Mara looked Daniel straight in the eyes, a cold, sharp grin spreading across her face. There was no warmth in it only exhaustion and barely contained fury.
“If you really want my forgiveness,” she said slowly, “tell this b***h to get the f**k out of my house.”
The words dropped like a bomb.
Daniel’s eyes widened. He rushed to her side immediately, voice low and urgent. “Mara, why are you making this so difficult”
She cut him off sharply, voice rising. “Daniel, I don’t understand why you’re defending her every single second! You said she was accused of cheating by her husband, yet here you are playing the good Samaritan, bringing her into our home. Is there something I’m missing here?”
Daniel opened his mouth to smooth things over, but Mara raised her hand, cutting him off again.
“Daniel, please excuse me. I have food to prepare for my child and my sister. So please…” She pointed firmly at the door. “Leave. Take Vivienne with you.”
Daniel’s jaw clenched hard. For a moment, anger flashed across his face, but he swallowed it down. He grabbed Vivienne’s arm and pulled her out of the kitchen without another word. The door swung shut behind them.
Mara stood there for a second, breathing heavily. She pressed her hands on the counter, trying to steady the rage and disgust swirling inside her. Then she sighed deeply and began cooking really cooking for the first time in what felt like forever in this life.
She took her time, pouring love into every step. Eggs, pancakes, fresh fruits… and most importantly, the small chocolate cake Lily had asked for. The sweet smell that filled the kitchen brought tears to her eyes.
My baby deserves this. She deserves so much more.
An hour later, the table was beautifully set. Sofia came downstairs carrying Lily, who looked excited and a little nervous. Just as they reached the bottom, Sofia’s phone rang. She picked it up quickly.
It was their mother.
Sofia’s voice softened instantly. “Mom… Yes, I’m okay. I’m at Mara’s house right now.” She listened for a moment, then added gently, “Don’t worry. We’re all fine. I’ll call you later.”
Their mother sighed with clear relief on the other end before hanging up.
Sofia placed Lily carefully in one of the dining chairs. The little girl’s eyes widened the moment she saw the cake.
So Mommy really made me a cake… That’s awesome! Lily’s thoughts rang clearly in both women’s minds, full of pure, childlike joy.
Mara smiled warmly and sat down. Sofia sat beside her. As Mara began putting food on Lily’s plate with gentle care, the front door opened again.
Vivienne, Lena, and Daniel walked in and sat down at the table like they belonged there.
Daniel placed a thick envelope on the table with a soft thud.
Lena’s eyes immediately locked onto the cake. Lily noticed and stared at her with open disdain.
I don’t want to share my cake with her, Lily thought bitterly.
Sofia smiled softly but said nothing.
Mara’s expression hardened. “Daniel, this table is for my family. Not for outsiders.”
Vivienne paused, her fork hovering mid-air. Daniel’s face darkened with anger for a few seconds before he forced it away.
“Mara, calm down,” he said, voice strained. “Vivi is not an outsider and you know that. Why are you acting like this?”
Before Mara could respond, Lena suddenly dug her fingers straight into the cake, grabbing a big messy handful and stuffing it into her mouth.
Lily’s inner scream was loud and heartbroken: My cake!
Sofia reacted instantly, pulling Lena off the chair with a firm grip. “That’s enough!”
Lily’s eyes filled with tears. “Mommy, look what she did to my cake!”
Daniel looked surprised by the chaos. He turned to Lena. “Why would you do that?”
Lena said nothing, just looked down with a small, satisfied smirk.
Mara shot up from her chair, voice shaking with rage and disappointment. “So I can’t even have one perfect morning with my family without someone ruining it?!”
Vivienne jumped in quickly, voice sugary sweet. “I’m so sorry, Mara. I’ll take her upstairs right now.”
Mara sighed heavily and sank back into her seat, rubbing her temples. The beautiful morning she had tried so hard to create was already tainted.
Daniel sat back down and muttered a half-hearted apology. Then, without even properly calming the situation, he pushed the envelope toward Mara.
