Violetta POV
5 hours before
I had to adapt, to live at the college I am in now, the werewolf inside me feels unreal, but I know it is there, I can feel it, and one small thing sets it off. The fountain in the middle of the yard has felt my strength once or twice, the trees that scatter down the field have hidden my identity. The notice pins on the college walls scatter everywhere, it is mostly bad news. My eyes focus on one, I walk past it every day.
‘WARNING!! Unexplained vicious animal attack in the west, stay indoors, for your safety Two Victims: Sarah Small and Troy Small still not found…” Their innocent photos are held next to them, siblings, laughing as if nothing would ever happen to them, and no one can find them, they blame the animal attacks because it gives people some peace, maybe not their families, but an investigation is still going on, it explains the cops, speaking to people in their class, finding a trail to find them, I just hope I had nothing to do with their disappearance, I try and chain myself up, but I have always gotten free.
A solid chest attacks me, I don't look, I pause to hope it isn’t Luka again, I move to the side, to walk away, hiding my face from whomever it is. ‘Please don’t be Luka’ He may believe I have a problem; it would be the third time.
“Are you okay?” His voice appears recognizable, but strange at the same time, my eyes wandered across his feet, up his fine jeans, towards his black shirt, firm shoulders, and his face. His friendly face. “Jake?”
“Hey Vi,” His friendly voice sends butterflies to my stomach. Do I cry? I feel like I want to cry. I have waited so long for him to come back, he left during middle school maybe earlier than that, he just up and left, and no one knew where his parents left without a trace too. It was so bizarre.
“You have grown.” He laughs.
“So, have you.” I hit his arm.
“What was that for?”
“Where have you been? What happened to you?” I look him up and down, his golden-brown hair, his shimmer blue eyes. My lovely chubby friend is no longer plump.
“Well, a lot of arching and running, and well…”
“Yes, I can see.” He looks so strong, so tall, not like he used to be, he used to be shy, and anxious all the time. “You seem different.”
“A lot has changed.” He spoke the truth; a lot has changed.
“How have you been? Are you coming back for good? What about mother and father, and little Polly? Are you all finally coming back? It has been so long, and my father has been waiting for another BBQ. Constantly talking about you a lot.” I turn, his eyes wide open. “I'm sorry, I just missed you a lot. You just left, gone without saying goodbye.” I lean forward as he looks away, his forehead creases, and his eyes travel around me. “Would you like to go for a drink?”
“I must go.” His voice deepens.
“Already, where?”
“Violet?” I turned to where Luka stood. My face lightened up, I turned to introduce Jake, but he had gone.
“Who was that?” He mutters.
“A friend, he had to go.”
“Who? A new guy?” He mumbles.
“No, he left a while ago, he used to live here before, so you cannot call him now.” I beam.
“What’s his name?” What’s with the questions?
“Jake, Jake Redwood. Why?”
“Nothing. I must go.”
“Wait.” He walks past me and disappears around the corner too.
...
She squeals, the agonizing pain she feels, and her tears run down her cheeks, she may bleed, she is sensitive, and she looks at me as if I should help her, but what can I do? Hold her down? Do it for her? I am not that strong; she may kill me too. “Got it.” The facial mask came off from the bottom to the top, and she breathed, “I cannot believe Jake came back, after all that time, I wonder where he went?” Yeah, me too. I gaze through the window and scatter the ground. I push the anxious feeling out so I can spend time with my friends without believing that I am always being watched. Her oak brown hair was pushed back with the hair band, her shimmer blue eyes filled with tears as she peeled more, I couldn’t help but laugh, the dirty face mask was thrown at me.
“Ewww.” I squeal, the only human inside me I feel like I have left is with her. I grabbed the pillow and hit her in the face, the pillow dropped exposing her tearful eyes, one time she booted me in the face while playing, I swear if I was human, I would get her back.
“So how hot did you say he was?”
“One, I didn’t say he was hot, and two. And two.” My fingers held there for a moment; I didn’t know what to say. But it’s impossible to be with him anyway, especially knowing I'm not his type, we are not his type. She laughs, “Two what?” Her eyebrows dance and she hums towards the bathroom.
“Common, yours is probably done now.” The flannel burnt my skin, but it felt good, good enough to feel something. She scrubs my face as hard as she can, I know it isn’t painful, but I play along, telling her to leave me, “Anna!” I shout, she stops pouting her lips and heads out of the door. I stood looking at myself in the mirror, for a moment I did look human. I felt the pain, but I couldn’t let it get to me. I turned and threw the towel Anna’s way and heard a slight ouch coming back around. “So, he just left you without saying anything?” she shouts while climbing into bed.
“Pretty much,” I mumble.
“How strange.” I took my time wiping everything off, creaming myself and walking into the bedroom, Anna already cuddled up, I switched my lamp off beside my bed, it did nothing anyway, the moon was brighter and very delicate.
Walking up the stairs towards my dorm, I sigh, I feel horrible, the flower white dress softly brushes across my skin. I take out my keys believing Anna would be in there, but I take them out anyway. I look up, the door cracks open, and the dark chilly room falls silent, “Anna!” I rushed inside, it was pitch black, and the window blew cold air, I grabbed the bat behind the broken door and looked around, tears flew from me, my fangs exposed, and my heart beating more than normal, I walked towards the window, where the light from Anna's bed flickers. The room was destroyed, and the cracks of glass under my feet attacked my senses. I heard small squeals down below. I shouted for her to call back, “I'm coming.” I look down from the window and crawl out. I couldn’t move, the dress caught on something, I turned, and a huge man grabbed my throat and pulled me back onto the floor where the glass piece my skin.
“Hunter!” I waited, but no one came, unlike them stupid movies, I'm not going to crawl out of here, I stood straight up, running to the door, but he was too quick, how is that possible, his hand grabbed me again, throwing me back down, climbing on top of me, one hand tighten around my throat, “Please…” in the dark his eyes glowed a bright red, his face comes closer, a scar marked his whole left eye, he breathed in my scent.
“You’re not so powerful after all, the prophecy is wrong.” His voice echoed, it was deep, scratchy; I could no longer hold on…
I tried to control my wheezing; I looked over towards Anna to make sure she was okay. That I didn’t wake her, that she was still here. The pain thrusts tears from my eyes, the clock strikes 3:05 am, and the stabbing from my birthmark travels up my arm, sometimes I think it has its feelings, maybe that’s a werewolf sign?
I brought my knees up towards me as the moon brightened threw the window, I searched for my matches beside my bed, trembling as I did, I held the match and glided it across the side, watching as the bright flame slowly burned away the wood, the long match sticks lasts sixty seconds tops, long enough for me to only concentrate on that one thing, the only thing that calms me. ‘Hunter?’ I wait as the flame leaves me behind, but I don’t think he will answer, he could be asleep, right? It was minutes but felt like hours.
‘Violetta?’ I was so relieved.
‘Can I see you?’ I close my eyes waiting for him to appear, I sit in my mind, in the forest where any animal would love, I sit there like a child, an arm wrapped around me, startling me for a moment, but he hushes for me to calm, for me to relax. ‘I’m here.’ My mouth trembles, and the tears pour down on me, as I grip his hand, to not leave me alone. ‘I'm sorry I am late.’
