NGSLEY I’d just gotten out of my school uniform when the landline in my room rang out loudly. Dread crept down my spine and I walked gingerly towards it, knowing that my dad was the only person who ever called it, and things rarely ended well after he summoned me. “Hello?” my voice was nearly inaudible as I held the receiver against my ear. “Any second later and you'd have won the sluggish Olympics,” he scolded me harshly for not picking the call on time, “at least you’d have one trophy to your worthless name, then.” Despite how much I hated him, his insults still cut deep. Obviously, there was nothing I could say in response so an unnerving couple of seconds passed in silence before he spoke again. “Come to my office, now.” And with that command, the line went dead.
