Alexa's pov The sun was already high in the sky before I woke up; its rays penetrated through the open windows, covering my face. I stretched and yawed. My hand felt something on the bed; it was a piece of paper. I grabbed it and read through it. The events of yesterday came flooding to my mind as I recalled how I got married to a total stranger, and this was the evidence in my hand. I looked around. He was not there. I guess he left after our night together. Somehow, I felt bad that I didn't see him before he left. I looked around, and he took me to a hotel, one of the finest hotels in the city. He must be a bit rich if he can afford to bring me here. I yawned again; it was time to go home and face Diedra. I could not recall where I left my car, which meant I would have to go home in a cab. As I already imagined, Diedra and her mother were having breakfast at the dining table when I returned. They didn't bother looking for me. I am sure it was Rebecca's idea to have Diedra sleep with Carlton. “You ran out of your engagement party last night. Do you know what that means?”. Rebecca asked immediately; she saw me walk in. I rolled my eyes; of course, that was the kind of question she would be asking after her daughter slept with my fiancé. I ignored her and made for my room. “It means you will lose the trust bequeathed to you by your father, and everything will come to me.” “My birthday is still tomorrow; you can't lay any claims to it yet." I pointed out. Diedra did not even bother sparing me a glance; she concentrated on her breakfast. I have always hated her. I hate her even more for what she did. “I'm sure it was your plan to destroy my engagement with Carlton, so I won't get married, right?. All because you want my inheritance.”. There was a hint of delight in Rebecca's eyes. “Well, it worked, didn't it? You don't have to get married anymore. My daughter did well.”. My chest tightened on hearing those words, and her admitting it showed she had no shame. I took out the paper and flashed it at her eyes. “I've got newsflash for you. I am already married, so you don't have anything that belongs to me.”. “What!”. Diedra screamed as she ran towards her mother. Rebecca snatched the paper from my hand. Together, the two of them read through it. “This is impossible, mom." Diedra said to Rebecca. I only smiled; their plan just backfired against them. “How do we know this is real?”. Rebecca asked, shaking the papers in front of me. I just shrugged my shoulders, “I owe you no explanation. I am married now, so whatever your plan was before. Now, you just lost.” The words were barely out of my mouth before Rebecca started tearing the paper to shreds. I screamed and crumbled on the floor, trying to gather the pieces of paper together. Rebecca sneered at me “This is rubbish, you want to deceive us with this piece of garbage,;now it's all gone. You can go ahead, and forge another marriage certificate if you like.”. I was on the ground, crying. The torn papers are in my hand. I wish I had magical powers to put it all back together. “Someone's here for Miss Carson." The butler announced from the doorway. It was probably Carlton. I didn't want to see him. I rose up in anger to shout at him. “How dare you show your face here again?” I stopped midway. “Hello to you too." The alluring voice was unmistakable. “Oliver!”. I took him in, dazzling green eyes. How was he at my house? He held my hand in his, his eyes never leaving mine. “I've come to take you home.” My eyes blink rapidly. I wasn't sure I heard right. “Who might you be?”. Rebecca asked him. Her voice was full of spite. He was overwhelmed; he was completely different from when I saw him last night. “Oliver Carrington, Alexa's husband.” His tone was perfect, as well as seductive. Diedra let out a chuckle. “You can't be serious, this." She said, pointing to Oliver. “This is the man you married? You don't even know him.” I folded my arms across my chest. “Better a stranger than you two, as for you." I turn to Rebecca. “Here is the proof that I actually got married, my husband in the flesh. Now, if you'll excuse me, I will go get my things and leave you both to do as you please with the house.” I kissed Oliver on the cheek lightly to prove my point and went upstairs. There wasn't much to take along. I picked up the box that contained valuable assets of my parents. It was enough for me. “Let's go”. I said to Oliver. We left both mother and child in the house, staring at our retreating backs. I didn't know Oliver or where he intended to take me, but I sure as hell won't spend another second in that house. We arrived at his house. I was surprised to see that he lived in such a big place; it was three times the size of my house. “You live here?”. I managed to ask after some minutes. "Yes, I do.” His voice was calm. “I want to introduce you to my family.” The car came to a stop in front of the house. I was awed by the magnificence. He must be a billionaire to live in such a place as this. I thought to myself. Two people were waiting for us, smiles on their faces. I assumed they were his parents. Oliver put his hand on my waist and led me to where they stood. “Alexa, this is my father Reynold and my stepmother Evelyn." He introduced. I smiled awkwardly; this was not how I imagined meeting my in-laws. “Oliver”. A familiar voice called him. Oliver turned. “This is my stepbrother." “Carlton!” I finished for him.
