Chapter 14 John’s escape impulse only grew stronger when he saw easily twice as many people in the rooms behind them as there’d been barely an hour ago. He moved behind her and helped her with the black wool cloak. Before she could try to stop him, he reached around her and pulled his own dark green wool coat and black scarf from the fragrant jumble. The thought of acting the happy couple for an audience turned his stomach. If they couldn’t work this out here, he was afraid they might never work it out at all. “Fine, if you must,” she said. “I know you’re tired after the flight.” She turned and was out the door before he could react. The walk would do him good, if he didn’t freeze first. At the very least, the deep cold and wind did what the hot water and coffee had been unable to. J
