Chapter 20 October 26 I stare at my bedroom ceiling, tracing a hairline crack from the light fixture to the wall. I don’t remember that crack being there before, and I wonder if I might have created it when I slammed the sledgehammer against the attic wall. It’s another cruel reminder of the window’s control over me. I check my phone, not expecting a text from Charlotte but hoping anyway. There’s a message from my dad, a reminder he’s picking me up early on Friday, but nothing else. The breakup with Charlotte has sucked all the energy out of me. I want to curl up in a ball and die. Instead, I trace the crack in the ceiling over and over until I fall into a fitful sleep. When I wake, I’m in front of the window. Am I awake or is this a dream?
