Chapter 2
"Shut up and sit still!" The man beside her barked.
Taken to their estate, Nora was confined to a room where she awaited her fate.
Luciano DeSanti had just woken up and his men were relieved to see that he wasn't dead.
He had just been knocked out.
"Boss, we thought we lost you." Marcel, his right hand man, said.
"It would take much more than that to bring me down." Luciano said, as he winced sitting up.
"Where is she?" He asked, already knowing the men must have brought her in after what happened.
"She's in one of the holding rooms, Boss." Marcel said.
Luciano never intended to startle her.
As a matter of fact, he was protecting her from her stalker at that time and had just wanted to give her something she had dropped while she was being followed right before she swung and knocked him out.
He had noticed the man following her and had decided to step in right before things could get ugly.
He and his men were parked across the parking lot when he noticed Nora arrived the first time and saw the man, who had been loitering around there all night, started following her.
And it was when she was returning from the store that he had walked behind her stalker and pulled him into the shadows at gunpoint, to stop him from following going any further.
"Don't make a sound." He said quietly as he waited for Nora to turn back and return to her car.
The moment she stepped out of the alley into the clear parking lot, he finally let the man go.
Noticing she had dropped one of the items in her cart, he decided to approach her and return it when she suddenly swung and knocked him out.
"Quite a mean swing she has though. I'll give her that." Luciano said to himself, as the men started tending to his wound.
He hadn't seen it coming.
"What should we do with her, Boss?" Marcel asked. "Should we let her go?"
"No, not yet," Luciano said, "I'm thinking."
Luciano thought for a while and moments later, an idea struck him.
Luciano had been suspecting one of his associates, Vincenzo, has been selling his secrets behind his back and has been engaging in some fishy business with his rivals but hasn't been able to get close enough to him in order to find proof.
Vincenzo was a shady man and can't be trusted. And knowing he had a history of being traitorous when it came to his partners women, he got the idea to get Nora close to him, acting as a distraction so he could spy on the man.
The man was famous for wanting women that belonged to others. It was a twisted desire but it was something that now looked like a very good opportunity Luciano could use against him.
So he decided to have Nora take his place as Boss of the empire in order for her to get personal with Vincenzo over "business" while he finds a way to catch him red-handed.
The game has a slim chance but Luciano is willing to take it.
"Tell her I'm dead." Luciano said to Marcel, and the men glanced at each other, wondering what exactly it was that he had in mind. So, Marcel decided to ask.
"Sorry, Boss," Marcel said, "May I speak freely?"
"Yes, go ahead."
"Why do you want to fake your death?" He asked.
"Vincenzo." Luciano said. "I'm thinking of a way to use the woman against him and find out what he's up to."
"Make her think she's responsible for my death and offer her the chance to be my wife so she'll take my place before my partners." Luciano added.
"What about the rest, Boss?" Marcel asked. "Are we going to tell them you died also?"
"No." Luciano said. "I want the news to be only for the girl. Deliver it in a way that's going to cause her to panic and then offer her a way out. If our enemies hear the news that I'd died, they would betray the alliance we have and would launch an all out war."
"While the girl takes my place, you will tell them I was on a trip," Luciano continued, "this way there won't be any suspicion, while I work from the shadows until I'm ready to come to the light."
"Understood, Boss." Marcel said, as he turned to walk away.
"And Marcel," Luciano called.
"Yes, Boss?"
"Make her shake a little. I want this to be believable. Give her no other options." Luciano said. "The more shaken she is, the more she can fit into the role I want her to play."
"Got it, Boss." Marcel said and then stepped away to go break the news to Nora, who was now pacing the floor in the room she was in.
"Oh God... Oh God... Oh God..." Nora panicked as she waited for a report from the men.
She was just in when her phone rang and Stacey's call came in.
She picked up immediately.
"Nora, why aren't you here yet?" Stacey asked. "Don't tell me you're going to bail on me again."
"Stacey... I—I don't think I'm going to be able to make it." Nora said, in her panicked voice and Stacey got serious immediately.
"Nora, what's wrong??" She asked.
"I think I killed someone."
"You what?"
"I— He... He came out of nowhere and I thought he was the man that had been following me so I... I accidentally knocked him in the head." Nora explained.
"Stacey, if anything happens to me...please... please tell my mother I'm sorry for everything." Nora added.
"What do you mean 'if anything happens to you'?"
"The men are Mafia and it was their Boss I attacked." Nora said. "If he doesn't make it I'm going to be in big trouble."
"Where are you right now?"
"They took me to their base." Nora said. "And I... I don't really know where that is."
"Oh God..." Stacey said.
"Stacey I'm scared."
Nora was just about to speak again when the door was unlocked and Marcel stepped in, putting on his most grim expression and Nora ended the call before she even realized she had.
"Is—Is he okay?" Nora asked, and Marcel sighed quietly, stepping closer.
"The Boss is dead."
