I didn't actually think that my dream would unravel. After I had my coffee, I decided to take a quick shower. Clearly, I was awake for the day. I wanted to drop off my portfolio since I was only a mile away. I was ready to go when he arrived. "I see you have gotten the call." "Yes, thank you whoever you are." "I must keep my name anonymous; my secrets keep me safe." " I understand, are you to leave me one day?" "If you wish, or I could check in with you to see that your dreams come true." "Can I call upon you, sir?" "Yes, madam, you can if you must." Just like that he vanished. The man was starting to grow on me, after all he did handed my dreams in my hand. I was forever thankful that this man of the shadows gave me this chance at freedom. I was free to write whenever and however I liked. I made it to the office where a lady named Chrissy greeted me. "Hello Miss, may I help you?" "Ah yes, I wanted to drop off my portfolio. Marsha had told me to leave it." "I see, okay. I will take that from you. When Marsha gets back from lunch, I will hand this to her, dear. Have a great day." "Thank you, Chrissy." I walked out when I could sense him smiling at me, the man in mystery.
