Chapter 1
"Come on, Mr. Parker. Last time, I said we should have a drink together, but I never got the chance. This time, you can't say no to me!" A seductive voice rang out from the restaurant. "Here, let's have a drink!"
Following the laughter, William Harris saw a pot-bellied, balding man with a sleazy grin scanning his girlfriend's body from head to toe as if he was appraising a piece of art up for trade.
Ruby Lee, however, didn't seem to mind at all. She even deliberately pushed out her ample chest, an outcome of William's meticulous squeezing during the past three years.
Standing by the porthole in his security uniform, William glared at the scene in the restaurant. Inside, the seductive woman moved with effortless charm, captivating everyone around her.
That was William's girlfriend, Ruby, the shining star of Topline Films, the top actress with unrivaled fame. She was a stunning beauty who stood out even in the cutthroat world of fame and fortune, bold enough to refuse invitations from the company's CEO.
Many male fans would line up at events just to catch a glimpse of Ruby.
But William knew that all of Ruby's public labels were nothing more than a carefully crafted façade by the company.
Andrew grinned, revealing his yellowed teeth, and said, "Hahaha, how could I miss a drink with you, Ruby?"
As he spoke, he slapped Ruby on the butt.
Smack!
The astonishing bounce even caught Andrew off guard despite his experience with women. "Wow, not bad! Hahaha!" he commented.
"Oh, Mr. Parker, you're so naughty!" Ruby giggled flirtatiously, dodging slightly before downing her glass of red wine in one go.
Seeing this, William couldn't hold back his anger any longer. With a loud "bang", he kicked open the restaurant door, stormed inside, and grabbed Ruby's hand, pulling her out.
"Hey! What do you think you're doing?" Andrew shouted, furious at having the beauty taken away. "Eric, is this how you manage your employees? How dare a lousy guard ruin my good time?"
Ignoring Andrew's outburst, William dragged Ruby to the deserted deck outside.
Ruby struggled hard, clearly worried about being seen.
"What are you doing? Let go of me! What if people see us?" she bellowed.
"I saw everything just now. That man slapped your butt!" William huffed.
"So what?" Ruby said matter-of-factly. "He's such a big shot. Getting slapped once isn't a big deal, is it?"
"So, you're saying anyone can touch your *ss, right?" William's brows furrowed deeply as he let go of her hand, his voice sharp. "Are you a f*cking prostitute or something?"
"Shut up! William, what the h*ll are you talking about?" Ruby shouted, glaring at him.
"Then tell me what you were doing in there. If I hadn't caught you today, how much longer were you planning to keep this from me?" William's hands trembled as he spoke.
"Fine! Since you want an explanation, I won't pretend anymore. Do you even know what my life has been like these past three years? We've been dating for three years. What have you ever given me? Look at the other girls in the company. They're dripping in diamonds and jewels. What have you ever bought me?" Ruby jabbed her finger at William's nose as she yelled.
"I saved up for six months just to buy you a bag!" William retorted.
"It took you six months to save for a bag, huh? Aren't you a retired soldier? You can't even use your military pension for me?" Ruby said coldly.
"My brothers died on the battlefield, leaving behind wives and kids. They need the money more!" William's voice grew angrier, as Ruby had hit a sore spot. "And because of this, you sell your body and betray our relationship, right?"
"You can't give me the life I want, but these wealthy men can." Ruby ignored William's growing fury and continued, "For example, without my hard work, you wouldn't even qualify to be on this luxury cruise! You'd spend your whole life as nothing but a pathetic security guard! What right do you have to lecture me?"
William stared at Ruby's face, now filled with disdain for him, and suddenly realized he no longer recognized her.
She had once been gentle and kind, clinging to his arm and insisting they buy some fruit to take home, dreaming of a happy life in the big city before they slept.
Eventually, Ruby moved to the city to chase after her dream, starting out as an extra on film sets, while William followed her and became a security guard at the same film company.
In just a year, Ruby had gone from an ordinary extra to the company's top star. Her status and wealth soared, and to avoid damaging her career by revealing their relationship, William had to pretend to be her cousin.
From that point on, Ruby often left early in the morning and came home late at night, always looking exhausted.
Once, William even discovered Ruby secretly buying lingerie, with black stockings and lace panties that were often torn or had strange smells.
Whenever William asked, Ruby would brush it off, saying it was all for work and just part of acting.
If not for today's chance encounter, William had no idea how much longer Ruby would have kept it from him.
A sea breeze swept past, and they both fell silent.
"William, we should have broken up a long time ago," Ruby finally said, her voice calm yet cutting.
"The way you are now, you're not worthy of me at all. I can't spend my life as the wife of a security guard. We are from two different worlds now. Mr. Stone has already arranged a new apartment for me, and once this event is over, I'm moving out. I don't want to stay in your shabby little rental for even one more day."
William hadn't expected things to end like this. Just as he opened his mouth to respond, a man in glasses walked over, casually slipping an arm around Ruby's waist. With a smooth tone, he said, "Ruby, what are you talking about with your cousin? Come back quickly. Mr. Parker's upset."
Ruby's body stiffened. She turned to look at William, her expression conflicted, before biting her lip and murmuring in a voice barely above a whisper, "Mr. Stone, it's just some old family matters. Don't worry. I'll head back to Mr. Parker right away."
Eric Stone smirked. "That's more like it. Mr. Parker is a prominent investor in the film industry. You can't afford to neglect him. Tonight, you need to do everything you can to make sure he's satisfied."
Ruby glanced at William's furious eyes. She lowered her head and replied softly, "I understand..."
"Good." Eric cleared his throat and turned to William, his tone condescending. "William, since you're Ruby's cousin, that makes us friends. In the future, don't act so recklessly. If you upset Mr. Parker, it won't just be you in trouble. Ruby will suffer too. Let it be the last time."
With that, Eric tightened his hold on Ruby's waist and led her toward the restaurant. As they walked away, he added nonchalantly, "Hurry up. Mr. Parker is waiting for you."
William had never felt so degraded in his entire life. It was as if someone had tied him up and poured filth over his head.
He couldn't dodge or fight back. He could only endure.
And all of this was for Ruby's future.
But now that Ruby had proposed breaking up, her future had nothing to do with him anymore. If he didn't fight back now, he thought he would live in humiliation for the rest of his life.
William's mind went blank. He grabbed a broken bottle from the ground and charged toward the backs of Eric and Ruby.
This time, it wasn't for anyone else. It was for the three years of humiliation he had endured and the pain of having the woman he loved taken away.
Boom!
Just as the bottle in William's hand was about to reach Eric's neck, the massive ship suddenly shook violently. The force threw everyone off balance, sending them sprawling to the ground as screams erupted around them.
"Argh!!"
"What's going on?"
"The ship hit something! Launch the lifeboats!"
"The ship's breaking apart!"
"It's on fire! It's on fire!"
"Run!"
Amid the chaos and violent shaking, William lost his footing. His vision blurred, and before he could steady himself, he fell into the cold, dark water...
