“Don’t you dare walk away from me!” He grabbed Mara’s arm and yanked her back so hard she stumbled. “You are not leaving this house until you sign those papers. Do you understand me? I don’t care who is standing in this room.”
Mrs Grayson made a sharp, furious sound. “Let go of her.”
Mr Grayson was already moving forward.
Daniel ignored both of them. He spun Mara to face him, his grip bruising on her arm, his face inches from hers, eyes wild with panic and rage.
“Sign. The. Papers.”
“Let go of me, Daniel.”
“I said sign”
His hand came across her face so hard her head snapped to the side. The sound rang through the entire room like a gunshot.
Dead silence.
Lily screamed from Sofia’s arms. “MOMMY!”
Sofia held her tighter, her own face white with fury and shock even though she had known it was coming. Her heart broke for the little girl trembling against her.
Mrs Grayson’s hand flew to her mouth, tears of rage filling her eyes.
Mr Grayson crossed the room in four steps. He grabbed Daniel by the collar and pulled him back with a force that sent a clear message. His voice came out low and absolutely terrifying.
“Take your hands off my daughter.”
The words landed like a bomb.
The room stopped breathing.
Daniel went completely still. His eyes moved from Mr Grayson’s face to Mara’s face and back again. His mind was working frantically, trying to catch up with what had just been said.
“Your… daughter?” he said slowly, voice hoarse.
Mr Grayson did not repeat himself. He simply looked at Daniel with the expression of a man who has just watched someone strike his child and is choosing very carefully what he does next. Cold, lethal fury radiated from him.
Vivienne’s perfectly arranged expression fractured for the first time. She looked at Mara. Then at Mr and Mrs Grayson. Then back at Mara.
Her face went white.
Mara slowly turned her head back to face the room. The red mark on her cheek was bright and clear. Her eyes were steady. She did not cry. She did not shake.
She looked at Vivienne’s horrified face and felt something that wasn’t quite satisfaction but was very close to it a quiet, aching vindication.
She looked at Daniel who was still staring at Mr Grayson like the floor had disappeared beneath him.
Then she picked her bag up off the floor where it had fallen.
“Sofia,” she said again. Completely calm. “Take Lily to the car.”
Sofia was already moving toward the door, holding Lily close against her chest. Lily had buried her face in Sofia’s neck and was crying quietly. Her thoughts were barely coherent, just a stream of mommy mommy mommy running underneath everything.
Mrs Grayson went to Mara’s side immediately and took her free hand. She looked at the mark on her daughter’s face and something in her eyes went very cold and very decided a mother’s wrath awakened.
Mr Grayson had not let go of Daniel’s collar yet.
He leaned in very close and spoke very quietly so that only Daniel could hear him.
“Every contract, every deal, every investor connection you have ever chased that traces back to Sterling Corporation dies today. And by the time I am done, no one in this city will do business with a man who raises his hand against my daughter.”
Then he released him and stepped back and straightened his jacket calmly.
He walked to Mara’s other side.
“Let’s go,” he said simply.
