I was shocked. The shock seemed to be an understatement. What was Father doing here at that this of the evening?
Father rarely came to my room.
Instead, he would order the maids to call me.
He only came to my room whenever there was a pressing matter that needed to be discussed or perhaps, I had offended him.
“Open the door right now or I will order it to be pulled down!” He yelled threatening me again.
My heart began to race as I wondered about his intentions. I exhaled and hurriedly packed my mini luggage off my bed, hiding it in a corner of the room.
“Just a minute, Father. I am dressing up. “ I lied as I hurriedly loosened the grip of the band on my hair.
I brushed it with my hands and allowed it to lie on my face. I walked to the door, faking a smile.
Trying to hide my nervousness and fear so Father would not suspect my actions.
“What brings you here, Father?” I questioned, trying not to act or sound suspicious.
Like a detective, Father scanned the room as he walked in.
My heart raced faster. He looked around again and then settled for my study chair.
He shook his head as he looked at the paper on my table. It was the rules and regulations of our kingdom.
Well, I had studied it when I believed I was going to be the next Queen but since Father said otherwise, I had no choice but to let go.
“I had studied it when I thought I was going to be the Queen” I confessed quickly.
Beads of perspiration had begun to fall from my face.
I could not imagine the punishment that would be meted out to me if Father realized I was planning to elope but my happiness mattered so much.
I would rather die than spend the rest of my life with someone I had no feelings for. Someone I am not in love with.
Father nodded and then headed to my wardrobe. What was going on?
“Father, is something wrong, or are you searching for something?” I questioned. I was a bit relieved I had not kept what I had packed there.
Perhaps, it would have bred suspicion.
“Shouldn’t you be getting prepared for tonight’s meeting?” He questioned, crossing his arms behind him and staring at me.
“Yes, I am” I faked a smile. Anyone could tell it was not genuine but I had to do it anyway.
As long as Father was in the room with me, I wasn’t going to act suspicious.
Father looked at me and sighed. Just then, his gaze landed on my bed.
I looked at it and then, I saw it. Oh no! It was the necklace my mother had given me. Was he going to find out? Was I in trouble now?
He walked closer to the necklace, picking it up. He started at the necklace and then back at me.
Again, he rinsed and repeated. He could tell I was not happy. “I love you, Gabrielle. I love you so much” Father sighed and returned to the chair in which he had initially sat.
He held the necklace in his hand and continued to stare at it. He placed a kiss on the necklace.
“I know you are confused. I know you do not know what is going on anymore.
I know you are sad but I want the best for you” He started. To hell with the best.
I only wanted happiness, not some stupid best. A best that would end my life. I remained quiet as I bowed.
“Your mother… your mother died, in my arms. Do you know the last words she said to me? She said ‘Gabrielle.
Take care of her. Protect her. Do what is right for her regardless of anyone’s opinion.’.
Your mother loved you so much and never wanted anything to happen to you.
I love you as well and do not want anything to happen to you hence my decision.
Please bear your fate. I believe you will fall in love with whoever you are going to end up with if you spend time together”
I wanted to scoff but it would be disrespectful. To hell with anyone's wish and decision.
Of course, I was strong enough to protect myself. Mother was not. From her story that Father told me, Mother had always been a gentle princess right from childhood.
She was very fragile and avoided swords, arrows, and other fighting weapons.
I had trained all my life to be the Queen. I would be able to protect myself so what was anyone saying?
I was tired of hearing the story over and over and over again. I just couldn’t wait for nighttime. I had to leave as soon as I can.
“I will leave you to prepare. The meeting is in a couple of hours.
Our guests would begin to arrive in a few hours from now. I want you to be prepared and well-groomed when they arrive.
Their decision to marry you starts from your first look” He sighed and stood up.
If that were the criteria, then I would not mind dressing like a maid. Perhaps they would see me and change their mind.
They could decide not to marry me but Father was going to be upset.
I intended to make everyone happy and satisfy everyone so no one would suspect me when I want to leave.
“The maids would bring in hangers of dresses for you. Please, do ensure you look your best” He smiled at me.
I smiled back and bowed as he walked out of my room.
