I dashed to Father’s room. I could not dare to go on so I stood by the door, eavesdropping.
“I gave your wife the chance to be with you. I gave Anna the chance to be with you even when I knew I wanted a strong man for her.
My daughter would still have been alive today if I had chosen a strong man who could protect her rather than a weakling like you but I don’t regret it.
Do you know why? My daughter's happiness mattered to me. All I wanted to see was her happiness.
She was happy with you. If I had given her to a strong prince whom she did not love, she could have ended her life.
Her life would have ended sorrowfully.
Why don’t you give Gabrielle a chance?” I heard Grandmother say. I wished Father could hearken to her but if there was a distinguishing character about Father, it was his stubborn heartedness.
“That is the mistake you made. I am not going to make the same mistake as my daughter. Gabrielle is the only memory I have of Anna.
I loved Anna so much even though I could not protect her. I would rather watch Gabrielle be unhappy than watching her die.
Besides, if she stays with him for a while, she will fall in love with him”
“Love is not so easy. Give Gabrielle a chance” She persuaded.
“What chance? Gabrielle does not have any man in mind.
She does not have anyone she wants to spend her life with.
What then are you saying? I know Gabrielle so well. If given the chance to do as you have said, she would take forever to bring home a man.
I am running out of time. I am running out of patience. My foes are waiting for me so they can take a step. I can’t watch my daughter get hurt."
“I have someone who is strong and will love her” Grandmother exhaled. Wait, what?
Someone? Who was this someone?
“Who is he?” Father questioned, with concern.
“He is Prince Elliot, son of King Harry. He told me how much he loves her. King Harry had wanted Anna's hand in marriage before we allowed you to take her.
Since he could not marry her, he wants his son to marry her daughter. More like an alliance sort of”
My heart shattered. I was quite disappointed. I knew she had something up her sleeves.
It would take a gazillion angels to minister to her before she could repent. Was that all I meant to them? Just a tool? An object to ally?
“An alliance?” Father scoffed.
“Yes, an alliance. You know King Harry is very strong. So is his son. He would be able to take good care of Gabrielle as well as protect her.
In addition, he will ally with your kingdom and somehow with mine. We would be feared by many.
A lot of kingdoms will like and support us in everything we do. “ She explained further.
I shook my head. That was the least I had expected.
Father was quiet for a while. It seemed like he was considering it.
“If you are so sure of his confidence and strength, tell him to send his son to join the competition. He has till the day after the next to join” Father replied.
“Darrell…”
“You are a Queen and you have the full authority to make a decree in your kingdom.
Anyone and everyone must obey but this is my kingdom and my decision is final. Excuse me”
I knew Father was approaching the door. He was going to leave in anger.
I tried to run away so that Father would not know I was eavesdropping but my garment refused to let me go. It got hooked to something.
I tried to hurriedly remove it but it was too late.
Father opened the door.
Anger was boldly written all over his face. He paused and looked me straight in the eyes.
He opened his mouth to say something but then, refused to say anything. He walked away in anger.
With a sober and sorry expression, grandmother walked out. She looked at me and shook her head.
“I am sorry but…” She exhaled. “I could not help you”
Help? Hell no, I didn’t need her help. Her help could have caused more harm than good. I wasn’t going to let it happen.
I nodded my head as she walked past me. Where was she heading to? Just then she paused and looked back at me.
“Since my mission here cannot be accomplished, I bet I will take my leave now. I am returning to my kingdom”
She turned back immediately and began to leave.
My mind was made up. I was going to leave the palace that night and never return.
However, I knew I had to act normally so as not to breed suspicion. I faked a smile and returned to the kitchen.
While the food was being made, all that stuck in my mind was a way of escape. I had to escape as soon as I can.
As soon as the food was done, I headed to my room, under the pretense of wanting to get prepared for the ceremony.
I hurriedly grabbed a bag and placed a few of my things in it. I took my necklace, a gift from my mother before her death.
She had told me the necklace simply signified her presence.
When I was in trouble, when I am in confusion or when something goes wrong, I should not hesitate to wear it.
She would be there with me.
A sad smile eluded my lips. I wish mother was alive.
Perhaps, if she was, all that was happening would have been avoided.
Mother was the one who seemed to be able to talk to Father. When every other person talks to him including his mother, he would refuse to hearken to them but if it was my mother, he would respond.
I opened my wardrobe and began to select some dresses. I had to take something worth it as well.
Just then, I heard a knock on the door, more like a bang.
My heart skipped a bit as I wondered who could be there.
Who dared bang my door in that manner?
“Who is that?” I questioned, furrowing my brows.
“It’s me, your Father. Open the door right now or I would order it to be pulled down” He threatened.
Oh no!
