Chapter 19 October 18 I skip the first day of school after fall break. I ignore the “are you lost?” and “where are you going, man?” comments from the Allen twins as I walk past the bus stop and keep going. There’s no way I can go to school today, or ever again. JK died on my watch. I can’t let the same thing happen to Charlotte. I walk to the park over on Watson street and collapse onto a bench, too mentally exhausted to go farther. I used to take my sister to this park. It was her favorite because she loved the swings here. “Push me higher, Brian,” she would yell, pumping her legs as she climbed higher and higher before letting go and leaping to an awkward landing, tumbling and rolling to a stop.
