Chapter 7 Abandoning the Engagement

1407 Words
Ethan’s face changed dramatically. “Give me the gun right now!” The maids were all stunned. Miss Sophie had actually snatched the gun from General Sterling? Sophie held the gun and slowly aimed it at Ethan’s thigh, her gaze ice-cold. In her previous life, Sophie had healed Ethan’s legs, yet he treated her so heartlessly. In that case, he no longer needed those legs. Ethan met Sophie’s eyes and felt an inexplicable chill. Nervous, he said, “Calm down, don’t do anything rash. Have you forgotten I’m your brother? Put down the gun now, or you will no longer be my sister.” Sophie sneered, “I don’t have a brother like you.” With that, she pulled the trigger. “Bang!” Sophie shot Ethan’s left leg, then swiftly shifted and shot his right leg as well. “Bang!” Ethan screamed in pain. His legs gave way, and he collapsed onto the floor, blood gushing from his wounds, quickly pooling around him. The maids were too frightened by the gunshots to move, crouching down with their heads covered, not daring to look. Ethan trembled in agony, his face pale. “Sophie, you actually dared to shoot me! I’ll tell Father and have you kicked out of the family! You’re not worthy of being a member of the Sterling family!” Sophie cast him a cold glance. Still holding the gun, she looked at it with disdain. “This gun is poorly equipped—just trash.” She removed the bullets, then smashed the now-empty gun against Ethan’s head. “Bang!” Ethan was knocked unconscious. The terrified maids scrambled to call for help, dialing the family doctor and rushing off to inform Augustus. Sophie walked over to the black-clad maid and helped her up. “Thank you, but next time, don’t go up against Ethan.” The black-clad maid saw Sophie’s bloodstained hand and said in a trembling voice, “Miss Sophie, your hand—” Before she could finish, Sophie suddenly fainted. The maid hurried to catch her. The pill Sophie had taken earlier could boost her physical abilities for a short time, but it came with severe side effects, causing her to collapse soon after. When Sophie woke up again, she found that her palm had been bandaged. She had slept the entire night. Seeing Sophie awake, the black-clad maid was overjoyed, tears streaming down her face. “Miss Sophie, you’re finally awake! Lord Sterling is furious that you injured Ethan. He ordered the bodyguards to surround your room, preventing you from leaving!” Sophie asked softly, “How is Ethan? Is he dead?” The maid replied, “General Sterling’s legs were hit by bullets. The doctor has removed them, but he can’t walk for the time being.” Sophie nodded, “You offended Ethan for my sake. Be careful from now on.” Sophie hadn’t expected that someone in this family would step forward on her behalf. The black-clad maid nodded, moved to tears, “Miss Sophie, when I was sick, you gave me a pill that saved my life. So I won’t stand by and watch you be bullied.” Sophie looked at the maid in surprise, recalling that event. That happened on the very first day she returned to the Sterling family. Just then, there was a knock at the door, and a bodyguard’s voice came through. “Miss Sophie, you injured General Sterling. Lord Sterling orders you to come to the study for punishment.” The black-clad maid’s face changed, “Miss Sophie, what should we do?” Sophie smiled, “Don’t worry. He won’t do anything to me.” Sophie pushed open the door. Two bodyguards stood outside, looking at Sophie, “Miss Sophie, please go to Lord Sterling’s study immediately for your punishment.” “I want to have breakfast first.” Sophie felt hungry and gave the two bodyguards a cold glance. The two guards knew Sophie had injured Ethan and didn’t want a direct confrontation. After thinking for a moment, they stepped aside. Sophie went to the dining room on the first floor and took a seat. She smelled something off about the breakfast and raised her eyebrows slightly. “Who made this breakfast?” The chef approached with a smile, “I prepared this breakfast especially for you. Since you’ve just returned home, you should eat this rotten breakfast.” In his mind, he was thinking, ‘Sophie bullied Miss Isabelle, and now she wants breakfast? How shameless.’ Sophie stood up slowly, pulled the chef by the neck, and pressed him into the chair, “Eat it all.” The chef’s face changed drastically, “I won’t eat it. It’s your breakfast; I can’t eat it.” Sophie’s right hand tightened slightly. She might not be able to handle Ethan, but she could definitely deal with a chef. The chef’s breathing grew rapid as Sophie’s grip tightened around his neck. His face turned purple, and he hurriedly begged for mercy, “O-Okay.” Sophie released him, took a few tissues to slowly wipe her hands, then threw the tissues onto the chef’s head. In a cold tone, she said, “Finish the breakfast, and then prepare a proper one for me.” Sophie added, “If you dare serve me something like this again, I will make you pay.” Sensing that his life was threatened, the chef’s body trembled uncontrollably. With tears in his eyes, he ate the spoiled breakfast. Miss Sterling was truly terrifying. After finishing the breakfast, the chef couldn’t help but vomit. He glanced fearfully at Sophie, covered his mouth, and hurried off. He vomited for a long time until he had brought up everything he just ate. This time, he dared not play any tricks. He prepared a proper breakfast and brought it before Sophie, “Miss Sophie, here is your breakfast.” Sophie nodded indifferently. Before she could finish eating, Lina strode over, wearing a stern expression, “Miss Sophie, Lord Sterling wants you in the study immediately. He has been waiting for a long time.” Sophie responded calmly, “I need to finish my breakfast first. Don’t disturb me.” Lina harbored deep hostility toward this Miss Sophie. Sophie’s actions were crude and forceful, completely lacking the Sterling family’s refinement. But after yesterday’s incident, Lina dared not act rashly and could only wait on the side. Sophie slowly finished her breakfast, wiped her mouth, and stood up. “Let’s go.” Sophie headed to Augustus’s study. When Augustus saw Sophie enter, he picked up a cup and hurled it at her in a rage. “Sophie Sterling! You actually shot Ethan’s legs. You are utterly unrepentant!” Sophie dodged, and the cup shattered at her feet. Sophie looked up, speaking calmly, “What you said isn’t correct. Ethan pointed a gun at me first, trying to kill me. I only shot his legs and spared his life. Why are you so angry?” “If Ethan got shot in the legs, he deserved it. Who told him to be so slow? He aimed at my chest, and I dodged. In the end, he couldn’t dodge my bullets. Isn’t he useless?” Augustus’s face grew terribly grim upon hearing her words. “You’ve been causing trouble since you returned. How could I have given birth to a daughter like you?” Sophie smiled faintly. “But you already did. It’s too late to regret it now.” She continued, “I heard the Sterling family has a marriage arrangement with the Winter family, and I am the real daughter of the Sterling family. I recall Caden Winter once said that it was I, not Isabelle, who was supposed to marry into the Winter family. If you stop making things difficult for me, I can voluntarily give up this engagement so Isabelle can smoothly marry Damien.” In her previous life, Sophie learned of her engagement to Damien Winter. Damien was tall, handsome, and dashing. She fell in love with him at first sight and often tried to please him. But Damien had no interest in Sophie. He only had eyes for Isabelle. Since that was the case, Sophie decided to rid herself of this engagement as soon as possible. She would never marry Damien. If Isabelle wanted to marry him, then let her. In this life, Sophie’s heart held only one person—Julian Hawke.
