I am a top art restorer and the hidden wife of Arthur Sterling, the wealthiest man in the world. For five years, my delusional ex-boyfriend had assumed I was an abandoned single mother raising a fatherless child. At today's private exhibition, his new wife shoved a jar of toxic acid toward my four-year-old boy. Then she ordered him to kneel and apologize. They were still threatening to ruin me when my husband walked into the hall. Julian had just ordered the sole heir to the Sterling empire onto his knees.

Chapter 1 The Delusional Ex
For five years, I had kept my old life away from my son. Then Julian Vance blocked the gallery exit. His arm rested around a woman covered in designer logos. Chloe, his new wife, looked over my black dress and the boy holding my hand. Her attention lingered just long enough to make the insult clear. The watch on Julian's wrist caught the light. It was the Patek Philippe I had bought when he was close to bankruptcy. I had sold a minor painting from my grandmother's collection to pay for it, and he used to call it his lucky charm. He had kept the watch. He had forgotten who bought it. Back then, I had sat beside him through every rejected proposal. I rewrote slides while he slept, called investors he was too ashamed to face, and sold the painting when his accounts finally ran dry. The morning the watch arrived, he fastened it on and promised he would repay me as soon as Vance Industries survived its first year. Five years later, he wore that promise as an accessory. “Aria.” Julian smiled as though I had been waiting all day for him to notice me. “You always did know how to track my schedule. This is a private exhibition.” I moved Leo behind me and kept one hand on his back. “We were leaving.” “Same quiet dress. Same wounded look.” Julian studied me with open satisfaction. “You remembered what I liked. Did you bring the child to make me feel guilty?” Once, he could not face an investor until I had rewritten his pitch at two in the morning. Now he glanced at me as though I were dirt on his shoe. Chloe gave a bright little laugh. “Don't be cruel, Julian. She probably wants witnesses. Single mothers love a public scene when they need sympathy or a payout.” I was too tired of them to be angry. They had spent years telling each other the same story: Julian was the man I could never get over, and I was still begging from the edge of his life. Julian kept watching for the reaction he remembered. He expected me to argue, demand an explanation, or stare at Chloe's wedding ring. When none of that happened, his fingers tightened around her waist. Chloe noticed. Her laugh sharpened, and she shifted closer to him as if I had challenged her claim merely by standing there. I crouched beside Leo. “Cover your ears for a minute, honey. Mommy needs to talk to the silly man.” Leo nodded. He pressed both hands over his ears and watched Julian with Arthur's serious grey eyes. When I stood, Julian's smile had begun to slip. “See a therapist,” I said. “Your narcissism has gone from embarrassing to clinical. Watching it this close is making me sick.” His mouth tightened. He remembered tears and arguments. He had no answer for boredom. Chloe's painted smile disappeared too. “How dare you? After everything Julian did for you, you bring your little bastard here to ruin our day?” Leo's hands were still over his ears, but he could read her face. He stepped against my skirt and held on with both fists. I moved until my body blocked her view of him. Before I could answer, she looked past me. A half-restored bronze sculpture stood on a nearby pedestal. Beside it sat an open jar used by the restoration team. A warning sign was clipped to the base in block capitals: **DANGER. HIGHLY CORROSIVE AGENT. DO NOT TOUCH.** Chloe read the sign. Then she looked at Leo.
