As I sat there with Max, holding hands and looking into each other's eyes, I knew that I had to make a decision. A decision that would change everything.
Do I stay with Jake, the guy I've been with for years, or do I take a chance on Max, the guy who makes me feel alive?
I thought about all the reasons why I should stay with Jake. We've been together for so long, and I know his family and friends. We have a comfortable routine, and I know what to expect from him.
But as I looked into Max's eyes, I knew that I couldn't stay with Jake. Not when I felt this way about Max.
"Max," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "I have to tell Jake that it's over."
Max's eyes locked onto mine, filled with emotion. "Are you sure, Emily?" he asked.
I nodded, feeling a sense of certainty wash over me. "Yes, I'm positive. I want to be with you, Max."
Max's face lit up with a smile, and he pulled me into his arms. "I want to be with you too, Emily," he whispered.
As we hugged, I felt a sense of relief wash over me. I knew that I had made the right decision.
But as we pulled back and looked into each other's eyes, I knew that this was just the beginning. We still had to face Jake, and the consequences of our decision.
"Let's go talk to Jake," Max said, his voice firm and resolute.
I nodded, feeling a sense of determination wash over me. "Let's do this."
As we walked to Jake's house, I felt a sense of nervousness building up inside me. I knew that this conversation was going to be difficult, but I was ready to face it head-on.
We reached Jake's house, and I took a deep breath before knocking on the door. Jake answered, looking surprised to see us standing there together.
"Hey, guys," he said, his voice cautious. "What's going on?"
I took another deep breath before speaking. "Jake, we need to talk."
Jake's expression changed, and he looked at me with a mixture of sadness and anger. "What is it, Emily?" he asked.
I looked at Max, and then back at Jake. "It's over, Jake," I said, my voice firm. "I'm sorry."
Jake's face fell, and he looked at me like I had punched him in the gut. "What do you mean it's over?" he asked, his voice shaking with emotion.
I took another deep breath before speaking. "I mean that I don't feel the same way about you anymore, Jake. I'm sorry."
Jake looked at Max, and then back at me. "You're leaving me for him?" he asked, his voice filled with anger and hurt.
I nodded, feeling a sense of guilt wash over me. "Yes, Jake. I'm sorry."
Jake's face twisted in anger, and he slammed the door shut in our faces.
I felt a sense of relief wash over me, but also a sense of guilt and regret. I knew that I had hurt Jake, and that our friendship was probably over.
But as I looked at Max, I knew that I had made the right decision. I was ready to start a new chapter in my life, one that included Max.
