Chapter 31 John’s ears rang in the sudden silence inside his head. He couldn’t move. The throbbing in his head had stopped along with the howling, but he was terrified of it all starting again. The smell of the blood washed over him, strong enough to get him moving despite his fear. The cooling night air seemed to freeze the sweat and tears on his face. He walked toward the doors, forcing his feet into a relatively straight line, with his hands now shaking so badly he had to put the keys in his pocket to keep from dropping them. He felt just as disoriented and out of his body as he ever did when waking up from the worst of his nightmares, so he reached for one of the tricks he used to steady himself then.
