20. Screams and Superman.

GIOVANNI. It was late at night but I was yet to get home. My table was still stacked with the files and documents of the company. It certainly wasn't an easy job figuring out the slackness of this branch. I heaved a sigh, suddenly feeling the pound of a headache. This was my cue to stop working. I hadn't taken a break since Kiki left my office earlier. I began to arrange some files which I would take home with me. Next, I picked up my briefcase containing my laptop and stocked the files in it. I glanced at my wristwatch when I stepped into the elevator. It was way past my schedule. Since it was late, I had asked that Judy leave for home. Although she insisted on waiting, I ordered her home. “Good evening sir.” My newly employed chauffeur greeted me with the car open. Tired, I passed him a nod and got into the car. He shut the door hurriedly and went ahead to get into the driver's seat. I ran my hand into my hair, unbuttoning the first three buttons of my shirt having discarded my jacket earlier. I leaned into the seat and shut my eyes reminiscing over the day's event. I couldn't help thinking about her. I couldn't help thinking of Kiki. She would have made the perfect personal assistant. She was for the role. 'Hunt her down and take her to your bed.' My subconscious whispered to me. I groaned, giving off a sound of disapproval. That was the same thing Matteo had said. He had asked me to do that. But that would only prove her right. She had said I wanted to get into her pants and even though I want to, I would only be proving her right. “Are you okay sir?” The chauffeur asked when he heard me sigh. “Yes. I'm just a bit tired.” I mumbled in reply. “Sorry, sir. You should take some rest.” He advised. I nodded even though he couldn't see me at the moment. I wasn't going to take any rest. I had a lot to do and resting wasn't part of it. At least, for now, till I'm done with my work. I shut my eyes again letting out a yawn. My eyelids became drowsy and I soon started to doze off when the car suddenly stopped screeching loudly. I jerked back awake opening my eyes just to see the chauffeur in time step out of the car. I furrowed my brows in confusion wondering what was wrong. “Is there a problem?” He asked me. He stopped and turned towards me. “Yes sir. It appears there is a problem with the car. It suddenly stopped.” He told me. I was taken aback. Wasn't it a few days that this car was purchased for my use? I watched him open the car bonnet to check out the problem. After a few minutes, he ducked his head in through the window. “It's a minor problem sir. I will have it done in minutes.” He told me. I nodded and waved him off. Although tired, I decided to step down and stretch my limbs. So, I alighted from the car and joined the chauffeur. I looked around the surrounding we were stranded in. It was eerily dark and quiet, devoided by humans except us. I stood beside the chauffeur watching him work. Suddenly, I heard a yell. A strangled yell. With raised brows, I turned to the man working. “Did you hear that?” I asked him. He looked confused as he shook his head. I sighed, certain that I heard the yell. Before I could call it my imagination, I heard another one. It was louder now and sounded like a cry. The scream that rented the air was as good as a siren. Nobody screams like that unless it is terror beyond endurance. It was unmistakably a woman and a terrified one. My head turned and my legs started to go in the direction of the cry. “Stay here, I will be right back,” I whispered to the guy, turned around, and began to trace the sound with the flashlight of my phone on. I soon started to hear desperate pleas in a familiar voice. That confirmed that I was on track. The sound led to an alley and I walked in, aghast. The scene that stared right at me was a man unbuckling his trousers in haste with a woman pinned to the wall by another man. My blood boiled and I felt disgusted at the sight. However, when I walked even closer and sighted who it was that was held captive, rage consumed me. I couldn't believe it. I didn't understand what and how Kiki could be held captive by these men. The man pinning her down started to inch closer to her when I thought I'd had enough. I didn't know how it happened, I couldn't tell what consumed me because I soon had one of the men shoved into the wall, blood dripping from his mouth and nostrils. “How dare you?!” I screamed as I drove a punch into him. He screamed, tears of agony pouring down his eyes. I had rendered him useless like that. He fell limply to the floor, his face contorted with blood. I couldn't be bothered. I turned around and rushed off to an unconscious Kiki to help her up. Relief coursed through me and I shook off the thoughts of what would have happened if I had not stepped. She would have been r***d. I picked her up, bridal style and she wrapped her hands around me mumbling incoherent sentences. I smiled watching her peaceful serene face. Even in her sleepy state, she looked like a goddess. I soon got to the car which had been opened by the chauffeur when he sighted me. I still hadn't gotten his name. “What happened, sir?” He asked me, curious and worried at the same time. “She was almost r***d,” I told him and I heard him gasp, mortified but he didn't say anything. I guess he couldn't find his voice. I laid her still watching her with her head on my lap. Her face was so pretty up close. So beautiful. For once she wasn't rambling and that made me smile. “Are we still going home, sir?” He asked. I started to nod when something snapped at me. I couldn't take her home. She was unconscious at the moment. What if I took her home and she misinterprets my actions? She would do that. She appeared like the kind of woman who would do that. After all, she had made her point clear earlier in my office. So, I shook my head at him. “No, take us to one of the best hotels around,” I told him. I leaned back on the seat and watched her, I watched her sleep so peacefully, giving off soft snores that made me smile widely. I didn't take my eyes off her till we arrived at the hotel and had to check-in. We soon arrived at our room. I placed her gently on the bed, arranging the pillows so she could lie comfortably on them. Her head rested on the pillows like it was made for her. I arranged the duvet to cover her up well. Then, I watched her. I could never grow tired of staring at her this way and feeling mesmerized by her beauty. I could watch her all night. But I had to leave. I sighed and started to make my way to the door. But I stopped when I heard her mumble something in her sleepy state. I turned around just in time for me to hear her say them again. Those words made me stiffen with joy. “I had no idea that there was a superman in real life.”
